Can this be true? If so, why? Zypper won't let me upgrade acpid without breakage unless systemd is installed too. [opensuse-factory] KDE menus and gitorious

I created a merge request for desktop-data three weeks ago. It's just a minor patch that doesn't really fix anything but a warning from kbuildsycoca4. I'm not sure about how Gitorious works, maintainers are supposed to notice the "1" in the merge requests section or they receive an email notifying it? And since I'm on it. Since I updated my 11.3 system to KDE to 4.5 the "inline" part of the menu is not honored... Expected behavior? [opensuse-factory] Lilypond won't work with guile 2.0, What can I do to prevent it being dropped? Do we really want guile 2.0 yet?

OpenSUSE has jumped way ahead of all the other major distributions by pushing guile-2.0 to factory, this may cause problems for packages such as gnucash if it uses guile to the extent that lilypond does. Lilypond uses guile extensively and are working on porting lily to guile 2.0 but this is their timeline quoted from one of my emails from Graham Percival to the devel list please note that lilypond 2.16.0 may not be released before openSUSE 12.1 and I'm working on 2.14.2 atm the current release : There is absolutely zero chance of lilypond 2.16 using guile 2.0. There is maybe a 10% chance that any version of lilypond will support guile 2.0 in 2011. Total guesswork for future predictions: 50% chance of supporting guile 2.0 before July 2012, 80% chance of support guile 2.0 before the end of 2012. What that means for opensuse is up to you. If you particularly want guile 2.0, then by all means jump in; the more people working on it, the higher the chances are that it'll get done sooner. But based on the amount of work that currently goes into guile 2.0, those are my estimates. Cheers, - Graham and I think this is also relevant, another lily developers reply from the same message: Given that the upcoming ubuntu oneiric apparently does not include guile 2.0, I also don't see a switch to guile 2.0 in the near future. I suppose that we should ask the ubuntu people when they'll finally package guile 2.0. Cheers, Reinhold I've looked at parallel installation of guile 1.8.8 (we jumped from 1.8.7 to 2.0.1) and it doesn't look easy otherwise I would have submitted guile1 but I'm still working on it although I'm not that familiar with the autoconf/automake build system at this level. What this means for openSUSE, lilypond is a very popular musical notation type setting program, the developers pride themselves in the accuracy of the notation positions, it is also used, for musical notation by rosegarden, a popular music and midi composition program. Both of these applications have no substitutes in the open source world and only have costly equivalents in the ms windows world, neither being available for ms windows although there are requests to port for both this won't happen in the immediate future. Rosegarden can work without lilypond as it is only bound to lilyponds notation fonts but the sheet music it exports will be useless so it will lose major functionality. Lilypond won't even be able to be installed via tarball on openSUSE 12.1 without the user removing guile 2.0 completely and installing guile 1.8 via tarball, as a result these users of lilypond and rosegarden will drop openSUSE. I started as a community maintainer by saving both lilypond and rosegarden from being dropped, I'm now very active in maintaining multimedia apps and libs and losing these programs will mean losing a large section of professionals in music related professions that have migrated from the windows world including the people that I've converted from ms windows just by showing them rosegarden although ms's change from xp to vista also helped. For the other packages that directly depend on guile : guile aisleriot gnucash autogen and slib, the change back to guile-1.8.8 won't AFAICS have any negative effects, all of these packages simply have patches for guile 2.0 and after looking at the patches, will most probably build with the patches still in place. I don't know what the situation is with guile users but it is an app for use by apps and not a direct users app. Guile-1.8.7 builds for factory, guile-1.8.7 doesn't build for 11.4. What are we going to do? Drop lilypond, I will keep it alive in home:plater:lilypond with guile-1.8.8 to replace guile-2.0.2 or revert to guile-1.8.8 in line with the other linux distributions? If i start emacs (or pidgin) i get the following error: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_datalist_get_data Am i missing some library? Is this a packaging error? Hi, There are some things we need to get done before we can call Milestone 6 Beta: - kpat is 4.7.0 - 11.4 artwork needs to go. Unless of course the artwork says this will stay for the final. - systemd still has several issues on the live cd and first boot after installation - there are still 22 build failures in openSUSE:Factory:Staging:DtNeeded, we'll revert the patch in binutils I guess. - we have no kernel-xen - several kmps do not build: ndiswrapper, omnibook, vmpware-guest, xen, xtables-addons This is just what came to my mind, I bet there is more if you start looking into bugzilla. [opensuse-factory] Update frequency of the openSUSE:Factory snapshot repo

In the past the snapshot repo was created (AFAIK) to reduce the number of rebuilds triggered by changes in the Factory/standard repo. However this is no longer the case. The snapshot repo seems to be updated as soon as that the Factory/standard repo is being published and this causes an big number of rebuilds. Of course this is the way that things should work, but I wonder if it is really necessary to have the snapshot repo updated at least once a day (if not twice a day). This is causing that repo's that are building against it to be triggered for a full rebuild again and bigger repo's will just keep on building and building, without ever really coming to the point to be published. My question now is if we can lower the frequency of updating the snapshot repo (and give somewhat more peace to OBS) or is there a way to setup a repository to ignore those snapshot updates ? Hi, opensuse 11.4 is getting to be a few cmake versions behind (2.8.3) and my workarounds are growing for modules that have fixes upstream. How about updating what's in, at least, tumbleweed? I'd be glad if it got put into 11.4 updates but tumbleweed is a great start. I found a build laying around in the tools:building repository but yet another repository is undesirable, especially since I maintain alot of build machines at my workplace. Thoughts? [opensuse-factory] openSUSE Factory on ARM is alive!

