I seem to remember that Midnight Commander (mc) should be able to do ftp. (perhaps it needs some kind of patch for it) If you prefer something more GUIish two kfm (KDE file manager) windows should do the trick. It allows simple DnD between your home dir in one window and the ftp dir in another. [SuSE Linux] Help w/ Linux Boot Menu under Win95

Well, my one major complaint against SuSE is the lack of good documentation. I know that RedHat kicks the crap out of SuSE with regard to this, and that SuSE better get its butt in gear if it wants to compete (in the US) with distributions supported by the likes of Netscape and Intel. I have followed exactly the instructions for a boot menu under windoze95 on p. 39 of the SuSE 5.3 manual. It doesn't work!!! The only way that I can get anything to work is to just call "loadlin hda6" from my autoexec.bat, and to forget about anything regarding linux in my config.sys. Can someone who has successfully gotten a boot menu running under win95 PLEASE send me a copy of their autoexec.bat, config.sys, and the files in the loadlin directory of the root dos/win drive. ( I have to keep microslop windows around for the girlfriend) I am giving SuSE every chance, but when something like this happens it is hard. And, last question, how is it that one really sets up this loadlin stuff in the first place? You can run "setup" on the CD, but this of course copies the image of a generic kernel to the newly created loadlin directory, rather than the kernel that one has customized. [SuSE Linux] Converting BackOffice Server to Linux?

Here's the shit in a nutshell. Client has NT 4.0 SP3 running with Back Office 4.0, and the server runs like crap. The server is mainly used for/as a print server and sharing files for your typical Win apps, such as Peach Tree, Office 97, global share directories, (for user data) etc. All of the client systems are running Win95, plus 1 NT workstation. I realize Samba is necessary, but any other clues? The server should just do it's job and the clients could care less as long as everything hum's along. The printer is a HP 4 plus if that matters..., server is a P200 with 128MB ram. [SuSE Linux] How do I get TWO ethernet cards working on the same computer?

I'm trying to set up a SuSE 5.3 linux box with two ethernet cards - one a 3com pci card (runs on the 3c59 modules), and the other a 3com isa 3c509B (supposedly runs on the 3c509 module). The pci card works fine on eth0 with the 3c590 module, and that card connects my compter to the net. I want to connect the 3c509 card to another the card on another computer and then use masquerading to give the second computer access to the internet. Unfortunately, I can't get the 3c509 module to recognize the isa card on eth1. When I do a modprobe 3c509, or an insmod 3c509, all I get is this message: 3c509.o: init_module: Device or resource busy I've tried setting irq=10. That doesn't help. What else should I be trying? How do I find out what "device or resource" might be "busy?" I have disabled PnP on the card (via a dos program provided by 3com), and I know that the card works fine in the isa slot of another computer. So the card itself is unlikely to be the problem? So what else do I need to do? Is there some obscure incompatibility between my two cards? Are they fighting for the same base address, or what? Thanks. [SuSE Linux] DNS Lookup problems

Hi, I have a problem looking up named servers, ie: www.netscape.com I'm using Kppp as the dialer and YaST to set up basic networking. Numerical IP's work great, but when it comes to named servers, no go.. I am selecting the default gateway in Kppp setup and have entered the ISP's correct DNS entries. Can anyone suggest what I am missing? [SuSE Linux] YaST with problems...

Hi, Yesterday I was deleteing few users from the YaSt 'user administrator' interface, these where users which I didn't need anymore on my system and some of them came as default during the installation. While removing some of the users I got a warning asking if I wanted to delete the directories as well, which I did, everything went fine until when I deleted the game user... at this point YaST crashed and now I cannot use it anymore...when I try to run it an error comes up saying: '/bin/sh: /tmp/s515_0_S: No such file or directory program aborted! ERROR: Open Output File, DETAIL: 0 FILE: SystemCmd.cc LINE: 487' ... any idea how to solve the problem? My other question is: I manage to connect to my ISP via modem but when using Netscape the pages are loaded very slowly... How can I check if my modem is running at full speed ? [SuSE Linux] Sysadmin Question

