I had a 6.4 once and the bios reorganized from 13,453/64/16 (not exact!: cyls/heads/sectors) to 790/255/16. If you're using SCSI then it is a concern. If it is a concern then yes a 100MB root partition separate from the rest. If it is not a concern then it does not matter how you set up your partitions. If it detects a boot loader it will give you some crap message about not being about to use 98 if you are using a boot loader with other OS's. (Gotta love Micro$loth's predatory tactics!) Next put NT, and then Linux. Since NT writes to the first primary partition for some reason during the install you cannot have 98 setup as a fat32 partition. So that limits 98 to <= 2048K. I'd have 2 primary partitions for 98/NT and extended for linux, then you can setup linux partitions anyway you want. I believe that there will be a boot loader file in the root directory of your C drive (win98) that NT will be looking at for boot setup. you have to modify this. Configure lilo to only boot linux. If you use lilo or some other boot manager, when you boot NT, you will be booting to another boot manager, then loading NT. If your using Xwindows, you might want to try KPPP or EzPPP. WVdial does work very well though. Your wvdial.tar.gz file is uncompressed like this. tar vfxz wvdial.tar.gz (the file name of course will be whatever you have.) After that, change directories and simply type make. after it finishes type make install. That's about it. [SuSE Linux] /dev/st->/dev/tape ?

Ok, I've only been at this for six months so I don't know everything about Linux yet. That will take at least seven months ;-) I'm trying to figure this tape thing out. My tape unit is SCSI ID-5. I believe it is /dev/st or something like that. I am not finding a howto on the subject. I believe there should be a link to my tape something like ln -s /dev/st /dev/tape. Is this what I need to do? I don't see an /dev/tape with an ls. When I try mt -f /dev/st0 rewind I don't get an error telling me that it is an invalid device, so I assume it is there. If I do mt rewind, I get an error that says it can't find /dev/tape. I guess I need a pointer on how to get started with SCSI tape devices. Can anyone give me a place to start? I have downloaded and compiled amanda. And I'm working on KDAT. I have a lot of problems compiling KDE tools. I assume these will go away when I get the new glib5 with 5.3. Sure hope my SBP16 works on my ASUS P2B 400M Hz. If not I guess I'll be without sound until we figure out the bug. [SuSE Linux] SuSE 5.3 yea!

Last night I received and upgraded my suse 5.2 to suse 5.3. I wanted to share my experience. First of all, it went smooth, There were only a few packages it wouldn't upgrade, because I had upgraded them myself with out using yast. I did get a couple of errors on reboot, but nothing vital. once again things that i had setup that may need a few adjustments. I use OSS for my sound and I haven't checked to see if it got broken. I use linux as a server for my home lan so sound is something I rarely use or care about. X is working I am connected to the internet and my lan. I haven't check printing yet anyway I think this was the easiest upgrade I have ever done. That kind of amount is fine for me - the most I've ever seen used is 28K - note, kilobytes, not megabytes!!!!Also, Linux, NT, and Win98 cannot share swap space - at least as far as I am aware. EITHER Create a 300Mb FAT16 partition for booting everything off and putting Win98 on it, and creating an extended partition of 1.2Gb as FAT32 for Win98's exclusive use OR Create a 1.5Gb FAT16 partition for booting everything off and installing / running Win98. 2. Install WinNT by running winnt with appropriate switches from single-application mode DOS (in other words, restart the PC in MSDOS mode), and create the 3Gb NTFS (presumably) partition during setup. You'll be using the C: drive for temp files, so, assuming that your CDROM drive is D:, the command would be winnt /s:d:\i386 /t:c /x /b 3. Install SuSE, creating you nearly 2Gb Ext2FS partition and swap partition during setup, and installing all the stuff you want. I've installed a couple of Linux distributions, and they don't install LILO on a disk that isn't using translation - your BIOS should do this for you, though......On the assumption that your BIOS does translation, then install SuSE and put LILO on / (your root partition). Then, in Linux, you would mount the FAT16 partition (say, as /mnt/cdrive), and, assuming that Linux is installed on /dev/hda3, type in the following command: dd if=/dev/hda3 bs=512 count=1 of=/mnt/cdrive/bootsect.lin That copies the Linux boot sector into a file in the root of drive C:, which you can then add to the boot.ini file for NT as c:\bootsect.lin="S.u.S.E. Are you adding a drive or replacing one? The thing to watch out for with Partition Magic is that it numbers partitions in their physical order, which is the DOS fdisk method. Linux fdisk numbers them in order of creation. So use PQM to create partitions and use Linux's fdisk to set the partition type to 82 or 83, depending on whether it's a swap or ext2. [SuSE Linux] CONNECT wvdial to browser

I have at last been able to make wvdial work. My problem is that when I open the browser, lynx, it cannot fetch any web page. It seems not to be tied at all to the open connection to my ISP. Any tips? J C

Jean Claude, What is you modem device set to in wvdial.conf? It should be set to one of the following: Dos Linux com1 /dev/cua0 or /dev/ttyS0 com2 /dev/cua1 or /dev/ttyS1 com2 /dev/cua2 or /dev/ttyS2 com4 /dev/cua3 or /dev/ttyS3 or if the modem device is set up the simply try /dev/modem The wvdial.conf file should be in /etc and is created the first time you run wvdial. I trust that you have made a directory /win95.