Hi, This week, a group of Hack week participants have sat together and bootstrapped openSUSE Factory for ARM, namely for armv5tel (soft floating point with thumbs) and for armv7hl (hard floating point with aapcs-linux ABI). This seems to be the common cross-distro standard, the recent Fedora15 porting activities also targetted armv7hl. The status is at the moment: - We have at the moment over 1700 packages succeeded. A test on real hardware shows that the packages are running fine. Many more packages should come over the next few hours, as low-level dependencies are finally building and now will enable the build of the rest of the distro. - We have one hard issue: gcc 4.6 seems to miscompile on armv5tel something that causes the rpm database to corrupt very quickly, which means that no packages can build in a regular chroot, which sets up the rpm database but corrupts it, so the rpmbuild then fails. As a workaround, we're building armv5tel with gcc 4.4, which works fine. Thiis is not a permanent solution yet, we need to find the actual problem. - We have a few failures in packages. Looking at them, most of them are caused by threading issues (e.g. failing testsuites), because building under usermode qemu does not have a good thread emulation, and it often fails or simply crashes. This seems to be a hard issue, we can only solve that by building either in system qemu (which seems to be too slow to use) or by building with real hardware. We currently plan to use real hardware. At the moment, problematic parts can be disabled with a %if !%qemu_user_space_build ... %endif section. Everyone is invited to take a look at the failures and help fixing them. building packages locally is easy, if you have "qemu" installed. we recommend to use the qemu from openSUSE:Tools:Unstable, as it has a couple of fixes we noticed that we need for proper building. [opensuse-factory] Growing some openSUSE ARMs

Sorry for the cross posting, but I thought it worth the extra noise ;-) One of the things that came out of the recent Geeko Love-In for me was a new project to immerse myself in within openSUSE. Yeah I know, we have enough existing projects already so why create a new one? Simples! Believe it or not but openSUSE is behind the curve in a specific segment, and that segment has yet to explode to its full potential. That segment is ARM. No I'm not talking about your upper body appendages, but the architecture that powers most of your little devices (and some bigger ones too). Almost all smartphones, tablets and many other consumer devices are powered by ARM from one of the numerous licensees. Didn't openSUSE do something about this a while ago? Yes we did. Unfortunately the effort seems to have bitrotted somewhat, there were numerous reasons and I don't even prophesise to know the all either. As such I'm going to try and kickstart things, and see it through and hopefully see it grow. As I mentioned, this idea came up at the conference when I was talking to numerous people (I forget how it all started, but that doesn't really matter). There was an overwhelmingly positive view on the matter, and that for me was all that counts. Now let me be crystal clear here, *THIS WILL NOT BE A ONE MAN SHOW!!* I mentioned previously that my view is that we as a community are pretty lazy at times with getting our hands dirty. As such if you think things are going slow or not going in the direction you would like, don't moan. Get your hands dirty and help make a difference. The process will not be an easy one either, so don't expect a port to magically appear over night. If we're lucky we might be able to have a working port in 6 months. Maybe longer, maybe shorter; ultimately that lies with us as a community. Stage one has begun already thanks to Adrian Schroeter, Alex Graf and Dirk Mueller. Stage one comprises of getting the boot strap process to work. At a cursory level this means getting the packages required for setting up a build chroot environment and for building these packages on the target ARM architecture. This will possibly take a fair amount of time, and no I won't give any timelines for this - how long is a piece of string? openSUSE has a couple of advantages here, 1) we have the OBS which can cross build and if need be cross compile packages for numerous architectures (ARM included) so we are going to make a start with that; 2) SUSE are going to be doing another HackWeek (I think it is next week) which means Adrian, Alex, Dirk and anyone else that has knowledge, experience or interest can join in the fun and pain almost full time for a week - let's not kid ourselves here there is a high probability for lots of pain, but also fun ;-) Thing is HackWeek is not just for SUSE staff, it is also for the community. You can join in and spend some quality time on the project with those that know a whole heap of stuff, and learn from them and maybe even teach them something too. We are going to be targeting ARMv7 nothing older I'm afraid this means CORTEX-A8 and above (looking at A9 primarily and then the new A15 when it's available), it gets too messy otherwise and it is already messy enough.If you have knowledge and experience, please help out. If you don't take part you have no justification to complain - you've got to be in it to win it ;-) So I'm basically just giving you all a heads up on this effort, and will update you as regularly as possible (I'm hoping to do something weekly maybe). In the meantime, if you're interested join #opensuse-arm on Freenode and the opensuse-arm mailing list. *DO NOT HARRASS* for updates, if there is something to say it will be said. If you've got a question, ask and *WAIT* for an answer. If you want to help out but want to know how ask and *WAIT* for an answer. The new branding is in the factory and looks cool... great work! Now the things I found up to now 1. kdm login screen and kspashx on my desktop 1920x1080 seem to use different resolution backgrounds. the geeko changes slightly the position from kdm to ksplash. this may be tough to fix, iirc ksplash is picky about what resolutions it takes... kdm is not. 2. the susegreeter still has the old branding... and it seems the new branding was not commited in git. 3. the sysinfo uses the old branding. this is the offending file... /usr/share/kde4/apps/sysinfo/about/images/background.png I did not manage to see where is taken from ye. Moreover... when in full-screen the background does not expand all over the window width. see picture. http://paste.opensuse.org/23951090 4. for factory versions... should we use for kde kickoff as start the factory geeko instead of the green one? moving to the green one once in rc or gm state? Any future 4.1 releases will have a modified version notifier on non-Oracle builds which advise the user that if their distribution/distributor no longer provides current versions of the Additions they should remove the distribution version and install ours. Distributors should feel free to customise the message. And we have also fixed the only problem we could find which would cause problems when 4.1 Additions were used with a 4.0 host - the Guest Execution functionality was not working in this case. The 3D ABI is compatible between 4.0 and 4.1, and we will try our best not to keep it compatible in future. So as of any future 4.1 or later releases it will be safe for distributions to supply the most recent version of the Additions for use with any host version as of 4.0. (Just in case there is any doubt, we will only be testing this for