Hello everybody.
Did anyone manage to successfully boot Linux on an RS/6000 43p 140 ?
I tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/7.1/unsorted/prep/43p_140/zImage.140.chrp
and followed the instructions in the German SuSE manual (ie copied the image to an MS-DOS
formatted floppy disk, renaming the image to "zimage" there).
At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed
boot floppy:,zimage root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 fake_initrd
I also tried using ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/kernel/BETA/deflt/zImage.prep
and followed the instructions on http://sdb.suse.de/de/sdb/html/olh_ppc_43p140.html
(ie copied the image as a raw disk image using dd).
At the OpenFirmware prompt I typed
boot floppy:,\zImage
In BOTH cases, the symptoms are identical:
The floppy is read (takes half a minute or so).
The OpenFirmware cursor moves to the next line or the line after that.
The system freezes (or reboots after a long time).
(None of the IPL or memory messages ever appear.)
So obviously, none of these approaches works for me.
What is the difference between the images copied as raw disk images and those copied
as files on an MS-DOS disk?
Which approach is *supposed* to work? Both are declared as solutions for 140 43p.
BTW: The firmware version of the machine I tried this on is TIG97251.
Thanks in advance for any hints or solutions.

I have a Dec 1999 g3 400 iMAc.
Since I am about to install OSX 10.1 and OS 9.2, Apple indicates updating
Firmware to 4.1.9 Anyone know if this will thwart my plans to install SuSe
Linux 7.1 ?
I read the following on the SuSE site, but it is a little vague:
<<Apple Cronology
* January 2001
* These machines have a newer firmware, the bootloader is unable to open
the textmode
* iMacs can be used with 7.1
* Cube, Titanium Powerbook G4 can be used with 7.1
* G4 can be used with 7.1, the Radeon and nVidia cards are unsupported,
remove the SCSI card, onboard ethernet may not work
* iBook2 works (unconfirmed), enter "boot cd:,\\yaboot" on the firmware
prompt.
* August 2000
* These machines have a newer firmware, the bootloader is unable to open
the textmode
* G4, Cube, iMac, iBook, Powerbook can be used with 7.0, kernel 2.2.18
recommended
* the available Radeoncards are unsupported
>>
It seems to imply that the firmware on the newer macs is not compatible.
Well if I update my older Mac with the latest Firmware update 4.1.9, it
sounds like I may shoot my Linux installation plans in the foot! Anyone
tried this?
Thanks
Phlyz
Ide-scsi emulation has worked til kernel-2.4.7-pre3. With any newer
kernel (I tried 2.4.10/2.4.12/2.4.16), mounting my ide-cdrom freezes
the whole system. This must be ppc specific. My i386 system is working
fine with 2.4.16. PPC platform is b&w g3.
Has anyone on the list the same problem?

This is XFree86 3.3.6, try /etc/X11/XF86Config.
I think the X Server has problems on some chips with 24 bit. Try the
command "fbset", you will get a line like that:
geometry 640 480 640 480 16
The "16" is the color depth, if you have 24 then do a
fbset -a -depth 8
Then run "sax2 -a". There is a line DefaultColorDepth in
/etc/X11/XF86Config. change it from 8 to 15 and everything should be
fine.

BUGS
Main feature not yet implemented...
Hello,
Personaly I received an old Powerbook G3 at work (year 1999 or after)
Installation of SuSE 7.3PPC without problems (or almost).
But X-server config with SAX2: problems.
Here follows Xfree86.log.o, sorry if it is long:
The ATI Rage 128 chipsets: ATI Rage 128 RE (PCI) is well detected.
... but it ends up with:
Fatal server error:
no screens found
... and no xserver (see end of script), not even at 600x400 resolution:
nothing.
Does anybody knows how to solve the problem
I'll look at
ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/supplementary/X/suse73/4.2.0/http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_71_xf420.html
tomorrow ... when I go to work.
Thanks for any help
Alain

It can be found here:
ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/supplementary/X/suse73/4.2.0/http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_71_xf420.html
Same applies to 7.3.

Hi,
I¹ve installed SuSE 7.3 on my G4/450. I¹ve changed the original CD with an
³Apple² CD-RW ( Matshita CW 7586).
When i installed SuSE i¹ve got an problem to find CD2. I¹ve used
/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi like SuSE said and edited the boot.local in the same
way.
The installation was fine, but now no CD will be shown.
With cdrecord scanbus the device was found as a SCSI-device (it is IDE).
What is wrong an how can i get my cd running ??
Thx a lot !
Flanders
Regarding the ims tt I am inpressed that you got one. It worked on the
installation till yast restarted the machine.
apparently yast2 does a poor default(vga ) if it does not find a card it
wants.
There is a note about this in the suse database. It
worked perfectly in 7.1 , but again thanks for working on it.
One other thought, do you need beta testers, some
of the folks on this list would probably be helpful.

There is hope. I ordered one card from ebay. Your problem is that you
need at least the penguin on the console, X is another story. You may
try "video=imsttfb" or play with the monitor resolutions in MacOS.
And it seems there are 3 twin turbo versions around. Something with
128bit, a "simple" twin turbo and something else. I cant remember where
I read that, but it was in the last days...

It is compiled against glibc 2.2, you have glibc 2.1.3.
Just recompile the src.rpm.

Hello,
Little problem
My webserverSuSE7.2i386/Postfix/Cyrus-Imap on pentium/PC crashed
I decided to install Postfix temporarily on a G3
Everything goes fine for the installation of SuSE 7.3
My /var/spool/mail mailboxes are filling up normally
but ...
Impossible to connect to the G3 server with kmail
Impossible to make a POP connexion with the G3 server and to extract thus my
mails from the mailbox.
alain@lx93:~> telnet localhost 110
Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
alain@lx93:~>
But connexion to port 25 (SMTP) is possible. It is even possible to send a
message.
alain@lx93:~> telnet localhost 25
Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 lx93.ihe.be ESMTP Postfix on SuSE Linux 7.3 (PPC)
quit
221 Bye
Connection closed by foreign host.
I thought there was a firewall problem because SuSE has now a tendency to
install a firewall without warning:
but ...
lx93:/home/alain # ipchains -L
ipchains: Incompatible with this kernel
lx93:/home/alain # iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)

lx93:/home/alain # rcpersonal-firewall status
Checking for SuSE personal firewall: Not started.
Thus no filters.

Thus what could be the problem considering that I had no problems with SuSE
