Missing Xen: Maybe this is not the right place, but I really miss Xen on the announced Features and Roadmap for openSUSE 10.2. The "Status of Xen3 on SUSE Linux 10.0", which is the only and latest I still can see, is http://en.opensuse.org/Xen3_Status_and_Updates The last line in that table, "Other Operating System support on top of Xen and VT not tested" is especially of interest to follow up now. XenSource is also just releasing their XenEnterprise with support Linux guest operating systems with Windows support following before the end of 2006 in alignment with the broad availability of Intel and AMD server systems designed to support Xen. XenEnterprise is promises to make it very easy for an organization to install, configure, manage and monitor virtualized Windows and Linux operating systems running across multiple physical servers. What I really wish is that openSUSE 10.2 will offer some smaller "Xen workstation" solution that with YaST tools can ease the installation, configuration and administration of Xen and typical and actual i.e Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP as additional guest operating systems on Intel-VT and AMD-V workstations. If this features is possible to include, I think it will further power openSUSE 10.2 ? Regards, Terje J. Our developers are continuing to improve the package manager stack. We'd like to release some of their changes for 10.1 now and I'd like to ask for testers. Please report all bugs you find in bugzilla (http://bugzilla.novell.com, component libzypp and include in the summary "Package Manager Update 3"). We plan to release on friday, 2006-09-01 an update to the test repository with anything that has been found so far and plan to release the final update next week officially. This update contains the following new features: * support for patch/delta RPMs in YUM sources (#168844) in YOU but not yet in the ZENworks tools This update includes fixes for the following bugs: * various performance enhancements * 190163 - *-kmp-* dependencies match multiple kernel packages * 176568 - Evaluate possible xml parser optimizations * 195567 - 100 /var/tmp/TmpFile.xxxxx in 3 Days * 193584 - cut-off package description in zen-updater * 194424 - Online update setup creates unusable cron job * 191676 - zen installer/updater cannot add an FTP YUM repository * 190295 - zen-updater/zmd/rug does not install update stack patches first * 193212 - zmd does not unblock transactions after transaction preparation failure * 191506 - zen-updated showing updates from non-subscribed catalog * 183656 - mono needed for YaST package management since last update openSUSE 10.2 will see further improvments that need even better testing. If you like to test, please read below the details - otherwise wait for the online update that we will release soon. Until the online update has been installed, I advise to run as root "yast2 online_update" for patch installation. If you have never updated the stack, then use yast to do the following, otherwise use either ZENworks tools or YaST: * Add the following (or one of the mirrors) as installation source: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/10.1-packagemanagement-update-test * Run an online update and install the new libzypp patch * Test whether YOU installs patches using patch/delta RPMs. Note patch and delta RPMs are smaller than full RPMs. Therefore download is faster but assembly of them takes longer. If anything looks broken, please contact myself and Stano <visnov at suse.cz>. Feel free to add him as <visnov at novell.com> in your bugzilla report, so that we do not lose track of any issues with this update. We do not plan to add further fixes, our goal is to get this update out and find any regressions introduced. openSUSE 10.2 will see further improvments that need even better testing and the ongoing progress can be tested using the openSUSE 10.2 Alpha releases - with Alpha4 next week. Michael Löffler is currently on vacation and asked me to discuss the following, it's based on his latest draft. All errors are mine naturally ;-) The upcoming openSUSE 10.2 will basically have similar content like its predecessor but comes of course with latest and stable Open Source packages available at that time. We went through Bugzilla, the feature list and package wishlist and try to accomodate your wishes and suggestions. Note that the list below is neither complete - it's just some of the highlights - nor a commitment. Hi, a very simple question about zypp multiarch handling. How does zypp deal with the following situations: 1) A package is available in the base installation source for both x86_64 and i586, and in the update repo there is just an i586 package. The x86_64 package is currently installed and the i586 package in the update repo has a higher version number. Does it "upgrade" (wrt. the version) resp. "downgrade" (wrt. the architecture)? Or will it keep the installed package? 2) Quite the same as 1), but during a system upgrade: Any differences in this respect between a system upgrade and an online update? Hi, Just to report a successfull network installation of openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 3 (hosted by oss.sgi.com) on my hp workstation zx6000. At the moment, I noticed that there are at least problems with the GNOME settings daemon ( http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-08/msg00563.html) and DRI (not yet reported). Hi, I just finished a fresh network installation of openSUSE 10.2 Alpha 3 on my hp workstation zx6000 (Itanium IA-64 architecture). When I log in a GNOME session, I'm getting a dialog stating that there was an error starting the GNOME settings daemon. This dialog has no window decoration at all. During the same time, the window manager icon is displayed for several minutes in the GNOME splash screen before the starting process and the remaining icons are displayed. I eventually access to a GNOME desktop, but there's no window decoration at all and windows can't thus be moved, resized, etc. I've only found one similar report here www.tuxmachines.org/node/8898 There's nothing similar in bugzilla for the openSUSE 10.2 and OpenSUSE.org products. I've found similar reports on Google for older SuSE distributions: it appears this was due to the language settings. However, changing the language settings to en_US.UTF-8 or even POSIX doesn't help. Is there anybody out there experiencing the same problem? Is this issue specific to Itanium? To 64-bit architectures? I've been following the developemnt of the wireless stack for quite a while now, and wihle it looked like the (Intel based) current ieee stack would be the base for a future unified wireless stack, things have changed significantly and chances are really high that d80211 will be the future - there has even been the discussion on netdev to make the switch as early as 2.6.19 (that's why I wrote "might ... one release early"). So even if it isn't quite ready for prime time now, it looks like it is very close - and if it makes it into a 2.6.19rcX while 10.2 is still in beta, I'd like to see a backport going into the suse 10.2 kernel - that's what I was really aiming at. ciao Joerg -- Joerg Mayer <jmayer(a)loplof.de> We are stuck with technology when what we really want is just stuff that works. [opensuse-factory] Latest Update on factory tree and 10.2 Alpha 3 experience

Hello list, I am closely following the factory tree with my installation (Dell Latitude C640). With the latest update from Aug 26th I hoped, some of the issues I had are solved and finally I can use firefox again which was one of the main issues. But a few other things I am struggling with: a) With rug I get dependendy problems updating cpp41, gcc41, gcc41-c++, gcc41-fortran, gcc41-info,gcc41-objc,libstdc++-41-devel The following things I see since updating to 10.2 alpha versions: b) metacity is not usable as window manager for gnome (I currently switched to icewm), starting it at the command line I get the following: sandmann:/ # metacity --replace Window manager warning: Bad key or directory name: "ENABLE_WINDOWS_KEYS": Must begin with a slash (/) Segmentation fault I was not able to find anything about the mentioned key/directory name and also google wasn't helping. Where can I start looking c) At startup I get a message "Gnome Settings Deamon" couldn't be started. After trying all solutions which I found, I completely reinstalled openSUSE (from the factory tree again), created a new user, but unfortunately the problem remained. The only way to use yast fully is from the command prompt. e) The gnome keyboard properties applet crashing when I try to start it. I still need to install bug-buddy before I can give more hints. If I start it from the console it hints again, that the gnome-settings-daemon is not running before crashing. f) NetworkManager doesn't recognize my network devices any more and says "no network devices found" so I had to change to the "traditional method using ifup" which works fine. I have a Dell True Mobile WLAN and a integrated fast Ethernet controller in my laptop. ___ Are any of these points visible for other people as well? Are any workarounds or solutions known? Shall I report the things as bugs? And beside from that I am struggling with videos (gstreamer doesn't want to play .wmv movies even after I played around a lot), opensync and evolution, ...