Linux guests, although chances are good that it will apply for other guests too.) When to announce publically I leave to the marketing guys, I'll be mainly off the internet till tuesday as monday is public holiday for me and I'm told publishing news on friday is bad - but I'll make sure the ISOs are available for interested testers. I hope that's ok for the team. Now the interesting question is what about the RC1. We didn't really loose time in development as we checked in almost everything that came in during the time we waited for the fixes - this includes e.g. kernel 3.1rc7. But we can't hold the schedule as it is - the original deadline for RC1 checkins is october 7th - that's around 4 days after public announcment of the beta and even before the pizza party. With the new factory work flow we have some more flexibility in terms of checkin deadlines, so let's make use of that. My proposal would be: Move RC1 from October 13th to 21st for release date - checkin deadline would be 18th. Move RC2 from October 27th to November 3th - checkin deadline would be October 28th (November 1st and the monday in front are blackout in Nuremberg and we rely too much on Nuremberg to move the date where it's perfect ;( ) Move Final release from November 11th (who set that date anyway? :) to November 16th. GM would be on 11th. Note, that I don't want to move the final date too much and if we all agree to some discipline, RC2 will already be perfect and we only apply some polishing up to GM. I know that shuffles our usual weekdays for release a bit and I'm pretty sure I made some mistakes in my proposal, so please feel free to give ideas of yours. After changing the oss and non-oss repository of my openSUSE 12.1 M5 system to the factory ones, running "zypper up", and a reboot, kdm does not start anymore (there are no other repositories activated). Or rather it starts but it produces the error messages "X server died during startup" and "X server for display :0 cannot be started, session disabled". Any workaround? nomodeset does not change anything, nor does SystemV or systemd. -- fr.gr. Just submitted * 85410: conky from server:monitoring * 85411: tolua++ from devel:languages:lua Note that tolua++ is only needed at build time, it's kind of a swig for lua bindings, and used by conky for the imlib2 and cairo backends. It is not required at runtime at all. Conky is a lightweight resource monitor that sits on the root of an X window. It monitors stuff such as remote servers, temperature, disk capacity, mailboxes, etc etc... It is very widely used on all distributions. (Kinda surprising it wasn't in factory) Tolua++ is a development tool that generates glorified Lua bindings for C and C++ libraries. Conky is stated to be licensed under the GPL on the project website, but it uses some bits from other projects and is hence a mix of GPL v3+, BSD (revised) and MIT. Tolua++ is licensed under the MIT license. Conky is actively developed and has releases on a regular basis, although not too frequent (latest is 1.8.1 and from 2010-10-05). Tolua++ seems barely maintained and only had few releases (it is a fork of another project though, "tolua"), last release being in Feb 2009: http://www.codenix.com/~tolua/ Not quite critical though, as it only generates code. We need badly some page aimed to the simple user (here any administrator, even with few knowledge), let alone with 10 lines description and usefull links links. Fedora have a beginning (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/systemd - not that good) What we need is a HOWTO, showing to somebody that used system V inits before how he can do now. Hi all, It looks like i'm caught in a transition gap: With my very old box, i use misdn + asterisk1.2. Now, i want to move to another box, and heard that asterisk18 doesnot work wel with misdn1, while misdn2 is still work-in-progress. On the asterisk-list, somebody quoted: "And since Dahdi supports the important BRI card based on HFC-8S/4S colonge chip and via http://code.google.com/p/zaphfc/ also the cheap HFC-S cards. No reason anymore to use mISDN." But as far as i can see, this code is not on the OBS, not even in somebodies home directory. Could it be somewhere included? Like ../repo/network:/telephony:/asterisk/openSUSE_11.4/ or ../repo/home:/vitsoft:/asterisk-dahdi/openSUSE_11.4/ afaicr, ISDN with HFC-S was quite popular in (atleast) DE and NL. When I use 'zypper up' on Factory, I get a long list of LibreOffice components that are listed as not being updated. When I used YaST to determine why, it says "nothing provides libreoffice-icon-themes = 3.4.2.6 needed by libreoffice-3.4.2.6-1.1.x86_64". I have not tested on i686 to see if this only affects 64-bit systems. When trying to rename package sim to kde3-sim I facted the following legal problem: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=719081 === The spec file of kde3-sim and most of the licenses in the package state that the package is licensed under the GPL-2.0+. However, a single file (with header): sim/qjpegio.cpp is licensed under an old version of QT license. It offers a choice of either (1) a commercial license, (2) QPL or (3) GPL-2.0 ("only"). As we must choose choice (3) this will mean that a resulting derived work of qjpegio.cpp and the other GPL-2.0+ files in the package will need to be licensed under the GPL-2.0 "only". Thus, the spec file license should read (with comment): # the GPL-2.0 license of qjpegio.cpp may cause the entire package to be licensed # under GPL-2.0 License: GPL-2.0 There is, however, a second problem. The file plugins/yahoo/sha.c is licensed under the MPL-1.1. That license is incompatible with the GPL-2.0. So we need to determine: (1) if that file is actually used at all (2) if it is used, is it compiled/linked with GPL licensed code (3) if it is (and a derived work may have been created) upstream will need to be contacted to resolve this (4) Failing (3), it may be possible to substitute the MPL sha.c code with a functionally equivalent GPL compatible version === For now I removed the Yahoo plugin entirely. After my yeasterday zypper dup (with only minor libreoffice problems), I don't have anymore a full screen display. Hi, at the moment we seem to have the following mysql flavors in Factory: mysql-community-server mysql-cluster mariadb There might be more that I don't know about. Given that mysql is a package that needs frequent updating (both for security and for non-security bugfix reasons); I was wondering if it really makes sense to have multiple flavors of it in Factory (and thereby in openSUSE 12.1). We did so in the past for 11.3 and 11.4, and noticed that this was a problem (security updates took look to be submitted, and then they had major regressions that broke severly). So, my question is twofold: - is there anyone stepping up to maintain mariadb and mysql-cluster for the full openSUSE lifetime? - if no, who would object (and why) to dropping those variants from factory? Note that the other flavors can still be in server:database, even built for older distros, so those who really want it can use it. Hi, my sr of X11:xfce/lightdm-branding-openSUSE to Factory has been rejected on the grounds that it doesn't provide a copy of the GPL (see bnc#716059) although in fact it does include a copy from the main lightdm package. I haven't been able to get any response from the legal team either through bugzilla or via mail, could somebody please comment on this? I need to get this into Factory ASAP. [opensuse-factory] Kernel for 11.4?

