[opensuse-marketing] Brand Awareness and associated Voodoo

The principle job of marketing is to create "Brand Awareness", it could in fact be argued that it is it's only function and anything else that a marketing team does, goes back to that simple statement. Brand awareness is driven by several factors Visibility Attractiveness Ubiquitousness Not sure that the last is even a proper word but it conveys the idea! :) Visibility: A good brand has to catch the eye, rivet the attention create a desire to know more about it Attractiveness: Once you have attention the good Brand has to be pleasing to the viewer such that it makes them want be associated with it. Ubiquitousness: In other words the brand has to be seen on a regular basis especially where it has a good "fit". ie: there is going to be greater impact if it is seen on the front page of a technology publication than in "House & Garden's Bathroom edition" Right now we are suboptimal on all fronts. Our logo doesn't convey the right feelings and it's not particularly attractive either in style or in colour. The two open source brands that have the highest awareness are Ubuntu and Firefox. It is not for no reason that the colours they use are ones that convey Warmth, vibrancy and reliability while at the same time demanding attention, Oranges Reds, Browns and Yellows. The colours are sexy and make the viewer feel good and excited. Green, does none of these things, green is a calming colour but doesn't immediately attract attention. The things our branding needs to convey, especially at this point is excitement and passion but also reliability and friendliness and be attractive enough to seize the viewers attention and have them wanting to know more. That's our problem right now, we are at the "New Brand" stage. Coca Cola for instance doesn't have that issue, their marketing is just about reminding, the same for MacDonalds. Ubuntu and firefox created a buzz around their brand by being attractive and warm and inviting and we need to do the same. In my opinion we need to look at our branding elements from a fresh start. Ubuntu and Firefox branding were both started from scratch with a strong brand in mind, we seem to have drifted into ours without little branding consideration.Our brand is strong within the community, but it doesn't lend itself to creating a strong brand outside the community So a couple of considerations: 1) The name openSUSE is cumbersome and I believe a return to simply SUSE would be a good first step. Novell has SUSE Enterprise and in fact from a branding perspective I preferred Novell Linux with the big red N 2) The colour pallet does not grab attention and so that needs to be rethought 3) Geeko does not engage the viewer in any meaningful way except for being familiar to the present community, he either needs rethinking or we go to an entirely different Logo. 4) A branding competition, open to all comers, would be a newsworthy event that would get us column inches and get the brand out there. Remember that this not about what we as a community like, it's about how we get a better branding impression and thus increase brand awareness. Hi there, I use hootsuite to manage my 7 twiiter accounts, 3 facebook pages and 1 Linkedin account from a browser. imho this is a great tool for online marketing and you can find few collaboration features as well. [opensuse-marketing] Event Summary Report?

I've discussed with a few folks on a short event summary report. It should be really brief so that everybody can send it out directly after an event - and later do a more lengthy report if desired. My list currently has: * 1 page only - to send it out quickly * how many DVDs did you take? How many DVDs did you distribute? * how many people where at the event? At the booth? * three most asked questions/topics at booth? * What was the most interesting comment, question, talk you heard? * Will you blog about the event - and where? * Who staffed the booth? * Did you have a talk? Which topic? Will you provide slides for others to use? Do you think this would be usefull? What should get added to the list? I'll put the above tomorrow on the wiki (with your suggested changed) and will invite everybody to update it as fit - and then to use it for sending a brief report. [opensuse-marketing] Help wanted... Marketing / Ambassadors

