[SuSE Linux] Boot up problem

Hi, After rebuilding the kernel I updated lilo.conf as follows: boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b prompt timeout=100 image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux initrd=/boot/initrd root=/dev/hda1 read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz.old label=old root=/dev/hda1 read-only Unfortunately after saving the file I've forgot to run lilo as docs suggest with the result that now my machine won't boot up. This 's the error during boot : #Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01 I 've then created a rescue floppy and a boot floppy from the installation CD but both of them don't work? When I start the machine the floppy drive is read but few seconds later LILO: comes up and I am left only with the boot linux option. Hi I woukd guess most of that ram is occupied as "buffer", start osview and have a look. KDE uses a lot of ram, I have 32 Mb and its a minimum, i would think (judging from the sound on mu drive.). [SuSE Linux] Masquerade

Hi all, I'am running SuSe 5.3 on one of my PC's. Now i try to connect my kids Win95 PC to connect internet trought the Linux PC, trough masquerade. The settings on the Win95 PC are DNS= my IPS with DNS server seach order (195.121.1.34) Host = name of IPS. IP_Address of the IP numer of the Win 95 PC = 192.168.1.5 Than Gateway the IP number of my Linux PC = 192.169.1.1 When I start netscape on the Win95 PC, the Linux PC dail out, but says after 2 or 3 seconds REMOTE HANGUP. In my /etc/rc.config there is under masquerade: MSQ_START="yes" (offcourse) MSQ_NETWORKS="" ( which ip I have to fill in here, the IP number of the Win95 PC or the IP number of the Linux PC ?) MSQ_DEV="eth0" ( is this correct as I connect to my ISP trough ISDN /dev/ttyI0 ) Can somebody tell me what I have to fill in MSQ_NETWORKS= and MSQ_DEV= and why REMOTE HANGUP, when I try to connect my IPS from the Win95 machine? I allready read the Handbook of SuSe about firewall and Masquerade several times but it's not clear to my. I also read the Howto's Masquerade and Firewall, but there is not line mentioned about the /etc/rc.config configuration? Thanks for ny help suggestions. Could anyone from SuSe advise me (and probably hundreds of other users in the UK) about upgrading versus buying the complete version of SuSe 6.0 at the end of Jan 1999? I have just bought a brand new machine with nothing on it but with, naturally enough, things like a Matrox Productiva G100 card and a UDMA hard drive that are not particularly well supported by older versions of the kernal. I have the cover CD of PC Plus which featured a 'cut down' version of 5.3. Should I :- a) install 5.3 from this single cut down CD and then buy an upgrade version of SuSe 6.0? b) buy and install a complete (ie 5 CD) version of 5.3 and then upgrade as in (a)? c) wait until 6.0 becomes available and buy the full (ie non-upgrade) version at the end of Jan? [SuSE Linux] Need Help With Printer Problem

I've been trying for 3 weeks to get an HP Ljet4L back to functioning with SuSE 5.3. It's worked before under both v5.2 and 5.3. But I haven't been able to get any response from the printer since a complete reinstall of 5.3. Any ideas where I go from here??? When I do a cat /var/log/boot.msg >/dev/lp1, or an lpr /var/... >/dev/lp1 all that happens is the two lights which would normally indicate printing, go on. Absolutely nothing happens! While in this "suspended" state of no-activity, a check of the print queue for lpr, ascii, and raw all show to be empty. Nothing there to print. Need your help please..... any ideas or suggestions most welcome. [SuSE Linux] Xfree86-3.3.3

I dl'd all the files from suse's ftp site (under the suse_update/XFree86-3.3.3-SuSE directory). The only files i didn't dl were the server files, except for the svga server. My question is, what do i have to do to install this thing? Should i remove the 3.3.2 X install that came with suse5.3, as well as KDE and start from scratch? Or will the routing tables still be remain a critical point? I do indeed only want to allow HTTP and FTP - (maybe not even FTP). I have installed Squid, but can't seem to find any man pages or other information on its configuration and use. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? If I ran a nameserver on the gateway Linux box - rather than use the one on the coprorate LAN - would that also simplify matters? As far as the corporate LAN is concerned, apart from the Internet connection, most of our PC's only use the network for printing to network printers.