Factory is currently using 2.6.36 which was released 3 weeks ago. Upstream versions tend to take about 10-11 weeks, on average, to release. The scheduled release for the first openSUSE RC is Jan 20. The scheduled release for the first RC is Jan 20. The typical development time for a kernel release, on average, is about 10-11 weeks. That puts the release of 2.6.37 around Dec 29 to Jan 12. That sounds like kind of a tight window, but the reality is that the differences in the later kernel RCs tend to be small and fix bugs. The "real" development happens in -rc1, which was released about two weeks ago. Later -rcs serve to stabilize the development that went into -rc1. So, the the feature freeze aspect of it will be a one-shot, when I update to -rc1. (Actually, I hardly ever update to -rc1 and instead use - -rc2 which tends to be more stable). I've already done the merge work for 2.6.37-rc1 since the master kernel always tracks the latest upstream. Xen is the lone exception, as it usually is, but Jan Beulich has been great about getting that completed shortly after I do the update. This time might be a little more difficult because much of the Xen code has been merged into the mainline kernel so there's some sorting out to be done. As far as testing goes, we're still early enough that we won't lose a lot of effort. I'd update Factory to 2.6.37-rc2 as soon as it is released upstream, which should be this week. Our usual corps of dedicated testers can dig in quickly. In my experience, though, the number of testers drastically increases around the RC1 release. I wish it weren't so, but it is. So revving the kernel now isn't likely to toss out a lot of testing. The biggest "feature" I'm going for is not having to backport fixes from 2.6.37. The BKL removal patches and the VFS scalability patches are going to improve performance on multicore systems. The removal of I/O barriers should also be pretty noticeable but I haven't had time to verify that yet. I've been preparing a package of python-ipaddr in OBS[0] The library is a dependency of another project I'm trying to package, and since it's a general enough library I thought I might submit it. It's very useful when working extensively with IP addresses, since it provides lots of stuff python's stdlib doesn't. I tried to follow all the guidelines for python packaging, I tried the package in my own 11.4 and it works Ok. The only thing that makes me doubt is the requirement for a CLA[1] in order to submit patches upstream. How does the community deal with this? If the CLA is no issue, I'll try to submit the package to factory before the next milestone. Why start with a distro that is already based on "old" hardware. Nearly all tablets are using a Cortex A9 (mostly in the form of a Tegra 2). That has one small downside. This one doesn't have a NEON FPU at least not one that meets the full specs. What are the plans for a openSuSE ARM distro. Where should it run on? I received numerous bugreports regarding KDE3 packages from the legal team. It is very strange given that the packages are essentially the same as were packaged in openSUSE previously. Due to a number of interdependancies on packages that are not ready for Tumbleweed, and other interactions with the system that are causing problems for some users, I'm going to remove systemd from Tumbleweed today to allow the developers to spend more time on getting it stable for Factory and 12.1 instead of having to chase down problems that are specific to Tumbleweed only. Drivers like gspcav1 do not build on 11.x and rpm -ql kernel-desktop | grep gspca Tells me they seem to be now included in the kernel. Hello, AppArmor 2.7 (beta1) is in Factory since some hours. Short version: please test it and report any problems you notice. Long version: I'm quite new in maintaining the AppArmor package (I became maintainer last saturday ;-) Additionally, I dropped a 380k patch that changed the whole upstream buildsystem to use automake [1]. In other words: the whole build process of the AppArmor package is totally new, and it might be that this introduced some regression I didn't notice yet. A known "regression" is that the tomcat_apparmor package is no longer built - it is unmaintained upstream since quite some time and failed to build. If anyone needs this, please step up and help maintaining it ;-) Please test if the AppArmor 2.7 beta1 package works as expected on your system - if not, please reply to this mail or open a bugreport. (Success reports are also welcome, of course.) If you don't have a Factory installation available, you can also download packages for 11.3 and 11.4 from security:apparmor:factory. In theory, they should work on those systems without changing the kernel side, but I can't promise that ;-) (they seem to work on my 11.4 system) Finally: thanks to everybody who helped me to get the AppArmor package updated by personal support on the conference and online support on IRC. rpmlint complains, appropriately, when the package group does not belong to a list of approved groups. I did a clean install today of factory and during first boot up I get a fsck error. A screenshot is attached, but it you can't open it, the gist of the error is that fsck can't find fsck.btrfs and puts my btrfs partition to read only. I am given the option of mounting my root partition myself, but this quietly fails. Anybody know what's up? Thanks, Steve

Hello, Is it the intended behavior? When I install factory, sysvinit is used on the running system. But as soon as I reboot it, systemd is used... Holla! I realized I cannot feel comfortable with a mercurial as git user. It is supposed to be git-like distribute vcs, but the amount of differences is too much. Some of them are easy to handle git format-patch HEAD~ vs hg log -r tip > name.patch But sometimes it's very suprising for me. For example when I learned about a fact, that local branches are not supported by default http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/Branch http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/LocalBranches http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/LocalbranchExtension or you cannot easy delete your topic named branch you made and did not publish http://mercurial.selenic.com/wiki/PruningDeadBranches And that confusion exceeded my born lazyness. So behold devel:tools:scm/hg-fast-export which I already submitted into Factory (request 82210). I "stole" some usefull things like manual pages and git-hg script from Debian, so it's really simple to use git-hg clone <mercurial-repository-url> and continue by man git-hg. I found, by analysing a not properly working /etc/init.d/amavis script that the utilty checkproc returns different return codes compared to this utility in openSUSE 11.4. Hello all VMware-Workstation-Full-8 came out this week so I downloaded an evaluation version and installed it on a fresh install of openSUSE-DVD-Build0250-x86_64 (M5 with all the updates). Once the installation of VMware-Workstation 8 finished I re booted openSUSE 12.1 and copied and unzipped a backup of an existing WinXP VMware machine I then started VMware-Workstation 8 and added the evaluation key. I have been testing 3.0.4 with Tumbleweed, and noticed that after a suspend