During 11.1 devel via https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=397816 I
setup device mapper on one system in order to access all actual partitions
while using ata_piix driver. Now on that system I have a 2.6.29 kernel, so no
longer need dm_linear. So far, I've had no luck reversing the process.
Neither subject command seems to produce any impact. I ran both kpartx -d
/dev/sda and activate_device_mapper -d /dev/sda before running mkinitrd, and
still the resulting initrd features dm_linear and kpartx.
/etc/udev/rules.d/dm_linear.rules did get a fresh write, while
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-kpartx.rules did not. I blacklisted dm_linear & kpartx
in /etc/modprobe.conf.local too, but that didn't help either. Short of a
fresh install, how do I eliminate them, and go back to mounting directly to
/dev/sda* devices instead of /dev/dm-* devices?

I have submited libzypp 6.1.0 to Factory. Which makes aria2c the default
transfer backend for http/ftp.
Read about what this means and some new features here:
http://duncan.mac-vicar.com/blog/archives/507
I wanted to test a little more, but Factory still has 5.11.0 which is
even older than 11.1 updates I think. So be sure to read the post and
learn about ZYPP_ARIA2C=0 in case something breaks or you are hit by any
regression (may be open issues with proxy, ipv6) ;-)
Have fun!

Hello,
PulseAudio has been one of the major sources of complaints and of
problems for both the 11.0 and 11.1 release, with significant annoyances
for openSUSE users, as reported on IRC and on local forums.
As a consequence it is worth to consider the possibility to disable it by
default on freshly installed systems for openSUSE 11.2.
I opened an enhancement request to collect votes and motivations here
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=478511
Please, keep the entry on bugzilla as clean as possible. All the
discussion should be done here on the ML.
To vote, please, don't simply add a "+1", but use the blue button to
cast your votes (up to five per each user) in bugzilla.
Thanks.
With kind regards,
Alberto

Is is intended that the Buildnumber of the isos was reset today ?
The LiveCD was at Build0007 and is now at Build0001 and the NET ISO was at
Build0020 and is now at Build0003.

Just updating factory I noticed that many gnome applications need a lot of
time for running several instances of /usr/bin/gconftool-2 with --makefile-
install-rule or --makefile-uninstall-rule arguments. in their install script.
Compiz installation comsumed over 5 minutes for doing that
Is this expected ?

Is this intended?
This is happening when removing old kernels left by multi-version enabling,
which makes each kernel package (2 or 3 per kernel) removal take an absurd
long time to accomplish. Or, is what looks like mkinitrd in fact
perl-bootloader tripping over a large menu.lst that started with about 9 kernels?

Hello,
I received this email and it would really assist us in our memory foot
print if we could use this version of rpm. It seems we (openSUSE) are
still using 4.4X. See message below.

Subject: [Rpm-maint] RPM 4.7.0 beta1 available
Didn't expect a new version this soon? Frankly, we didn't either :)
In the months that RPM 4.6.0 spent in stabilization phase of numerous release
candidates we had plenty of time to work on new things, and as things have been
fairly stable for a while now, it started looking like a good time to cut out a
release.
By far the most visible improvements over previous versions are in the area of
performace:
- Memory consumption in transactions has been reduced dramatically.
A testcase of "everything install" of Fedora 10 used to top at near
1.5GB memory consumption, now the peak with the same package set
is just over 300MB. Also gone is the quadratic memory consumption on
large number of identical basenames. After the peak during Preparing-stage,
heap consumption drops to mere megabytes during the actual transaction.
- File conflict checking / fingerprinting runs an order of magnitude
faster, especially for upgrades and erasures.
There are of course lots of other improvements and fixes too, for more details
(and download information) see the draft release notes:
http://rpm.org/wiki/Releases/4.7.0
On behalf of the rpm-team,
- Panu -

Hi,
does it make sense to include smbnetfs into openSUSE?

hi there,
i am wondering why i have there kernel rpm packages installed on my
opensuse 11.1 system? i think it used to be only one kernel rpm
package still back in opensuse 11.0
atm i have:
kernel-pae-base-2.6.27.7-9.1
kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.7-9.1
kernel-pae-2.6.27.7-9.1
and i wanted to fool around with kotd a bit.
i suppose i need to look at the "pae" named rpm files in
http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/SLE11_BRANCH/i586/
in what way and in what order do i apply those newer pae rpm packages
from the kotd directory above? its been a while since my last manual
kernel package installations.
is there any current howto or best-practices document about opensuse
kernels as of 11.1 or factory? i dont seem to find any kind of kotd
documentation and i fail to find about the reason and origin why we
are having three kernel packes in 11.1 installed.
thanks for pointers explanations.
