Hello everybody.
Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ?
I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp
and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS
formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there).
At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed
boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd
I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep
and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html
(ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd).
At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed
boot floppy:,\zImage
In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical:
The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so).
The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that.
The system freezes (or reboots after a long time).
(None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.)
So obviously, none of these approaches works for me.
What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied
as files on an MS-DOS disk?
Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p.
BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251.
Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions.

I have a Dec 1999 g3 400 iMAc.
Since I am about to install OSX 10.1 and OS 9.2, Apple indicates updating
Firmware to 4.1.9 Anyone know if this will thwart my plans to install SuSe
Linux 7.1 ?
I read the following on the SuSE site, but it is a little vague:
<<Apple Cronology
* January 2001
* These machines have a newer firmware, the bootloader is unable to open
the textmode
* iMacs can be used with 7.1
* Cube, Titanium Powerbook G4 can be used with 7.1
* G4 can be used with 7.1, the Radeon and nVidia cards are unsupported,
remove the SCSI card, onboard ethernet may not work
* iBook2 works (unconfirmed), enter "boot cd:,\\yaboot" on the firmware
prompt.
* August 2000
* These machines have a newer firmware, the bootloader is unable to open
the textmode
* G4, Cube, iMac, iBook, Powerbook can be used with 7.0, kernel 2.2.18
recommended
* the available Radeoncards are unsupported
>>
It seems to imply that the firmware on the newer macs is not compatible.
Well if I update my older Mac with the latest Firmware update 4.1.9, it
sounds like I may shoot my Linux installation plans in the foot! Anyone
tried this?
Thanks

Hi,
After upgrading my kernel to 2.4.2 and running LiLo again I now find
I get a macintosh warning every time I boot into mac. The warning
says "disk unreadable, do you want to initialize it?", the disk in
question is the macintosh standard partition used for booting linux.
When I run disk first aid and try to repair it the program says the
disk is unrepairable .. here is the output from disk first aid :-
Checking disk "linux_boot".
Checking "Mac OS Standard" volume structures.
Checking for locked volume name.
Checking extent BTree.
Checking extent file.
Checking catalog BTree.

Checking catalog file.

Problem: Reserved fields in the catalog record have incorrect data, 103, 8
Problem: MountCheck found serious errors.

Cannot continue. An internal error has occurred.
If I initialize the partition will that also erase the data on any
other partitions on the disk? If so is there something else I can do
to restore the boot partition?
many thanks.

Hi,
It seems quite odd, but I´m unable to get sound out of my Powermac
Running the new SuSE7.3 PPC with improved Sound support.... Well I tried
all methods I have been applying to such problems since SuSE 7.0 x86, no
avail. If I try 'modprobe dmasound' or 'modprobe dmasound_pmac' Linux
says it cant find the module 'dmasound', although I found it under
/lib/modules/2.4.12/kernel/sound/dmasound. Same with 'insmod awacs' etc.
Since SuSE claims the capabilities of yast 2 I tried a new installation
completely using YAST2. Yast 2 detects my souns system as snd0burgundy.
But when it comes to the point it should start th sounddriver there is a
sort *knack* and the whole System is frozen, no mousemovement no
console, no ssh... ..the File mdules.conf is totally scrambled, somtimes
rc.config as well. ALSAconf detects my soundchip as 'Awacs' makes some
entries in modules.conf but when it wants to start the sound driver ....
Same as Yast2 see above.
Has anyone got a running soundsyste on a PowerMac G3 B&W ?
Do you know what to do?
Thanks
Thomas
Hi,
I have upgraded my kernel from 2.2.16 to 2.4.2 but suspect I'm still
booting into the old kernel. I'm using a B&W G3 and booting with
BootX . Is there some step I should take to ensure I'm booting into
the correct kernel? Is there anyway I can tell which kernel is
currently in use?
many thanks.

Although the thing I´am interested in is somewhat multimedia stuff,
it depends totaly of the PPC behaviour, and therefore I think belongs
to be questioned here.
Please don´t blame me if you don´t think so..
At the Moment I use Suse7.1, soon 7.3.
I would like to escape from Mac proprietary PCI Hardware, and I did
not find yet an Answer to this question:
Would PCI Stuff work under Linux in my PPC when it is prooved (eg by
Suse Hardware database) to work under Linux on an Intel System?
e.g. a TV card with videotext and audio/video capturing features.. ?
(the only card available (in Europe) for PPC seems to be the Formac
ProTV, with very poor Video Performance and bad (scratchy) audio
features, I owned that thing and I am giving it back to my dealer)
or (since the new Powermacs come without a Sound in connector) a Card
with Sound Input?
gruss Jochen
Is it supported?
I used yast2 to add the netatalk package, then did a ./atalk start
from the /etc/init.d/ library and got a segmentation fault. Do I
need to do anything else, I have searched the net for netatalk and
suse and found that the sbin is now init.d (due to standards) and I
am now slightly at a loss.
Hi,
I purchased the PPC version of Suse 7.3 tried to install it on a Powerbook Wallstreet G3
and I have difficulties for the generation of the XF86Config file. The
system generates a wrong XF86Config file that doesn't work.
I had this problem earlier on my version of LinuxPPC and solved it with
a config file tuned by someone a long time ago. This doesn't seem to work
anymore.
I used some kernel arguments in Bootx like
video=atyfb:vmode=14,cmode=32:mclk=83
and tweaked the XF86Config file as I could but no way...
Does someone have a solution ?
Cheers
Damir

Hi,
I just saw online a hint how to install the Studio Display 15'' under Suse Linux 7.3. It's written that I have to set a Kernel Parameter (http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_apple_tft.html). BUT: Does this mean that I can't install the Linux on my G4 without installing it from another monitor and then (after installing) setting the kernel parameters? If not, when and how can I set the parameters?
I have at the moment a Linux 7.0 running on my G4 (which I installed with the "help" of a seperate monitor): is it maybe easier to simply update the system: Does he accept the "older" kernel-paramters automatically? The fact is that I'd like to reinstall my whole computer with formating it (also the MacOS-Partition)...so I'm not very happy with "updating the system". But if there's no other "easy" way...
Thank you for your help
greetings from switzerland