to ram cycle, the NIC would come back online with only 10Mbit speeds for my GigE network. I'd like to include Pymol and one of its dependencies, python-pmw in Factory. They are both currently in devel:languages:python Pymol is one of the leading programs for visualization of proteins. It has an active user community developing scripts for its python api (see http://pymolwiki.org/index.php/Category:Script_Library ), and an active upstream in the form of Schrodinger, a leading molecular modeling software company. Schrodinger sells a commercial product with extra features to the open source product, but they continue to release features and fixes to the open source version as well. This would come together with updates for the Rasqal and Redland libraries and both of them would depend on the new Raptor2 package. The Raptor2 package is a major update from the Raptor package and include many cleanups and changes (including API changes). Both packages can be co-existent on a system (except for the man-pages) I know that the Soprano package (KDE's Nepomuk) is depending on these libraries, but please let me know if there are any other packages that should be evaluated before I push these changes to Factory. Guess what is causing the sound not to work while amarok is running. The latest version of 12.1 M5 will only play one audio source at a time. The last version would play amarok or tvtime and a flash file at the same time. All, I just noticed how out of date e2fsprogs is in factory. We have 1.41.11. 1.41.14 came out about a year ago and apparently there have been further hundreds of commits since then. In the last couple days, the e2fsprogs maintainers (Ted Tso and Eric Sandeen) have said they are trying to get a new update of e2fsprogs released in the short term (1.42 I assume) with hopes of it going into Fedora 17. If 1.42 is released in the next few weeks, is that likely to get into 12.1? (Fedora Rawhide has been running a unofficial snapshot of 1.41.14 + what's in git since July so it has gotten testing there.) If 1.42 is considered too new, can we get 1.41.14 at least? Hello everyone, sr#81625 want's to add 'sword', a bible study tool to openSUSE:Factory. While that is totally fine, the spec file %description contains stuff like: +The SWORD Project is an effort to create an ever expanding software package for +research and study of God and His Word. While I don't care much for that particular bedtime story, others may well be offended by biased religious views (even more so if their's differing). Of course, this may equally apply to policitcal views or offensive words. I have the feeling that openSUSE should take neutral stance, be inviting and open for everyone (and we're quite good at that already). But I'm not sure if we should provide a stage for non-technical biased views. Even less so for those with a mission. I faced this issue when making a patch for KDE3 that should detect removable media without hal and which is based on analysis of /proc/self/mounts entries. Thus the mtab backend thinks about USB drives as of hard disks. === It is actually interesting why USB devices are assigned SCSI-names, and should not they receive USB names. When I start the computer connects as a charm but if I suspend it and then unsuspend it will ask me for a password to connect. a policykit question... Any ideas? Although the KMS video drivers have improved a lot, there are still a lot of nVidia adapters for which nouveau fails to provide any useful graphics screens. For new users, the failure to boot to a meaningful display is frustrating. The problem used to affect only persons that had implemented the proprietary closed-source drivers, and their graphics failed when the kernel changed. They could be warned in advance because a lot of them came to the forums for help in getting the propriety driver installed. With KMS, people are having trouble with their initial look at an openSUSE version. I expect many decide that openSUSE is flawed and move on to other distros. I propose two fixes/workarounds: (1) Make the GRUB option "nomodeset" be the default for all installation media. There will be very little impact on the NET install CD or the DVD install disks. The lower graphics performance for the Live CDs will be a small penalty to pay for the benefit of getting a great many more systems to boot. If the "nomodeset" appears after the "VGA=" on the GRUB options line, it will be easy to advise people to try removing it when booting. They will quickly learn if they need it or not. (2) In the installation process for GRUB, detect the presence of an nVidia adapter and pop-up a screen advising the user that the installed system may need the nomodeset option in order to boot. I single out nVidia because nouveau seems to handle many fewer models than the KMS drivers for the others. I don't have any ATI adapters, and the one i915 system I have boots without trouble. One of my nVidia-equipped systems boots to a blank screen with nouveau, and the other corrupts the alternate terminals. I have no doubt that the KMS developers will have drivers that handle nearly all adapters in the near future. As someone having experience with reverse engineering, I'm really impressed with the progress, but kernels 3.0 and 3.1 still need some work. As we can help our users get a more satisfactory experience with quite small changes, I think we should do so. I installed Factory more than a week ago in one of my laptops (T410). I could not get nouveau or the proprietary nvidia driver to work, until I found some posts pointing to home:/jobermayr/ which made nouveau work. The proprietary driver still gives a black screen (I updated X11:Driver:Video to 280.13 even). Later Factory had more updates, including nouveau, I updated, and everything was broken again. So home:/jobermayr is still required and I have to lock them or reinstall them after a dup. (why are those fixes not integrated? will they?) On my workstation, not even with home:/jobermayr I can get a working GNOME3. Both nouveau and proprietary driver (280.13) work only in fallback mode. I tried a Fedora Alpha LiveCD today, and it graphics worked out of the box on the workstation. x11 nouveau is 8378443 kernel 3.0.0 mesa dri drivers: 7.11-0.16 20110620 So what is causing all this mess? kernel? nouveau-x11? Mesa? What is the plan with jobermayr fixes? I updated the proprietary driver .spec files to use 280.13 (just a sed op). Are those changes wanted or are those kept up with an older version for a reason? Factory team just rejected the ezcomponents-* packages which I submitted to factory because I needed them as a dependency for phpunit. I looked at them and I am about to drop them from server:php:applications too. These packages are in a bad shape- each of them seems to consist of the complete ezcomponents framework. I will set up a bare minimum of ezcomponents pear packages which is sufficient to run phpunit. So, it's easy to track my computer... So, my proposal is to do the following two changes: * Use 2 instead of 1 in /etc/rc.d/boot.ipconfig for enabling the privacy extensions * Set IPV6_PRIVACY=yes in /etc/sysconfig/sysctl Any concerns with this change? [opensuse-factory] canonical way for mysql database creation?

