Hi all! Next week I will move cronie[1] package to Factory, so it will replace old cron. If someone is against this step, please just write what's wrong. [opensuse-factory] syslog-ng update

Hello, I prepared updated syslog-ng packages with the close supervision of Marius Tomaschewski, the maintainer of the syslog-ng package. They are available in home:czanik in the openSUSE BS. I would like to see these packages included in Factory, to replace the ancient 2.0 syslog-ng, but MT seems to have disappeared (no response to e-mails in the past two weeks). Questions: - it works fine on my machines, but could anybody else test it? - what is the proper way to get syslog-ng updated in factory, if the maintainer seems to be unavailable? - I have now both 3.0 and 3.1 packages there, called syslog-ng and syslog-ng31. The ultimate goal is to include 3.1. Should I drop the current syslog-ng package and rename syslog-ng31 to syslog-ng? Hello, I'm trying to package syslog-ng 3.2-git, and ran into some troubles. V3.2 has an interesting new feature, called SCL (system configuration library), which tries to ease syslog-ng configuration. This works nicely when apparmor is disabled. SCL uses a script to generate part of the configuration. So, when system(); is used in syslog-ng.conf, it actually calls a script, which generates the missing parts based on the OS. In case of Linux, it's: linux-6y8u:~ # /usr/share/syslog-ng/include/scl/system/generate-system-source.sh unix-dgram("/dev/log"); file("/proc/kmsg" program-override("kernel") flags(kernel)); When apparmor is enabled, this script is not run, instead I see "permission denied" in the strace output. Question: how should I modify /etc/apparmor.d/sbin.syslog-ng to be able to run external scripts and/or applications. This is not only a problem for SCL, but syslog-ng can use these both as log source and destination. Once a solution is know, I'd put some comments in sbin.syslog-ng, so users could extend the AppArmor ruleset easily instead of disabling it... Forward this from the linux-xfs list, in hoping that decision-makers will consider XFS as the default suse OS install choice. It continually bests other file systems in optimized configuration performance tests and these new improvements sound like they only add more speed to the equation. For nearly all systems, disk speed is the bottle neck, so using the best solution possible should be strongly considered the default choice for all users -- regardless of 'political' concerns (which seem to often over-rule practicality, unfortunately). Linda p.s. I am not part of the xfs project. I've just used it with open suse (or previously, Suse) since ~ 2002 and have never regretted it. Current filesystem read rates using XFS are about 1GB/second on sustained multi-gigabyte reads. I'm pleased to state that using the experimental "delaylog" mount option (in vanilla linux-2.6.35) we measured a 17% performance increase for our benchmark scenario. (Other mount-options in use both before and after the "delaylog" option: noatime,nodiratime,nobarrier) That's a lot given that XFS was the fastest performing file-system for this application already. It's also a promising result regarding stability, as several other tests (using e.g. reiser4 or ceph) in the past led to crashes in the same benchmark scenario. [opensuse-factory] Updating Berkely DB

Hi, I am currently thinking about upgrading our bdb packages to a new release. For that I just submitted libdb-4_8 (containing db-4.8.30) to devel:libraries:c_c++. Would be nice if somebody with sufficient privileges in devel:libraries:c_c++ could accept submit request #48969. The next step would be integration into Factory by submitting it to Factory and adding "Provides: libdb-devel" to libdb-4_8-devel while removing it from libdb-4_5-devel (I guess we still need to keep libdb-4_5 around for some time) to make depended packages build against the new Version. But as history has shown libdb version updates can be a source of trouble so I'd like to ask what the best aproach would be to integrate it into Factory. In the pre-Buildservice times we had the "BETA" distribution to test those bigger changes. How is it handled nowadays? Is openSUSE:Factory:Staging comparable to BETA? BTW, while there are even newer Versions available (db-5.1.19 being the most recent one, released a few days ago) I decided to take the 4.8.X Version for now. The main reason for that is that e.g. OpenLDAP (which relies heavily on bdb) does not yet support any 5.X version. Hi list, according to http://www.gnu.org/software/guile/news.html we will have guile 2.0 stable branch out soon and we should consider it for 11.4. Let's look on home:pgajdos:guile19x. There are some packages which are/could be involved. gc: new version 7.1 needed by guile gnucash: new (unstable) version 2.3.15 guile1.9-ready TODO: test if it works guile: latest 1.9.12 as beta for stable 2.0 branch inkscape: BuildRequires gc-devel, but builds fine with new version libdbi: needed by new gnucash, nowdays not in Factory, but in devel:libraries:c_c++ and according to internal PDB database it is going to be in Factory (?) TODO: have it in Factory slib: builds fine with new guile autogen: not building with new guile so far gnome-games: not building with new guile so far graphviz: builds fine with new guile trackballs: not building with new guile so far lilypond: not building with new guile so far That's all dependencies I am aware of, if you know some other, please let me know. I will work on not building packages, but help is appreciated of course. If you have any suggestions, comments etc., please speak up. Petr

Hi, KDE crashes Xorg when used in kvm or virtualbox, but I don't consider it grave enough to delay Milestone, so I would like to release this week. The Xorg crash does not hit on real hardware I have available and GNOME and *X*DE do not have this problem (we assume it's related to KDE windows effects on unaccelerated hardware). [opensuse-factory] Replacing ancient packages with current packages

What's the designated procedure to get this to happen? Isn't keeping packages at latest versions in Factory supposed to be automatic? 11.3 was released with mc 4.6.2 long after 4.7.0.4 was released, many iterations past the 4.6.2 that Factory still has, while as of today mc stable is at 4.7.0.9 and mc devel is at 4.7.4.
