how to create a boot cd

Hi there, I have a probably minor problem. For testing I installed OpenSuSE 10.0 PPC on a USB harddrive connected to an iBook. Direct booting from an USB device during startup is not possible on an iBook, especially when the USB-Device gets it powersupply via USB. Installing the System and running didn't cause any severe problems but the boot process is a little bit uncomfortable. (Booting the Installation CD and choosing to boot an installed system). The SuSE Manual describes a way how to create a boot CD for "normal" PCs. This is not applicable to a Mac respectively an iBook. I don't want to install a boot manager on the internal disk of the iBook, I want to keep it untouched. So, how can I create a boot cd for this case? Other distributions use "makebootdisk", but it has to be configured for the Distribution and the hardware and I do not know how. X11, xorg, and SAX2

Greetings, Have been trying for three days now to get the resolution on my 17" Apple Studio Display set properly under X11 and SUSE 10. However, no matter what I do, SUSE/SAX2 seem to take control of my settings and alter them according to what it thinks best. Have tried running Sax2 with the many different switches documented in the man pages, editing the xorg.conf on my own inserting the proper drivers and modelines, and copying working xorg.conf from prior distributions. Nothing works. The best I can get is a 1028x768@60Hz. When I try for the resolution I want (and which has worked fine under YDL, Debian, and Gentoo)--1280x1024@75, that setting is trumped somewhere and I end up with the resolution but at the wrong refresh rate, which results in a 2" black border surrounding the X11 display. How can I tell Sax2 or SUSE to back off and accept the settings that I want, that are appropriate for my monitor, and that have worked fine under other Linux distros? Bootsplash

Hello! I would like to know if it is possible to get a bootsplash with SuSE under ppc. I have a bootsplash under my Mac Mini with Gentoo. Is there a way to get the same result with SuSE? Thank you for any answer. Olivier

I can't tell you how many times I would call apple, just to be told it's a hardware issue and to call umax, and they say to call the makers of harddrive tool kit (if you owned a umax, you know why I say that, and then they say to call apple. That was total BS. And no, it wasn't only umax. They all had issues. Hell, I had three Umax S900's that everything was replaced in each one except the plastic case. Some of the items were replaced up to four times. I mean, come on, how many times can you replace a mother board, ram, drives power supply, etc. and this was a guy that just got into the front end of printing coming from a IBM sales background. That went ever real well! (not) We also had similar issues with (now I will say I own a S900 now that runs very well under OS9. It isn't one of that other three...I quit that h*ll hole. I also have an old Radius 81/110. We use it as a ftp box. Runs fine now that I replaced a bunch of stuff in it after it was new. Had a Power Computing box... I can't remember what the exact issues were on that but it was down more than up. The clone hardware sucks. Believe me.) My point is the hardware from apple IS more reliable. And no, I don't work for them and yes I do tend to hate some of the crap they pull on their customers. Sometimes they can be like Quark or Intuit as far as customer relations. In printing and design, the industry uses macs. I would like to have Quark and Adobe make some of their stuff run on Linux, but that's a fat chance. Same thing with RIP's. I have only seen Harlequin and Rampage RIP's run on winblows or mac. And what about color correction? Have you ever tried to calibrate a monitor in Linux? Call Tobias or Xrite and say the word Linux and see how long the conversation lasts. Visit the colorsync list on apple's site and you will see that no one has gotten any decent color calibration form a Linux monitor. Again, I like Linux for servers and tinkering...( I have done a few simple web site designs on 9.1 and YDL just to see if I could) along with end user web and email use. I like the speed. OSX is getting to be a resource pig! I can put linux on a box that has half the ram and it runs as fast or faster... Now, once you don't use the GUI, I think it would be close if not faster... The gui apple has is getting too fat. However, it works cleaner than any Linux I've seen. However, I don't have $500 video cards...I don't think I could ever bring my self to spend that much on such a thing. partition types on on iMac