Hi list, is there a canonical way to provide easy setup for application databases say in mysql? I have invested some time into a suse-centric commandline installer for horde 4 and it works sufficiently well to be included with the distribution soon but it only works if the user already created a database and a users. Before I go ahead and reinvent the wheel, how would yast or KDE or whoever uses databases as backends do it? Hi, xorg-x11-server in Factory is still at 1.9.3 release ; however latest stable release is in 1.10.x branch.... As feature freeze is 2 weeks away, and as an xorg update is not trivial, does that mean that openSUSE 12.1 will keep a 11 months old xorg server in november ? I'm encountering issue with obsolete GL_PROTO extension when trying to compile Mesa from master because of that. I've just installed 12.1M5 on a plain HP Compaq office machine - after logging in (KDE), and swapping to virtual console 1, I see a slew (maybe 50) of message "FIBMAP: Invalid argument". Second, a little later I see a pile of messages from "modem-manager" about plugins being loaded. Hello, I check in the moment a EFI installation and I found that YaST2 don't let me create a bigger Partition than 156 MB (M5)? In my understanding, for Update elilo to grub2-efi, I must have a bigger Partition? I don't found any, by my search over EFI, that this partition must be 156 MB? The next question is, have any installed (tested) EFI with a existing Win 7 EFI installation? a Friend have a Intel DX58SO2 with EFI Win 7 Installation and he await eagerly the 12.1 is finish ;) The Intel Bios from the DX58SO2 have no EFI Boot menu, so I hope this is working withe grub2-efi? -- mit freundlichen Grüßen / best Regards, Günther J. [opensuse-factory] Testing: DVD vs. CD and kernel 3.0

I vaguely remember saying I would do some testing, but as I need my computers to be functional and they are too weak to run a VM this hadn't come to fruition; until now. I was checking out Mandriva, and though it had a lot of promise it sucked in critical ways... thus I had to reinstall. For some reason all I had was a CD ISO of openSUSE. Which was fine since I wanted to get some fresh notes between the discrepancies of the DVD and CD installs. In the course of the first reinstall I decided to try Kernel 3.0 since the reviews were positive enough for me to feel safe To keep it simple here is a list, plus I'm a little drunk. KPackageKit/Updater Does not work in DVD install (at all), works perfectly in CD install(everything). NetworkManager DVD install ye olde KNetworkManager, CD installs Plasmoid. I remember from before there being discrepancies in the behavior of samba betweenst the two. As I have no systems on the network that are able to communicate in that fashion anymore, I cannot pinpoint these. I did however get some help from a fellow on IRC for getting samba to work between openSUSE and my roomies Mac. He was very helpful, I would recommend somebody trying to get some feedback from him on samba. He is "kukks" on IRC. **** **** **** My experience with Kernel 3.0 was fairly positive. Power consumption was down, heat was down, noise was down. Speed slightly up. Weird 30 second countdown in the boot, "connecting." Only managed to load RPM NVidia driver once. I found no application anomalies with using that kernel. I hear there are some vicious problems with the Sandy Bridge architectures, and would recommend adding some sort of release notes to the SUSE welcomer thingy that pops up after a fresh install. I attempted Tumbleweed and got alot of strange errors in the boot process, but since I was having trouble getting to a graphical interface to begin with (thanks to removing the Nouveau driver) I could not be sure if they were critical. Some miscellaneous notes: It seems the brcm80211 driver has come a long way, since it isn't causing any kernel panics anymore. However, it behaved typically off the LiveCD... but after installed behaves superior to the WL driver. This could be due to upgraded kernel (I don't think so) or because its pulling configuration from the unformatted /home partition. I must make note, that whatever the reason it works correctly it is faster by a wide margin to connect to the WIFI. Nouveau is much much better. I imagine that in a years time I may no longer bother to install the proprietary driver. I have discovered some boot arguments that make my netbook run cooler, and the reports all over the web are similar. acpi_osi=Windows or Linux have a cooling effect... they seem to both be equal. There was another one that I was made aware of that I observed no definite effect from; I'll look it up later. I would have suggested that maybe we should include those arguments in future installs, but 3.0 handles power better for the most part (unless you have sandy-bridge) so it may not be relevant anymore. I think this is everything ATM. I will append this if I remember other things. Om namah Shivaaya! [opensuse-factory] systemd and not powering off the system

Hi, Since I switched from sysvinit to systemd on my Factory system, I notice that it fails to power down after a shutdown, while it did that OK before. Now, it just sits there and tells me the system has been halted but leaves it running. Is that a configuration problem or a systemd-related bug? I found none on file in Bugzilla as a dependency of the "systemd by default" bug, so I wanted to ask here if it's just a one-off. (I found a bug for my second problem, which is apache not starting properly, so I won't complain about that here.) I have now enabled systemd more or less successfully in an M5 running in VBox. Some things and probs that I have ran into: This installation runs in Oracle VBox and I'm used to run also their guest additions. So normally always after a kernel installation I run a script of theirs, 'VBoxLinuxAdditions.run' which has always worked. It did now, but not when booted with (F5) systemd. I booted the default way then and this script did its job normally. Taking Notes from Mandriva I recently caught wind that a new version of Mandriva was released. Having checked out the last version on the advice of a good friend, and having been underwhelmed by it I took a look again to see if I could see the magic he spoke of to me. Overall this was indeed a much better release, and were it not for a few show-stopping bugs it may very well have remained on my beloved netbook. One interesting thing of note is that Mandriva has discontinued their multiple versions. They have even abandoned the Gnome environment in favor of KDE. However, their approach was quite unique. Clearly like I had, they too took away some interesting ideas away from Gnome3; and like me were not willing to suffer the bugs. There were a couple interface elements of note. They replaced Kickoff with an interesting full screen ordeal with a document time-line view called SimpleWelcome. Though many don't like the shifting paradigm of including smart phone and tablet interfaces on a desktop, I found its layout mostly comfortable on my tiny netbook. It is very reminiscent of Gnome3. This was part of their new default Plasma panel called RocketBar. The RocketBar is not terribly different from the upstream default, with the exception of SimpleWelcome. I personally did like that their Task Manager was designed so as to only show the application