Hi,
I got some problems (disk access denied, bus errors,...) that led me to
go into single user mode and fsck my partitions. I noticed then that
there were some directories created in the tmp directory, called "dev"
and "etc", and one file in the / directory called "success" with 0
length. At reboot, these files disapeared. Does anybody know if this
could be a sign of a hacked computer ? I mean could someone have
installed a rootkit or some such ?
I'm not paranoid but this indeed seems strange.
Cheers
Damir

Hello everybody.
Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ?
I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp
and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS
formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there).
At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed
boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd
I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep
and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html
(ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd).
At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed
boot floppy:,\zImage
In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical:
The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so).
The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that.
The system freezes (or reboots after a long time).
(None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.)
So obviously, none of these approaches works for me.
What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied
as files on an MS-DOS disk?
Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p.
BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251.
Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions.

Hello all,
while developing a php based website hosted on my up-to-date SuSE 7.3/PPC

helped:

This is pretty much the same problem that occurred with earlier squid
builds. On the PPC it seems impossible to reuse a varargs list without first
re-initializing it. Can someone point me to the principle problem with
varargs on PPC? Is this a compiler bug? Is the reuse illegal?
Greetings, Uwe
Hi people
hav anyone experienced to install KDE 3 on Linux SuSE PPC 7.3? I downloaded KDE from suse site, but after installation with yast the login is always with KDE 2.
Infact KDE not update the old version but it addict itself on /opt/kde3. Plus, if I start kde 3 from failsafe it run in a very slow mode, such KDE 2.
Anyone has some advice?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
this is a quit general question but I am interested in your knowledge:
- Can you recommend installing Linux (e.g. SuSE) on a Mac?
- Isn't OS X better?
- Do you run OS X (or similar) parallel to Linux? Or do you run Linux
under OS X (similar to vmware there are some "emulators" I think?)
Thank you for your answers,
yours
Tobias
Hi,
I'm running currently into some questions:
My Setup:
SUSE PPC 7.0
Apache/1.3.19 Server
PHP 4.0.6 (manually compiled)
Now im wondering. I would like to recompile apache myself, so that i works
like the SuSE one. I managed to compile PHP and MySQL so that they are like
the distributed ones.
Short said: I want to Upgrade some Packages without breaking the SUSE PPC
7.0 Scheme...
Any hints..
Thanks.

hi,
I tried to install suse linux 7.1/PPC on an IBM Power Series 850
machine (Model 6070-A2L, Power 604 processor, 64MB ram, 340 MB IDE
disk, IDE cd rom drive, firmware 1.10) with no success. while this machine isn't
explicitely listed as supported on the suse web site, according to
http://penguinppc.org/projects/hollis/carolina/ it should be possible.
I dd'ed zImage.prep and ramdisk.image.prep.gz to two 1.44 disks,
booted from the first, entered the kernel parameters "root=/dev/fd0
load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd ramdisk_size=50000" and inserted the 2nd
disk.
the installer came up, I selected installation via ftp, entered the IP
& server configuration, the installer successfully loaded the data
into the ramdisk. the "starting yast" window came up but the progress
bar stopped at 50% and didn't continue. I waited for more than 30
minutes, but nothing happened.
I successfully installed AIX 4.4 on this machine so I don't think that
the hardware is faulty.
Any ideas ? Did anybody ever succeed installing suse linux on an IBM
PPC 850 ?
tnx in advance.