Hello, I'm trying to install 10.0 on my iMac but the install fails when it tries to format my partitions - it says it can't change the type. I partitioned using pdisk under OSX, and I've tried marking the partitions as "Linux" and "Linux swap" but to no avail (not using the hex numbers, just the descriptions) . The install fails when it tries to format the swap partition. pdisk from the suse disks wouldn't let me change the type, and pdisk on the mac wouldn't let me write the partition table! Anybody come across this or have ant suggestions? Thanks, Chris

Mac OS X and Samba

I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask this question, but since I've seen several threads regarding Macs I thought I'd go ahead and ask. I apologize if it's not the correct place, this is my first posting. I'm having some issues getting some Mac OS X 10.2 Tiger machines to recognize Samba shares. I'm running Samba version 3 and they were able to connect up until about a month ago. The Mac users tell me they downloaded and installed an update at the beginning of August and that they keep them very up-to-date. I've read several forums that indicate it's not working in Mac OS X 10.2 Tiger and there have been several suggestions to make it work including clearing the Keychain on the Macs and setting 'encrypt passwords = yes' in the smb.conf file on the linux machine. I've tried clearing the keychain and I have all other Windows clients connecting using ecrypted passwords which would lead me to believe that it should be working fine. Any help or personal experiences with this are greatly appreciated.

The weird part is that it seems that only the PCI bus is affected. If I use the built-in SCSI controllers, I have no problems. It has enhanced KDE multimedia support, all kinds of audio and video support (only for those formats, which have OSS drivers, as Win32Codecs do not work here...), and some additional utilities. Just add it as an additional idditional installation source, and you are ready to install the packages. Some notes: - all packages were compiled on a G4 Pegasos ( http://www.pegasosppc.com/products.php ) - I added some CFLAGS, which seem to improve speed and lower CPU usage on G4. These are: "-mtune=G4 -maltivec -mabi=altivec" (borrowed from Gentoo's /etc/make.conf). I read the gcc man page, but I'm still not sure, if it breaks compatibilty with non Altivec PPC processors or not. I don't have access to other PPC processors, so please test it, and let me know. I'll recompile without it (or make a non optimized tree as well, if there is problem with it). Issue with PM 7500 and new memory

I've posed this before, but I have some updates. I installed some EDO memory on my PM7500. It has a 604e @ 200Mhz w/ 256k cache. WHen I installed the new memory, which had been advertised as 128MB chips, it showed up as 64MB. Mac OS 9 boots up with no issues at all and sees all the memory I have installed. However, when I reboot using BootX, None of my non-apple PCI cards will work Properly. I am using an Adaptec 2940U2W card, an Opti USB v1.1 card, and a Creative PCI 512. The SCSI card reports errors on the scanning of the hard drives and will not see either it or the CD-ROM. The Opti card, which I know works, will no longer initialize the USB mouse. No way to really check the sound card. Now, when I installed 2 of the original 16MB DIMMS in the fist bank, the system would see SCSI card and I could boot into Linux, but my passwork was no good. This is very weird. It has been suggested that there is a memory problem, but I have never seen a memory problem that would only keep the PCI card from working. I even installed an ATI Rage II PCI card with the apple rom, and it worked fine in both OS 9 as well as when I rebooted with BootX. My next step is to get an Apple Rom version of my SCSI card here in the next couple of days to see if that works. I also have a second 7500 that I will try swapping everything over to and see what happens. If anyone has any other suggestions, it would be appriciated. Problems with PowerMac 7500

I just got some new memory for my 7500 today. It was EDO RAM. While is is 168pin, the notches are different. I trimmed the notches to fit(DO NOT TRY THIS if you aren't an expert, it can damage your computer) since the 7500 is supposed to be able to use EDO RAM. Mac OS 9.1 booted with no problems and the system was very snappy(from 80MBs). However, when I rebooted into Linux with BootX, the Adaptec card reported an error reading my Linux Drive. After some experimenting, it seems that NONE of my PCI card will work properly now expect my ATI video card that has a MAC ROM on it. I have seen EDO RAM used with the 7500 before, and I have tried other EDO RAM chips and have the same problem. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? If it means that the RAM won't work, that's fine. However, it is just really weird that the MAC OS is fine where Linux fails. When I replace the old memory, it works fine......Very weird.