I am wondering what kind of precautions can be taken against runaway system processes... specifically, as in user's cgi scripts. It doesn't seem fair to just kill the process, causing potential damage to a database or something. On the other hand, the system load cannot run away. What is a good recommended system load, or is there one? (is it machine specific?) Is there a way to assign lower priority to certain processes, causing *them* to run slower rather than the whole machine? I'm pleased with my SUSE Linux 5.3 Installation. I was using a very famous Linux distribution with Linux kernel 2.0.27. Since I wanted FAT32 support and video support for SiS5597/5598, I switched to SUSE. Wow, am I pleased ! Everything seems to work out of the box, including sound, X and the K desktop. I have managed to install it onto a Toshiba Libretto 50CT 75Mhz 16mb It's brought life back to an almost depreciated machine(under win95)! I was wondering if anyone has had any encounters with Linux and mobile phones... i.e. I would like to connect me Libretto to my Nokia phone which has infra-red comms capabilities... I have had this working under win95 but cannot find any drivers/apps which allow me to do such a thing... any help/tips/Url's would be most appreciated... The software that allows me to use the comms also has a serial cable which connects to the phone. I have tried under kppp and minicom.... but to no prevail. also are there any Power management apps ...at present I'm having to boot each time I take it out of standby... [SuSE Linux] Wvdial & seg fault

Hi All Im setting up a new machine and trying wvdial. When I run it it detects the modem and provides the init string but ends up with a segmentation fault (and dosent create the conf file) I create the wvdial.conf by hand using the init string provided by the wvdialconf but when I run wvdial it says "bad init string" also... if I querry the modem in kpp it says the modem is busy minicom dosnt dial, so the modems not getting dected? [SuSE Linux] PPPD unkown command

Hi, I have made a connect script to connect trough minicom to my ISP. When i run the script it say " pppd unknown command". But pppd is installed. I have reinstalled pppd twice, but still it's not recognized by the system. Has anybody an idea why it's not working? Thanks for any help suggestions. [SuSE Linux] KDM graphic login problem. Suse 5.2

Hi all, I am a relatively new user of linux. I got Suse5.2 a few months back and got my system set up and running well. I haven't had time to use it for the last few months though, so have forgotten a lot of what I learned. I am having problems with the graphic login. I have had it running previously, but anaged to screw it up somehow a few months back and don't know how to fix it. (Well I could fix it with a re-install but I don't want to do that). When I boot up linux, it goes through all the usual stuff until it tries to go into the graphical login (I'm using kdm). It tries to start up the graphic login then flashes back to the usual text login prompt. Then it again tries to go to the graphic login and then flashes back to the text login prompt again. It just goes on continuing to do this until I re-boot. Then when it starts up again the same thing happens. I can fix it by turning off the graphical login and just using the text one, and starting x manually but this is a pain in the ***. I vaguely remember that this may have something to do with shadow passwords but I'm not entirely sure. Nor can I remember where to look to change the shadow passwords if this is the case. Can anyone help me? Hi all, I have this old printer IBM Proprinter III (i don't know the english word for a printer which is not inkjet nor laserjet nor bubblejet...) and I would like to use it to print the source of my programs. How can I configure the printer device in order to use it? YaST seems to manage only "more evolute" printers. Any help would be very appreciated. Microsoft's Windows NT finished dead last overall in a comparison with five different versions of the Unix operating system, concluded a market research firm that assessed the latest versions of these operating systems. IBM's AIX version of Unix topped the rankings, followed by Compaq's Digital Unix, Sun Microsystems' Solaris, and Silicon Graphics' Irix. Each of these four operating systems received a "good" rating from D.H. Brown Associates. Hewlett-Packard's HP-UX earned an "OK" rating. But "Even the Enterprise Edition of Windows NT Server 4.0 trails Unix in every area except for PC client support," D.H. Brown said in a statement. The company ranks the major Unix variants and NT each year using a scorecard that judges six factors. Windows NT ranked last in every area except one. "NT still falls short of Unix for advanced Internet protocols and extensions. NT also lags in features for scalability, reliability, availability, serviceability, and system management," the study said. Windows NT earned second place in support for PC clients, losing out to Compaq's Digital Unix. The latter also took top marks in its support for its support of services across a large corporation. IBM's AIX ranked first for system management and support for intranets and the Internet. Big Blue has taken "the most active role of the major operating system vendors" in providing software for electronic commerce, D.H. Brown said. However, AIX tied for fourth place in its score for reliability, availability, and serviceability. Solaris 7's full 64-bit capabilities launched it from last place among Unix systems last year to third place this year, according to D.H. Brown. Solaris won out in scalability, reliability, availability, and serviceability, but was second-to-last in its support for PC clients. Irix too improved overall, with a strong rating for reliability, availability, and serviceability, the study said. HP-UX, however, slipped backwards, in part because of HP's failure to ship promised Java-based system management tools, which are key for managing a computer remotely. D.H. Brown noted that the study doesn't reflect market share or customer satisfaction. "The industry has frequently shown that the best technology does not always win in the marketplace," the study admitted. Companies still can highlight their system's advantages, D.H. Brown said. [SuSE Linux] SuSE Firewall and Masq

