Hi,
I got some problems (disk access denied, bus errors,...) that led me to
go into single user mode and fsck my partitions. I noticed then that
there were some directories created in the tmp directory, called "dev"
and "etc", and one file in the / directory called "success" with 0
length. At reboot, these files disapeared. Does anybody know if this
could be a sign of a hacked computer ? I mean could someone have
installed a rootkit or some such ?
I'm not paranoid but this indeed seems strange.
Cheers
Damir

Hi there,
I'm sorry for sending you this query maybe you can help since I cant find
any info elsewhere,
Ive installed suse 10.0 on a b50 all is well there. The problem I have is
that I've set up another b50
With fedora 5 but I have a garbled screen problem. I was wondering if I can
copy xorg.conf from suse and apply it to fedora.
Once again sorry ..
Well, I flashed one of my 2940UW cards with the apple rom. It was seen
by OS 9 with the new memory, but it wouldn't access the Apple CD drive.
After re-installing the old RAM, it was fine. I guess it is time to
give up. I've just never seen memory do this and I have been a PC tech
for 15 years......oh well....thanx for all the suggestions.

I'm trying to install SuSE10 on a Mac Mini, having successfully
installed it on an old iMac DV400. I carefully followed all the
directions at http://www.opensuse.org/PPC, and the install goes
through OK, but nothing I can do will persuade lilo to be happy.
When I run it, I get:
linux:~ # /sbin/lilo
running on pmac_new
BOOT_DEVICEPATH = /pci@f4000000/ata-6@d/disk@0:2
OTHER_DEVICEPATH = /pci@f4000000/ata-6@d/disk@0:7
hmount: /dev/hda2: not a Macintosh HFS volume (Invalid argument)
It's this last line I'm concerned about. The partition map is:
Partition map (with 512 byte blocks) on '/dev/hda'
#: type name length base ( size )
1: Apple_partition_map 'Apple ' 63 @ 1
2: Apple_Bootstrap 'bootstrap ' 20480 @ 64 ( 10.0M)
3: Apple_HFS 'spare_hfs ' 20480 @ 20544 ( 10.0M)
4: Linux 'spare_linux ' 20480 @ 41024 ( 10.0M)
5: Linux 'swap ' 2048000 @ 61504 (1000.0M)
6: Linux 'root ' 106573104 @ 2109504 ( 50.8G)
7: Apple_HFS 'Apple_HFS_Untitled_4' 47618864 @ 108682608 ( 22.7G)
8: Apple_Free ' ' 16 @ 156301472
My reading of the opensuse.org web pages is that I should direct the
bootloader to /dev/hda2. hda6 is root. hda7 contains a MacOS install.
My lilo.conf is:
boot=/dev/hda2
timeout=100
default=linux
activate
image=/boot/vmlinux
initrd=/boot/initrd
label=linux
append="root=/dev/hda6 sysrq=1"
other=/dev/hda7
label=macos
What am I doing wrong?
J
We dowloaded the ISO to install from the net. We where unable to make
the sistem boot with it.
We tryed the following:
mkdir testcd
mkdir testcd/boot
cp /cdrom/boot/zImage.prep.initrd testcd/boot
mkisofs -prep-boot boot/zImage.prep.initrd -r -v -o test.iso testcd
we burned the ISO and we are unable to boot
our boot command line:
boot cdrom:,zimage root=/dev/cdrom load_ramdisk=1 console=ttyS0,9600
Any help will be appreciated

With everyone's help I have been able to get SuSE 10.1 "loaded" to the
point of rebooting. However, the only way I could get this far was to
select the "Do NOT Install Boot Loader" option. Again, I've scoured
the various SuSE sites (open and closed) and not seen definitively how
to load a workable boot loader for this particular box.
Therefore, anyone with IBM CHRP experience (Olaf?) could you PLEASE give
an experienced AIX guy and SuSE x86 supporter some detailed instructions
on what/how to accomplish this?
Quite frankly, installing on x86 was quite a "piece of cake" compared to
this and I cannot believe that if Linux is to succeed on IBM Power boxen
the distro that succeeds will be the one that overcomes this hassle.
As Olaf's recommendation I did read through the PPC:Boot pseries info
but it didn't exactly state how one would go about accomplishing this feat.
Anyone? Olaf?
Thanks all.
Bob
Last week I posted a question regarding the partitioning of the SCSI HDD
on the IBM RS6000 B50 ppc system to allow the install of SuSE 10.1 Alpha
1. None of the suggestions work well and I ultimately had to boot into
rescue and use fdisk to construct a partition table manually.
So I finally got to the point where the YaST install accepts the disk
for use and all that needs to be selected and/or defined has been done.
However, I cannot continue because it complains that I have errors that
need to be resolved. The ONLY area that indicates a problem is the
booting section. It states that a boot loader must be selected. It
goes on to say that if none is selected it will default to the ppc
loader. I've tried every option that is available including setting its
location to the MBR, /dev/sda1, /dev/sda, /dev/sda3, etc. NOTHING seems
to be acceptable here.
So, before I through in the towel and relegate this machine to the rear
of the upper closet shelf, is there anything that I am blatantly missing
that would get me by this point of the install? The reason is that I
am familiar with SuSE 8 and 9.x on X86 machines (I run several in
production) and I've NEVER had this much difficulty installing it
before, What should be an hour job has turned into several days so far
and that's NOT fun!
Any pointers?
Thanks
Does anyone know if there is support for the VooDoo 5 Mac version? I
have a chance to pick up one with 64MB VRAM on it, but want to make
sure that it would be usable before I do.....Thanx

OK - finally made a bootable 10.1 iso and got my IBM B50 ppc box to boot
from it. I have to run YaST in text mode however and I've gotten to the
point of partitioning. Because my 9.1GB SCSI HDD was previously
partitioned by AIX with LVM it appears that the SuSE installer won't
tough it. It requires me to use the Expert mode of the partitioning to
manually do it. Shouldn't be a problem, but no matter what combination
I try it will NOT accept my setting when I use the "Finish" button.
I am trying to partition similar to the following:
1st partition is the boot partition (/boot)
2nd partition is the swap partition (swap)
3rd partition is a reiser mounted (/)
Can someone familiar with this PLEASE recommend the "expert" settings I
should use or could use to assign the entire HDD to the SuSE install???
Any/All suggestions/recommendations appreciated.