icon, and not a description. As I am fond of docks, I liked this. This is something that should be integrated into the Task Manager as a option. When my friend first told me of Mandriva, he told me that it was all about the eye-candy and polish. This latest release was certainly a good example of that. With a gorgeous new GTK based widget theme, and a simple but elegant set of icons and window decoration Mandriva managed to distinguish itself. But even before that, it is distinguished in its beautiful boot splash, KDM theme, and finally the login splash. Here we can take some pointers seeing as the presentation is encouraging to the new user. They see polish and anticipate a professional distribution. It is of course not a major technological point... but then success rarely comes to the best, but rather to the clever. Now for a brief review of what was under the hood. Mandriva has switched to using systemD, which though not a very obviously faster boot from HD is brilliant when having to boot from Live media. Frankly the prior release of Mandriva was the very very slowest Live boot ever from USB... now it is second in live boot speed only to Fedora. Once again, this may not be critical but it helps. Especially since openSUSE is slow enough when booting from live media as it is, making people think the installer or live boot has frozen. Mandriva also uses the Plymouth splash, which seeing as it resembles the last splash nearly identically I assume it used last time. Since I am unfamiliar with Plymouth vs. Splashy I can only say one should go take a look. There were two show stopping bugs for me, one which we share in some degree. That being the issue with overheating. In Mandriva the overheating was extreme enough to shut my netbook down. From what I understand this is caused by a poor ACPI implementation. One thing that has helped is to add a line pertaining to ACPI into the grub boot options string. We may want to add one of these parameters by default. I apologize for the verbosity of my letter, but considering the number of points I wished to bring up felt it necessary. Hello, I have two factory boot: one with systemd on the kernel command line, and the very same one, but without the option. after a today zypper dup (only complaining about some libreoffice library), the one with systemd option do not find the harddrive so no log), but the version without systemd boots perfectly That said, my /var/log/messages is full of systemd calls! Hi, If you zypper dup your factory installation, don't be suprised if zypper suggests to reinstall your system as 32bit - the current FTP tree has no x86_64 packages that zypper would see. Most likely cause of this is a new kiwi checked in yesterday, so hopefully it's easy enough to fix. Hi, Stephan! We have a kind of problem here. Some changes to desktop-data-openSUSE before 11.4 have made KDE3's kcontrol empty, and this has been reported by all KDE3 users. We have a working solution and it has been included in 11.4 with updates, so it works well now. But a similar patch to Factory has been rejected by Vincent Untz. Hello, I plan to submit PostfixAdmin to Factory. One of its dependencies is the Zend Framework, which requires some more packages. I'd like to ask the maintainers of these packages to submit them to Factory ;-) The dependency tree looks like this: php5-ZendFramework php5-APC php5-pear-phpunit php5-pear-channel-phpunit php5-pear-phpunit-DbUnit php5-pear-phpunit-File_Iterator php5-pear-phpunit-Object_Freezer php5-pecl-memcache @maintainers of these packages: can you please submit them from server:php:extensions and :applications to Factory? (If everything else fails, I can try to maintain them in Factory, however my knownledge of these packages isn't as good as it should be.) Notes: - php5-pear-phpunit requires several php5-pear-* packages, which means the SR will have to wait until those were accepted - php5-ZendFramework submission needs to wait until everything else was accepted Thanks in advance for your help! Hi. I thought about upgrading to Tumbleweed instead of 12.1 in November however according to the Wiki page it does not really work with proprietary NVidia drivers. As I don't need the best performance, I wouldn't mind using the Gallium3D-based Nouveau driver but unless I missed something, nothing Gallium-related is included in the repo. Is there any chance to see Gallium3D drivers included into Tumbleweed in the foreseeable future? So I read on Jos' blog that Bretzn may not be ready for 12.1. The main devs apparently had a call from life they had to take. Is anybody else planning on taking up the development to get this into 12.1? I would like to help if I can. I have knowlege of C++ C, and a little Python. However I have not worked on a project, so my knowledge is limited and abstract. Hey openSuSE; Why is it that all /etc/permission.* are being overlooked or not even loaded? I have to set the sound /dev/dsp, mixer and audio so that amarok and any flash file is allowed to work as a "user" in X. I have set the permission in /etc/group like a good little boy and it still fails. With pluseaudio on it never worked. It is set to off by way of yast2 and hardware. Hi, Since I installed M5, by upgrading through Yast all packages from M3 (which in itself was a fresh install), LibreOffice 3.3 brings X (or KDE, I don't know how to discriminate between those in this issue) to a halt, or to be more precise, it gives no reaction to keyboard pressings or mouse movements (mouse pointer stays put on the screen). Tried it several times, same behavior. Also Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesn't help, so I have to ssh from another machine to reboot the system graciously. In bugzilla, only OpenOffice is available to report bugs about in 12.1, so I report it here. initV or systemd makes no difference in this. Hi all, today I tried to install oS-12.1 (DVD build 250, x86_64) in my laptop in order to check whether a bug is still present (and it is, but probably it is not the same as before). Since I have not a dedicated testing partition, my idea was to install oS12.1 in the /home partition leaving / (with oS 11.4) untouched. Usually I install from hard disk, so I put the iso file in /, copied initrd and linux from iso to /boot, added an entry to GRUB and rebooted the laptop. In this kind of installation the partition containing the iso file can not be modified as well as assigned to some mount point. In the partitioner I found that partition numbers did not agree with the output of fdisk. This is not so problematic since I am able to identify partitions from their size but there is another problem that can be more dangerous: the partitioner wants to delete existing partitions and create them again (with the same size and number); if I remove the "format" flag, I obtain a popup saying that the installation might fail (or something similar) and I have not found a way to avoid partition changes, even in the expert mode. So I aborted the installation (before destroying the content of the disk) and then installed on a pendrive. Is the partitioner's behavior correct? Should I file a bug report? In this case, I will setup a virtual machine for testing. Note that I have not noticed this behavior previously since usually I use /home, that is the last partition on the disk, for the iso file so partition numbers are right. [opensuse-factory] purge-kernels script

