Hi,
I got some problems (disk access denied, bus errors,...) that led me to
go into single user mode and fsck my partitions. I noticed then that
there were some directories created in the tmp directory, called "dev"
and "etc", and one file in the / directory called "success" with 0
length. At reboot, these files disapeared. Does anybody know if this
could be a sign of a hacked computer ? I mean could someone have
installed a rootkit or some such ?
I'm not paranoid but this indeed seems strange.
Cheers
Damir

Hi there,
I'm sorry for sending you this query maybe you can help since I cant find
any info elsewhere,
Ive installed suse 10.0 on a b50 all is well there. The problem I have is
that I've set up another b50
With fedora 5 but I have a garbled screen problem. I was wondering if I can
copy xorg.conf from suse and apply it to fedora.
Once again sorry ..
Here are a few things I have noticed. Remember, I am using Old World
macs....
I added the MacOS patition, /dev/hda6, under YaST. However, when I
checked the directory, which I labeled /macos, I found the text file
about "Where did all the files go?". So, I looked at /etc/fstab, and
the filesystem type was "hfs". I changed it to "hfs+", and was given
an error when I tried to remount it. I changed the filesystem type to
"hfsplus" and when I remounted it this time it worked fine. I went
back into YaST's partitioner and checked to see if there was an option
for the Apple HFS+ filesystem, and it only listed 1 Apple filesystem
type.
Do I need to use the ramdisk image to boot the system with an updated
kernel? When I uncheck the ramdisk option, and input sda3 as my root
device, I get a kernel panic because it can't find the root device. I
am assuming that it is not loading the Adaptec SCSI module for some
reason. Checking the "Force SCSI" option does not work as well. I
have found that since I used YOU to update the kernel that the
installation system no longer comes up when I boot using the newer
ramdisk, so I don't know if it is a big deal about using the ramsdisk
or not. I have 384MB, and I have a good deal of free RAM available.
One thing I have noticed is that the USB drivers seem to be loaded
before the SCSI drivers using the installation system. It seems that
the USB drive gets labeled /dev/sda and the SCSI drive gets bumped to
/dev/sdb. After updating my kernel with YOU, It properly loads the
adaptec driver and sees /dev/sda3 properly. Perhaps a warning should
be given during installation when USB and SCSI drives are detected. I
realize that the majority of systems out there use IDE, but there are
still many of us that prefer the dependability and speed of SCSI. I
realize that a lot of devices are made to look like SCSI in Linux as
well as WinDoZe, but it seems there would be a more intelligent way to
set this up....
Also, I think I had brought this up once before. Why is it that when I
am running under KDE, I have to use "control open-apple Fx" to get to a
text terminal, but when I am on a text terminal, I use the standard
"control alt Fx" key combination. I know that KDE has an option to
edit the key combos, but can this one be modified? It would be nice to
have the regular combo all the time.
Thanx

I have a DTC PCI card with the RZ1000 module. This card shows up in the
lspci list, but I can't figure out how to enable it. I tried modeprobe
rz1000, but was told module not found. The card is assigned IRQ 25. Am
I using the correct module name? Do I need to complie the module(and if
so, how?)? I'm looking to use it for IDE CD drives only, and have read
that there are some known bugs with this chipset, but it appears that
there is a stable driver for it. Thanx

Hi,
I've succesfully installed SuSE 10 on an IBM RS6000 44P 270 machine.
It works fine except for one thing: I can't get the video card work.
It is an IBM GXT-3000P.
Problems started during the setup: I get two small screen with some
garbled text, I had to use a console to complete the installation.
Is there a way to use this card with SuSE? Or I had better replace it?
(That is not very easy, either.) Did anyone have the same problem? Any
workarounds? I think this is a standard video card in this line of
rs6k-s, so a lot of potential users might be experiencing the same.
Any idea?
Thanks,
Imre Polik

I have Suse 10.0 running on an old Blueberry iMAC
with one small annoyance. The display is off center,
and the left inch or so is cut off. I have not found
any solutions searching the web. Anyone here have any
suggestions or solutions?
Thanks!

Hi Magnus, hi there everybody,
your description was quite helpfull, but doesn't work with OpenSuSE as it should.
Your solution showed me the necessary option to set to activate/clone the VGA-Port.
SAX2 offers some the driver options but not those needed. So I looked arround
which files might be the right ones. Some files are "resistant" against changes (checksums ?)
some seem not to be functional. Does anybody know in which file(s) I have to add the
necessary options to acces them with SAX. The docs I read didn't give me the informations I needed.
Thanks for your help.

Having just got a cheap iBook from my work (500MHz G3), I decided to install
OpenSUSE on it, and it went fine. Boots, runs KDE, no worry. Score one for the
community version of OpenSUSE-PPC! I've used SuSE for years (since 7.3) on x86
but this is my first venture into the Linux-on-PPC world.
There are, however, a few outstanding problems with this setup that I was
hoping someone could help with.
First, my wireless network. I have just bought a wireless 802.11g router and
dongle (matched pair from Buffalo) to allow the new laptop to connect to the
wide world. The hardware basically works fine (at least, in unencrypted mode,
a WinXP laptop can connect and browse; encryption is a whole other story).
However, in SUSE, there are problems.
The dongle is labelled on the box as a Buffalo USB AirStation G54
(WLI-U2-KG54). YaST recognised the dongle during installation and set it up as
a MELCO WLI-U2-KG54 (Buffalo's website seems to call this device a
WLI-U2-KG54-AI). The settings are:
Device Name: wlan-bus-usb-2-1:1.0
IP address assigned using DHCP [the DHCP server of the router is enabled]
Started automatically at boot
However, if I use any of the tools that seem to be available to find a WiFi
network (e.g. KWiFiManager), they say that there is no wireless interface, and
hence cannot find the router.
Any ideas on how to make this work? I'm fine with wired LANs (at home network
level, anyway) but have never delved into wireless before.
Second, the iBook won't make any sound in KDE. The hardware is fine - I get
the Apple chord when the machine first boots, but nothing thereafter.
Again, YaST says that the sound card is recognised and supported, listing card
number 0 as Integrated Sound (awacs), with the driver snd-powermac. But sounds
don't make any noise. Volume is set to 80%, and none of the settings in the
mixer are at zero. At least, none that I can change. AlsaMixerGUI shows
several settings that won't produce a bar when I drag in them, including PC
Speaker, which is worrying.
Once more - any ideas about this one?
Third, the iBook won't suspend. If I select "Suspend to disk" from the
KPowersave icon in the system tray, I get an error message:
The kernel version "vmlinuz" in /boot does not match the running kernel
version "2.6.13-15-default". Resuming with this kernel will not work. If you
know what you are doing, you can override this in
/etc/sysconfig/powersave/sleep with the variable
SUSPEND2DISK_IGNORE_KERNEL_MISMATCH=yes
What's the best way to fix this and allow the machine to enter suspend mode (I
do, BTW, have the resume option in lilo set to my swap partition, following
the advice in the PPC pages on the website).
Finally, I understand that there is no official Macromedia Flash player for
PPC linux. However, I've heard of a few open-source ones. Can anyone make a
recommendation? Basically, I want my son to be able to use the Flash games on
the BBC website, so sound and interactivity are a must if he's to be able to
use the iBook.
Thanks in advance for any help!
