Fwd: Re: [suse-ppc] SuSEppc 7.3 on new Powerbook G3 with ATI Radeon ... I have equivalent problem
Hello, Personaly I received an old Powerbook G3 at work (year 1999 or after) Installation of SuSE 7.3PPC without problems (or almost). But X-server config with SAX2: problems. Here follows Xfree86.log.o, sorry if it is long: The ATI Rage 128 chipsets: ATI Rage 128 RE (PCI) is well detected. ... but it ends up with: Fatal server error: no screens found ... and no xserver (see end of script), not even at 600x400 resolution: nothing. Does anybody knows how to solve the problem I'll look at ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/supplementary/X/suse73/4.2.0/ http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_71_xf420.html tomorrow ... when I go to work. Thanks for any help Alain ===================== XFree86 Version 4.1.0 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6510) Release Date: 2 June 2001 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. Hello,
did anybody get the X-Server running appropriately on this machine? Mine does not know the (new?) ATI-card, and therefore works only with 8 (nice and fance :-) colours - of course not really usable. I searched the web everywhere, but could not find any information - except for Debian, which still seems to be a little bit too complicated to me. Because I successfully installed the new X-Free-Server 4.2.0 for Darwin/Mac OS X I wonder, why there are problems at all - and why SuSE does not offer an up-to-date rpm yet for ppc ...
It can be found here: ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/supplementary/X/suse73/4.2.0/ http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_71_xf420.html Same applies to 7.3. Gruss Olaf -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented -------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I don't know if this can be of any help. I had problems to find a good working mode for a Powerbook 98 ("Wallstreet"). Here is the solution found : try to set up a frame buffer video (fbdev, without the ati driver) then take the generated XF86Config obtained and replace "fbdev" by "ati". You have to start the whole session with "no video driver" set, which you can remove afterwards. In any case, I attach my XF86Config file, if it may help you Cheers Damir bartydeux a écrit :
Hello,
Personaly I received an old Powerbook G3 at work (year 1999 or after) Installation of SuSE 7.3PPC without problems (or almost).
But X-server config with SAX2: problems.
Here follows Xfree86.log.o, sorry if it is long:
The ATI Rage 128 chipsets: ATI Rage 128 RE (PCI) is well detected.
... but it ends up with:
Fatal server error: no screens found
... and no xserver (see end of script), not even at 600x400 resolution: nothing.
Does anybody knows how to solve the problem
I'll look at
ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/ppc/supplementary/X/suse73/4.2.0/ http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/olh_ppc_71_xf420.html
tomorrow ... when I go to work.
Thanks for any help
Alain

Do you have this in your XF86Config? Option "reference_clock Mhz" "29.498928" Put it near the Driver "ati" line.
(--) ATI(0): Reference clock 157.5/11 (14.318) MHz. (II) ATI(0): Maximum clock: 112.00 MHz (II) ATI(0): Not using mode "1024x768" (hsync out of range)
It seems that it is not there. At least 4.1 needs that Option. I'm not sure if 4.2 does it still need. Gruss Olaf -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented...

Dear Olaf, There is no driver ATI referenced. Here is what I get in XF86Config (I remember that SAX2 did not work). I have the same XF86Config file in my G3 station (not laptop) and there it works without problem. # SaX autogenerated XF86Config file # Version 2.8 ...do not edit # Server fbdev # Section "Files" RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/PEX" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin7/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/kwintv" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/uni" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/xtest" ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" AllowMouseOpenFail EndSection Section "Keyboard" XkbModel "macintosh" XkbRules "xfree86" Protocol "Standard" XkbLayout "fr" EndSection Section "Pointer" Device "/dev/input/mice" Protocol "IMPS/2" EndSection Section "Monitor" VertRefresh 47-90 HorizSync 29-64 Identifier "Primary-Monitor" EndSection Section "Device" Option "noaccel" Identifier "Primary-Card" EndSection Section "Screen" Driver "fbdev" DefaultColorDepth 8 Device "Primary-Card" Monitor "Primary-Monitor" SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "default" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "default" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "default" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 32 Modes "default" EndSubSection EndSection And I still remain with 8 colours.
