[SLE] src.rpm's and rpm database

Im in the proces of installing openssh. I installed openssl from the suse cd's, and have obtained openssh-1.2.1pre25-1suse.src.rpm . I am not entirely sure what to do with src.rpm's. I know they contained the source, and i have run rpm -i openssh-1.2.1pre25-1suse.src.rpm. it installs a tar ball containing the source and a spec file. I have looked at the files in the tarball, and am sure I can install them using the instructions contained within it. But I'd like to have rpm build it using the spec file, because it automatically creates ssh startup scripts, and adds an entry into rc.config. Also, I have openssh-server-1.2.1pre25-1.i386.rpm and openssh-client-1.2.1pre25-1.i386.rpm. Am I to install these myself afterwards? If so, the above 2 rpm's install their files under /usr and not /usr/local. Is this OK? I wouldnt mind maintaing a seperate rpm database for my non suse rpm's (things i'm installing myself like openssh). I'd like to install these all under /usr/local. I am not entirely sure how to go about this though. There is a --root and a --dbpath option that I am aware of, but do I also need to use --initdb? How will having 2 seperate databases alter the way rpm works? eg will rpm -q -a just display the rpm's installed in the 'suse' db, and say rpm --dbpath /usr/local/... -q -a display just the rpm's installed in 'my' db? [SLE] extract tar file permission problem

I met a strange situation, anybody can help me ? I install a SuSE 6.3 version at my new PC recently, everything seems OK, but when I download a package file from internet or my friends send me a tar file, for example, such like 'php-3.0.13.tar.gz' , After I extract that file by "tar xvfz php-3.0.13.tar.gz" command, and that will create a directory named 'php-3.0.13' and the directory owner will become "drwxrwxr-x 507 507 4096 Jan 10 10:50 php-3.0.13", and below this directory, all files owner become same "507 507 ". Before this 6.3 version, I never met this , So I try that same package at SuSE 6.1 and 6.0, that looks fine, all files and directory owner is my name. So, anybody met this problem ? Any anybody can help me ? [SLE] Would some try sh -x probemodem?

Hello, I ran sh -x probemodem , and I'm told that there does not appear to be a fuser command on my machine. Well I do have the command fuser and it works fine. Would anyone out there like to run the command sh -x probemodem and telling me if you receive the same message? You cannot be connected to the net while doing this. Don't worry, it gives a detailed probe of your modems capabilities. Once you get past the fuser part, just do a Ctrl-C to stop. I'm just curious if this happens to anybody using SuSE, or what the deal is. I inserted the fuser part of my output below. Hi All Im trying to get my samba working on the network here. I can ping and ftp all the machines. I have removed dummy and have samba running. [SLE] xfce-3.2.3 problems (soryy if it's OOT)

Hi guys, I tried to install xfce-3.2.3 on my SuSE 6.1 box. After I ran gunzip & untar and xfce_setup I tried to lounch xfce as usual but it complains that it cannot open libjpeg.so.62. On my CD-s I find only libjpeg.so.6 and there is in '/usr/lib/' on my Linux box. Where can I find the right one?? [SLE] Looking for an HTML formater

I recently downloaded the Bluefish html editior and like it a lot. I've also been testing Homesite on the Windows side. One thing Homesite has that I like is an html formater that cleans up and indents existing html code. It would be an interesting exercise to write a formatter myself, but why reinvent the wheel? [SLE] STILL problem with httpd & seperate drive!!

Im having a heck of a time trying to get my spare drive to serve web files I changed the mount point to /usr/local/httpd/htdocs/web/ and cannot access files this config file seems WIDE open PLEASE someone find where Im amiss... This is killing me I spent 2 nites trying to get this to work here is my error Forbidden You don't have permission to access /web/w3/www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS1.none on this server. Apache/1.3.9 Server at 192.68.1.9 Port 80 ################################################ here is what someone posted me to read what the heck is rubrik directory!!! does this stuff get made up!!! eeehhhhhhhhhhhkkkkkkkk Symptom: You receive the error "Forbidden" when trying to access web-pages on an Apache Server, including the full-text search function of the SuSE help system. Cause: For safety purposes the Apache Server configuration has been changed. Symbolic Links to any directory oustside of the Server directory (/usr/local/httpd/htdocs/) are no longer allowed. Probably a sillly question from a newbie. I receive email etc no problem except when it is uu encoded. I am using Kmail. Ay suggestions as to how I can receive boh or as to how I can access attachments when uu as opposed to mime? Thanks in advance.
