Anyone running the TBird 1.1Ghz with the Asus A7V and 7.0 ? How's it going if so ?
/Dee
I just installed it last night with the Tbird 1 Ghz, and it works perfectly without problems. I am not using the Promise 100 ATA HD. SuSE picked up everything. same as before, only faster.. <g> <p> -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done.

Gary -- Did you disable the Promise hard disk controller on the A7V? It seems to have taken about 4 KBytes of RAM for itself, and some software (both Linux and Windoze) rebels. I would like to get the RAM back, even if I have to add a hard-disk controller card in a slot. But I don't know how to disable the on-board Promise, which already provides two channels. Dick

Hi Dick, As far as I know, there is no way to disable the ATA 100 Promise controller/connector. I did not use these for my 2 Hds, and did not load any of the Promise software for Windows. However, you may use, according to the manual, either connector, the 100 Promise or the Primary IDE connector and/or secondary connector, as they are backward compatible to either DMA/66 or 33 automatically. I was told that if I did not want to use it, just don't install the software for Promise. I put both my HDs on the regular IDE connector. I know of no other way of disabling it. I just tried to boot (for the first time since the new upgrade, as I have been working in SuSE all day) into W2K, and it will not do it. It locks me out with a GPF - initialization of the I/O system failed.. says to check the IDE port devices, etc. All is set up correctly. I even just reinstalled LILO using /sbin/lilo, and that would not do it. SuSE boots up fine on the slave HD, as always. Did I ever tell you how much I hate winders? ... with W2K, and this problem, I might just have to reinstall after I play around with the cables and maybe have to put them in the Promise connector. That's all that I can think of. -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done.

Go ahead , rub it in <grin>
Fastes unit here is an AMDK6 400 , rest are P166s and P90s so when ever I feel deprived I run to the p90 and run x on it , afterwards the amd 400 is much better , I used to compile the kernal on a 486/66 with 4 meg ram. Now that was fun. ^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^ ^^^^^^^
ROTFL now that is interesting! I still have a 133 that the kids use. I had a PII 400 until now. Had to upgrade as the ps/2 sockets were going, in fact, the mouse port was already gone. Keyboard port was right behind it. I had a dual boot with W2k and SuSE. W2K will not load, get a GPF as it is booting (error is for IDE controllers). Lilo is fine.... Now, I come to find out that W2K has a major problem on mobo upgrades, as it will NOT install new controller drivers. Only thing left to do is reinstall. They don't tell you this though. I will not put W2K in my box again. I am going to format the "former" W2K hda tonight and put in FreebSD, so I will have SuSE and it together. If I need the idiot software, I can use VMWare as it works great. Thanks to all who helped me with my lilo questions on a complete reinstall onto another HD, and how to keep my hard worked seasoned SuSE hdb in order. Tonight is the night ... I really am winders free! <p> -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done.

Win 98 is the end of the line , all now boxes are getting linux on them , as once they are setup they are real stable , not of that reboot , and plug and play driver shuffle that changes everthing on you when you least expect it. I have yet to have a linux box go down on me. I had problems with windows boxes going south on me , each and every time I was out of town. Once thyy had to do payroll by had for twenty five emplyeesy using the tax charts , not a fun task. Matter of fact , If I throw in vmware I can toss windows aside completely as I need it for the payroll , every thing else I can move elswhere or re write our custom invioce tracking program which I can do in python if I can just finsh tthe darn book. I could probibly find an accounts payable module dome where that will work with linux. Only thing holding me back is the hardware. Moneydaance works nicely even on the p166 on linux. vmware needs some hosrepower. <p>>Thanks to all who helped me with my lilo questions on a complete reinstall

Of course, it's some kind of Murphy's law or something <g> Regarding Plug and Pray, I can't even get that in W2K. I have never had a nux box go down either.

Ya, VMware needs some push. I give it 128MB ram. works okay when I need it. Since I usually run just 1 or 2 apps in there, I suspend it rather then shutting Windows down, so it just loads to what I need right away. Good luck with your Python. Can you imagine when big companies ran payroll and invoicing all by hand, years ago.... Interesting about Moneydance. I have not used it, but will need to. Now, time to nuke hda W2k! <p> -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done.
