The iBook G3 come with a white LED that's active if the device sleeps.
On 10.2 during installation you seem to misuse it to signal hard disk
activity. How can I disable it?

Hi,
I got some problems (disk access denied, bus errors,...) that led me to
go into single user mode and fsck my partitions. I noticed then that
there were some directories created in the tmp directory, called "dev"
and "etc", and one file in the / directory called "success" with 0
length. At reboot, these files disapeared. Does anybody know if this
could be a sign of a hacked computer ? I mean could someone have
installed a rootkit or some such ?
I'm not paranoid but this indeed seems strange.
Cheers
Damir

Good news: after many days of compiling software, the long awaited
update of Packman packages for openSUSE 10.2 PPC are available. Over 500
packages are uploaded to the usual location:
ftp://spike.fa.gau.hu/pub/pmppc102/
Many of them are tested by me, but of course, I could not try all of the
packages. If you have a problem, please let me know, and I'll try to fix it.
Now I'll also try to catch up with packages for openSUSE 10.1. Bye,
CzP

I saw a thread in the archives where Peter Flodin has created a page to
get openSUSE running on the PS3. I a PS3 myself, and was curious to know
if any progress has been made. If it's just a matter of testing
something, I'd be more than happy to do so.

Brandon

I have uploaded an 80MB boot.iso for PReP systems.
boot/ppc/zImage.prep.initrd is the bootfile, it should be possible to
load this file also from harddisk or via tftp.
A 10.2-bet2 testinstall was almost successful. But I forgot to replace
the installed kernel-default.rpm from the orginial install media with the
one on the uploaded boot.iso, so my MTX+ is stuck now until I reset it.
The bootloader install will not work out of the box. YaST will not
figure out a valid boot device. To workaround this, go into the
bootloader config in YaST. There is a pulldown menu on the right side.
Select 'Edit configuration file'. Add 'default=linux' and
'boot=/dev/sda' as global options for lilo.conf.
After package installation, YaST will reboot the system. It does not
know that the shipped kernel-default will not work on PReP. To work
around this, boot again from the boot.iso. Instead of fresh install or
upgrade, select 'Other -> boot into installed system', and continue with
the installation. Once you have done that, install the kernel-default.rpm
from the boot.iso.
sax2 is currently unusable, it will write an incomplete and unusuable
xorg.conf. I dont know in what shape xorg7.1 is for the graphics cards
in PReP systems. The mga driver may work, but better stick with fbdev.
'Xorg -configure' should be able to write a xorg.conf that can be used
as a start.

Does this happen only during package install, or also in the second step
of the installation when YaST configures your hardware?
It is probably specific to this model. Open a bug at

Ok, so far I have successfully installed v10.2 on a PowerMac 9600/300 with the following specs
Sonnet G4/700/1M
1024MB RAM
Adaptec 19160 PCI SCSI Card
Promise PCI ATA100 Card
ATI Radeon 7000 w/ 32MB
Opti PCI USB 1.1 card
18GB U160 SCSI drive
Lite-on DVD-RW
Well, the new KDE theme is different. Other than the annoying habit of the K-menu to come up(found and CHANGED) when I hover the mouse over it, the desktop is nice. I did have a few questions tho:
1. Why is there no 3d support for the Radeon 7000 I think this has been covered before, but I couldn't find it on google. It would be nice to be able to make use of the 3d on this card since ATI doesn't even offer a driver for Linux/PPC
2. My monito information wasn't saved by the installer. It defaulted back to 800x600 VESA.
3. When the system first started after the installation was done, it said it was in runlevel 5, but there were no logins available on any of the consoles. I had to switch to runlevel 3 from an X console to get them.
4. How come Midnight Commander is no longer a part of the default install?
5. Before, the apple key was the alt key in X and the Alt key worked in the console. Now, it's always the apple key.
So far so good. This is a much better release than v10.1. Keep up the good work guys. What's planned for 10.3?

Whilst there is some time until Playstation 3 gets launched in my part
of the world (March for Australia), I thought I would promote the
discussion and collection of resources required to get openSUSE
running on the PS3.
For those interested, the PS3 is a 3.2 GHz Cell processor that is
Power 970 architecture compliant. It only has 256Mb DRAM, which should
be sufficient as a multimedia front-end and basic other use.
Linux runs virtualized on the PS3, (all hardware calls are done
through the hypervisor).
Sony seems to be interested in Linux and together with IBM and Toshiba
(the consortium behind the Cell processor), are actively providing
patches against the Linux kernel for the cell processor and the
Playstation3 device support specifically.
Resources:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/
Specifically the 'PS3 Linux Distributor's Starter Kit'
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-linux-distro-k…
The playstation uses kboot that gets installed into the playstation
flash rom and is selectable from the Playstations system menu as the
boot image.
The starter kit above has a customised kboot for installing Fedora Core 5.
It would probably be possible to use the Fedora kboot and start a
Fedora install and then do openSUSE similar to these instructions for
Ubuntu. http://www.louiscandell.com/ps3/
But long term the first task would be create a customized kboot for openSUSE.
I have created http://en.opensuse.org/PS3 as a location for
documenting progress.