Hi All, I have the purge-kernels script activated via the "multiversion-kernels = latest,latest-1,latest-2,running" entry in zypp.conf on four installations of 11.4. Two of them get updated via Tumbleweed, the other two via Factory. The script is removing all older packages on reboot except for two: The kernel-source-* and the kernel-devel-* packages are left on disk and have to be removed by hand. Can anyone confirm this? I've just given systemd a few test runs on an Acer Aspire 1551 netbook. I enabled it by editing the grub boot line each time to say init=/bin/systemd. Here's what I found: - systemd doesn't start X by default, ie. it boots into runlevel 3 or whatever the systemd equivalent is called. I have to use systemctl isolate graphical.target each time. KDE:KDE3 now became so large (currently 440 packages) that it does not get fully rebuilt for Factory between Factory updates. I even cannot see which packages fail to build for Factory. Great job! This ROSA desktop looks superb, really. Please, could you also add Tumbleweed to the repos to compile for? Most OBS projects tend to forget it, and I always end up by cloning the projects I need. Hi: I would like to propose replacing (not removing) the default command line tools for compression, specifically "gzip" for "pigz" and "bzip2" for pbzip2. These tools are backward compatible and have dramatically better performance because they do compression in parallel utilizing current multiple CPU machines. Possible paths to do this a) Simple adding "update-alternatives" support to all the mentioned tools and let the user to decide, however we install pigz and pbzip2 by default. I do not endorse this way. b) Building pigz with executable name "gzip" and rename gzip to gnu-gzip, and bzip2 to bzip2.old or something similar. This is the way endorse c) As these tools are more frecuently used with "tar", make it to prefer the parralel versions, current gnu-tar already tries different implementations when the default ones are not present, would be a matter of altering the order if needed. After installation of openSUSE 12.1 M5 in VirtualBox, which installed the network using the traditional ifup method, only one eth0 interface, I changed the value of BOOTPROTO from dhcp to dhcp4 in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg- eth0, because I don't have a DHCP6 server in the network. This change will not start the DHCP6 client in my system, so the network is started faster. It only waits for DHCP4 to finish. However I do have a IPv6 router in the network, so after some time I should see one or more global IPv6 addresses via stateless autoconfiguration. But they do not appear. The value of /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/eth0/autoconf is 1. -- fr.gr. Hi, I've just been testing factory on an Acer Aspire 1551. This machine has a bcm43225 wifi card. I'm on milestone 5 but so far the kernel doesn't seem to know to automatically load the bcma module. I have to mobprobe bcma every boot (or put it in modprobe.d/ somewhere) otherwise the wireless won't work. Should I raise a bug to get the bcma module loaded for that card by default? What component controls which modules are loaded for which hardware? [opensuse-factory] Cannot boot into graphical session

Hi! After a recent update to openSUSE 11.4 it does not any longer boot into graphical session. What I get is the fsck message that one of the hard drives is busy and cannot be checked and I find myself thrown into filesystem recovery console. The disk then can be checked and seems to work well. I can boot into Xorg by issuing telinit 5 command, but on the next boot I receive just the same error. I also found that even under recovery console if I unmount the hard drive in question, it will becomes mounted again in 5-7 seconds. Up to now, openSUSE users had the choice of using openJDK (GPL with classpath exceptions) or Sun/Oracle's Java. The Sun/Oracle Java was licensed under the "Distributor's License for Java (DLJ)", which allowed Linux distributors to package and redistribute Sun/Oracle Java. Recently, Oracle announced [1] that openJDK 7 is the new official reference implementation for Java SE7. They no longer see the need for the DLJ licensed Java implementation and so have retired that license. openSUSE chooses to proceed with distributing the GPL licensed official reference implementation, openJDK. We will no longer distribute newer versions or updates of the now proprietary licensed Sun/Oracle JDK. Existing installations of the Sun/Oracle JDK are still licensed under the now retired DLJ. openSUSE users who wish to continue using the Sun/Oracle JDK (including new versions thereof and updates) should now download directly from http://www.oracle.com/java. For now we keep the current sun-java packages (under the DLJ license) in the Java:sun:Factory project and will not update them anymore. I suggest to document in the openSUSE wiki how to install the Sun/Oracle JDK version from Oracle under openSUSE. Previously, also in openSUSE 12.1 M3, logging in for the first time in KDE in the user account, one gets a Folder View of the Desktop folder with some basic icons in it, like My Computer. This is no longer the case. Is this intentionally, an issue others have, or is it something only I see? After creation and changing its position, logging out and in again, the position is in the centre of the screen. Putting it in its intended position again, upper left corner, logging off and on, now it remains in that position. Others having the same issue? -- fr.gr. Hey Group after a reload of today after a defective load from zypper. I now have a new a serious problem and that is some piece of software is eating all of my /home space and it seems a be /usr/bin/nepomukserversup that is causing this error on some line number like 185. It was reloaded today for the same problem I spotted yesterday. The home partition was found to be the problem using "df". There is nothing in /var/log/messages, and I found out that syslog daemon is not running. Trying to start it gives this error: /etc/init.d/syslog start returned 5 (program is not installed): I re-installed, no joy. I removed and installed syslog-ng, same result. The strange thing is that this same net-install image installed already another VM without this problem. Installations are completely plain default settings. I work with a small group in my city called the Blood Orange InfoShop (BOIS). I host my Linux Users Group, and Linux workshops at that location. They generally call themselves an Anarchist Collective. They believe in Do It Yourself Culture, thus they hold workshops and discussion groups in order to educate one another and fortify the community. Frankly, its hard to define them since they are simply based abround the idea of community mainly. In any event, they are moving to a larger location soon and want to have a computer lab. We intend to have classes on computer literacy and productivity, Linux and FOSS, and courses on how to participate in open source projects as well as basic programming courses. What has changed the sound. Yast2 Hardware works and KDE4 fails as a user (not tried as root yet). All that is found in Multimedia is that darn "Dummy". Phonon is off and /etc/group has the user on audio.
