Hi,
I got some problems (disk access denied, bus errors,...) that led me to
go into single user mode and fsck my partitions. I noticed then that
there were some directories created in the tmp directory, called "dev"
and "etc", and one file in the / directory called "success" with 0
length. At reboot, these files disapeared. Does anybody know if this
could be a sign of a hacked computer ? I mean could someone have
installed a rootkit or some such ?
I'm not paranoid but this indeed seems strange.
Cheers
Damir

Hi there,
I'm sorry for sending you this query maybe you can help since I cant find
any info elsewhere,
Ive installed suse 10.0 on a b50 all is well there. The problem I have is
that I've set up another b50
With fedora 5 but I have a garbled screen problem. I was wondering if I can
copy xorg.conf from suse and apply it to fedora.
Once again sorry ..
I'm trying like heck to install SuSE 10 on an IBM pSeries (710)...but
not having much (any) luck. During the install it provides two options
for bootloaders, ppc or none. ppc doesn't work and if I choose none
then...well...I can't boot to it! In fact, I haven't been able to even
boot to the installed system from the CD install app.
Anyone installed 10.0 on this hardware yet? Where am I going wrong?
I'm almost certain it has to do with my partition setup, but I've
tried it with and without a boot partition - and I have created/kept
the PReP partition (maybe I should blow it away and recreate).
I'm a newbie but there's no need to be kind - let me have it, so long
as it gets this thing going! :)
Hi.
I am having a problem installing SUSE on my RS6K, and as you may have
guessed already it's probably related to the bootloader.
I've tried reading up on all the info on this subject, but I still get
the same "The proposal contains an error that must be resolved before
continuing" seemingly no matter what I try.
I've tried booting into rescue mode from the CD and running
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=4M count=1
as suggested by Olaf Hering to another person on this mailing list a
while ago. After booting into the installation progran, I've tried
leaving everything as it is, only disabling the bootloader option (also
as suggested by Olaf in the same post), but this still produces the same
error. I've tried messing around with deleting partitions and stuff in
order to try to make the installer use the entire disk as suggested but
to no avail. Something that further complicates things is that I'm using
an old 2mb matrox s3 card as the GXT3000P I have isn't supported. Now,
the S3 works fine, but this means I can only run the curses-based
installer, making some of the options and procedures named differently
than in the graphical installer (or so it seems, reading the
installation guides), so the existing guides are sometimes confusing.
Anyway, I would be extremely grateful if someone would take the time to
explain step by step what to do to get SUSE installed on my RS6K. Seeing
how many people seem to have a hard time making it work on the Model 150
and/or the B50, I'm sure it would ultimately save the people on this
list a lot of headache, not having to answer the same questions again
and again.
Thanks in advance
/P.
I've been doing some testing. I have a PowerMac 9600/300 now. The
processor is a 300Mhz 604ev, which has 1MB L2 cache on the daughtercard
running @ 100Mhz. I also picked up a Sonnet G3/400/1M card. Here are
some of the results:

As you can see, Linux incorrectly identifies the L2 cache value for
both processors as 256k. Also, the dmesg results for the G3 card say
that the backside cache is diabled. I am still running v10.0/RC1, so
I dunno if the release version would be any different. Is there
something wrong with these results, or is there something I am doing
wrong? The bogomips for the G3 would be consistent with a 400Mhz
processor, but the Mac OS shows that the G3 is running at 445Mhz w/ 8MB
L2 cache.......weird. Thanx

I'm trying to install Suse-10 on B50 (PPC).
I have created the following partition map using pdisk
Apple_partition_map 63 @ 1
Apple_Bootstrap 2000 @ 64 (for eventual bootloader)
Linux swap 502M
Linux root 8G
I have adjusted the partition section in YaST per instructions
/dev/sda1 0.0 MB unknown
/dev/sda2 .9 MB PPC Prep Boot
/dev/sda3 502MB F Linux swap swap
/dev/sda4 7.9GB F Linux native (Reiser) /
But it won't accept my Installation Settings because of 'an error'
My bootloader section has a blank "Location", but I don't see why.
Under Boot Loader Settings: Kernel Section
I have the following:
Section Name: Linux
Kernel: /boot/vmlinux
Initial RAM Disk: /boot/initrd
Root Device: /dev/sda4 (/ from above)
VGA Mode (1280x1024x16)
Other Kernel Parameters: quiet sysrq=1
Can anyone suggest what must be done differently?
Thanks.

SuSE currently ships valgrind (http://www.valgrind.org), a debugging
and profiling tool, as part of the amd64 and x86 builds. Valgrind
3.1 is coming soon, and we will be providing full support for ppc32-linux
for the first time.
If you want to use Valgrind on ppc32, now would be a good time to
check out, test and let us know of any problems you find.
svn co svn://svn.valgrind.org/valgrind/trunk
cd trunk
./autogen.sh
./configure --prefix=..
make install