People, I'm getting a little impatient in getting the delivered implementation of Yast/diald/ipmasq/firewall to work. I had a homebrew ip masq working fine. Then I enabled Yast's diald, but it did not work right. Then I read that I should get SuSE Firewall and Ip masq working together. One thing; when I installed the firewall and ipmasq out of 'n', it did not set up the ipmasq and fw rc.config variables. Is this you all's experience? Could someone who has these things working please email their rc.config to me? Greatly appreciated. Folks, I have a curious problem with cutting&pasting 8-bit characters between xterms, i.e. characters with the 8th bit set (such as Ÿ which has code 0xBE = 190 decimal). It arises when pasting into a window in which a remote machine is logged on, in which case the 8th bit is stripped (i.e. the above gets pasted in as ">" with code 0x3E = 62). Pasting into a window in which the local machine is logged on is OK -- the 8th bit is not stripped. In detail: On machine A: xterm windows: AA1 (machine A logged in) AA2 (machine A logged in) AB1 (machine B logged in) AB2 (machine B logged in) pasting AA1->AA2 : OK (8th bit not stripped) pasting AB1->AA2 : OK (8th bit not stripped) pasting AA1->AB1 : FU (8th bit stripped) pasting AB1->AB2 : FU (8th bit stripped) And it is exactly symmetrical by machine: going to machine B, On machine B: xterm windows: BB1 (machine B logged in) BB2 (machine B logged in) BA1 (machine A logged in) BA2 (machine A logged in) pasting BB1->BB2 : OK (8th bit not stripped) pasting BA1->BB2 : OK (8th bit not stripped) pasting BB1->BA1 : FU (8th bit stripped) pasting BA1->BA2 : FU (8th bit stripped) Can anyone (a) explain why this happens? If your kernel and everything is setup right.. Make a directory.. say something like /iomega Then do: mount -t msdos /dev/sda4 /iomega That should mount it.. I have no idea why dos formatted Zips are sda4.. But ext2 formatted ones are sda1... Hi I thing you hav't understood the boot process of linux. 1. step Wether if you use LILO or LOADLIN both are only resposible for load & start the linux kernel. This runs most the time. If you can read uncompressing kernel on screen, the kernel has been found and starts running.!!! But a linux kernel include NOT only some basic HW drivers but allmost every driver and like W95 this drivers perform an autoprobing. This part often failed (also like W95). To get started you can inform your kernel with kernel parameters. This is a liddle bit (or much) sophisticated but is supported by both loaders. Often it is more simple to get rid of critical HW (e.g. NE2000 cards often confuse SCSI driver) and recompile the kernel w/o the critical driver. If the kernel can be load&start, there is no need to change the partition table 'active' entry, because the load stubb is running. Only dos & m$win need to be started from a active partition. Linux, OS/2 and much others can start from everywhere. 2. step When all your hardware is found and initialised, the kernel try to mount a root file system (any disk/partition or RAMDISK with e.g. umsdos, ext2-fs etc.) This is indicated by seeing a list of all found disks and partitions on screen followed by search for root / found messages.

Hello all, I am a consultant specializing in PERL engineering in the UNIX admin arena, but #1 on my wish list is to be my own boss ( just like everybody else ). So I formed a sub-S corporation* and I am going to devote about 300f my efforts to fielding a Linux thin client. Enter the pc-on-a-chip dev box that I should be receiving in about a week. I will then start assembling the apropriate suse install for my little product. My real target will be to support emerging market nations especially in remote applications with the aim of bringing high content products to first world nations and supplying them with software aimed at creating more communications and independant management. I also have involvment with Caldera and hope to use their multi-tier organization on the server side, with a more traditional focus on business software. While I 100upport GPL and the Artistic License, many concerns using the open source OS's have been more than generous to our clique of ~10,000,000. As a VAR, I am going to get some really good hardware offers. I would like to pass along the great deals I get to any geeks hoping to advance the lowly "set top box."