Hi all, I'm going to share an idea and would love to work a bit on this. It's almost the end of August and School will start soon. If you look into a High School, you will find already some enthusiasts, some people which are curious and eventually a lot of potential future professionals and contributors. I believe it is important to start building a presence amongst this teenagers and establish a bond with them. We are talking of people from 15 to 18 years old (based on the Portuguese Educational System). Many of this students already have some interest in coding, networking and other aspects and I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of them has already heard about GNU/Linux and Free Software. In fact most of them probably have a laptop sponsored by the governament with dual boot, featuring Caixa Mágica (Mandriva based Portuguese Linux distribution; it started actually as being based on SuSE Linux). I have some connection I can explore, within the City Hall and also the Director of the local high school is someone I know very well (she was my teacher and we both shared some initiatives in the past). I also know Pedro Piedade, which I believe it is still the coordinator for IT and IT teacher there. I know is all fond of Ubuntu and stuff, but it doesn't matter. If there is possibility of me, or anyone else, or even me and other volunteer to give them a small 10 hour crash course on how to jump into openSUSE and explore possibilities with a group of students... Would anyone be interested in developing the contents for a 10 hour event with students ? Has someone done this before or has anything we can use? Anyone can share some experiences on this field ? Would you mind that I would make this happen around openSUSE ? Going further into this and supposing it does happen... We need to take some info out of it... in a way, we need to look into a process that we can evaluate the initiative and gather some feedback. I can make and hand over some questionnaires... This is actually far easier than a market study... but this wouldn't probably be much in the way of 'open source' as the whole process would be depending on me and most likely people wouldn't be able to follow it, just read a report provided by me, which doesn't help. Thinking on the future, since it has been developed it should also be available for anyone else who wants to try it out or who conducts a similar event. In this case and also using something openSUSE has done in the past, we could probably use LimeSurvey to build the questionaire and then present the results to the community. This results may be used later to improve. What would be the steps that one would take inside the openSUSE community to prepare a crash program to present to 'new users' on openSUSE. How would we split the topics and fit them... for example: - 1 theoretical group -- The open source vision -- Value and Deployment -- The openSUSE values and Community -- the openSUSE resources to the community -- Ramp into openSUSE enrollment - 1 practical group -- Installing openSUSE Linux -- Configuration openSUSE Linux / YaST -- Repository management / info -- Software Groups -- Basic Service Configuration (popular stuff: apache, mysql, postfix, etc) I might be forgetting things that are important, but this is pretty much a mockup of a potential 'service plan'. Where physically can we develop such document and such concept so that we can provide it to anyone who wants to make small field initiatives. If this is developed correctly we can have a good thing here. For example Fedora does this on a more specific conditions, but their enrollment with the Allegeny University has been pretty much a success, and a lot of stuff was created by their students to Fedora 13 in terms of contents. This is not a copy-cat initiative though. This should be a part of a possible 'Ambassador cook book'. This is just a concept which I am ready to help develop and document for later application. I can also run a test pilot on the field on the local high school or through the City Hall which far more resources. [opensuse-marketing] Conferences

Hi all, I'm working on a list with conferences through the year. This list has a few goals: - I can plan my travel ;-) - we can all plan where to go to and what to organize where For example, it'd be cool to have openSUSE side meetings at more conferences. For the Ambassadors, for example, but also just focused on visitors with workshops and such. I've put the list up on google docs as that's the easiest way (afaik) to work on it together. Yes, I can put it in a wiki, but no two peeps can work on it at the same time and it's also quite a bit more complicated. Once it is done we can put it somewhere better. So I'd like to ask those of you who've been to conferences in the past to go look in the doc, see if your conference(s) is (are) there and add info. How many peeps go there, what's the audience etc. Don't spend too much time on it, just add details on the conferences YOU have visited - that won't be hard. I'd greatly appreciate input! Hello ! The next weekend, september 4th and 5th 2010, I participate to a special event in my city, the Lille Fleamarket (Braderie de Lille), 3 million visitors ! With my LUG chtinux and several associations we have create a place to promote the free culture (in french : http://www.chtinux.org/village_libre_bradrie_2010 ). Could you send us some dvd or livecd and maybe goodies for have a stand, and speak about OpenSUSE. I sent an email to Andreas Jaeger to become ambassador. I introduce myself : My real name is Timothée BRIOLET, I'm 24 years old. I'm mechanical design researcher in french scientific university. So I'm not a computer programmer, but I use intensively Linux for 5 years. I'm implicate in my french regional LUG Chtinux http://www.chtinux.org/, in several events I promote OpenSUSE and spread the ideas of free softwares.
