Hi, all. I have a Firewire powerbook ("Pismo") running version 6.4. I tried to connect it to a projection device (to display my screen for a presentation) and nothing would come up. At first I thought of having a printer problem yet soon discover that this particular file is not printable. If you want to configure the MTA yourself, Postfix is *much* easier to learn. Postfix is also smaller, reputed to be significantly faster, and is secure "by design", though as soon as someone says this, someone else will tell you "Sendmail hasn't had a hole in 2.5 years" or that qmail is more secure than Postfix, or that Sendmail is much more configurable. All I can say is that I know nothing about using MTA's and I configured Postfix very quickly. It works like a charm. Securityfocus.com and freebsd.org (among others) use it for their mailing lists. rpm database fix for removed xpm

This leaves a lot of dependencies broken. When ever I do a check dependencies via yast I get 40-50 packages with broken dependencies. Obviously I cannot reinstall the xpm rpm. Compiling 7.0 kernel: where are ALSA snd- sound modules?

I installed and compiled my standard kernel for SuSE 7.0 and sound stopped working. No wonder: my sound modules in misc/ are missing. I was using snd-emu10k1.o (Sound Blaster Live). I found the snd- modules in the orginal modules directory, put it in misc/ and depmod -a, to get depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/... depmod -e shows that these appear to be standard kernel functions: printk, kfree, etc. I can't find the source or references to the alsa sound modules anywhere in the kernel directories. I can only find the snd- modules in the original modules directory. The emu10k1 rpm package doesn't seem to have a module object or source in it. Strange! I'm also confused about the SuSE kernel source. There's the standard one, and linux-2.2.16-SuSE. What's the difference? Any pointers how to compile a custom kernel with the alsa snd- modules would be appreciated. Brett

I have never found an effective way to identify the package such a library comes from. rpmfind no longer lists SuSE packages at all, so that is not helpful. Any Suggestions? Steve
