Hi,
As you've read elsewhere, we enabled build-compare in openSUSE:Factory. So far
we didn't sync out a full build, but it should finish soonish. After that we
will have the first real life test how much it helps ;)
But I'm afraid we're currently not green in factory, we have 72 failing
packages for i586, many caused by updating Qt to 4.5 and GNOME to 2.25.5
You can check where you can help here: http://tinyurl.com/dakem5
And the most important fact: we're still not having a final schedule for 11.2,
I let you know as soon as this changes.
Greetings, Stephan

Hello,
It might be related to a new harddisk I have added to my system, but I can't
grub make to use the correct vga mode any longer sinced about this time. (I'm
talking about 64bit openSUSE Factory here.)
Usually my vga mode is 31A, which is as it is defined in YaST and in all grub
config files I know of. Even the grub output claims that this video mode is
passed on to the kernel.
However, about two lines later the kernel starts and at once complains that it
doesn't know what to do with the vga mode 1F. I have to selected the vga mode
31A manually, then everything boots as expected.
I don't have the slightest idea where this 1F is coming from, I simply can't
get rid of it!?!??!?!?!?!?
mkinitrd, grub-install, yast2 bootloader with all different places I could
write the bootloader to - the wrong vga mode 1F stays.
device-map is
hd1 - /dev/disk/by-id/ata-Maxtor (new drive, containing Windows)
hd0 - /dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG (old drive, containing the SuSE
installation working flawlessly before YaST2 proposed me a new grub config in
order to boot the new Windows drive, too)
menu.lst entry of the defective section is
title openSUSE 11.2 Alpha 0 - 2.6.27.10-2
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27.10-2-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG
resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG splash=silent showopts vga=31a
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.27.10-2-default
/etc/grub.conf reads
setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0) (hd0,0)
setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0,0) (hd0,0)
setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0,0) (hd0,0)
quit
(Why so many entries?)
One more remark: The newly added Windows-harddisk already contained a working
windows partition, so Windows has not fiddled around with the bootloader, it
is all YaST2's problem :(.

Hello!
Yesterday I have found out that from time to time, when I type a typo, it takes
a huge amount of time until a "command of found message" appears and I can
continue my work.
Now I am able to reproduce it every time on my rc1 machine:
> time sl
bash: sl: command not found
real 0m1.289s
user 0m0.228s
sys 0m0.040s
Typing "echo 1 >/proc/sys/vm/drop_caches" enables me to reproduce it every time
(not doing it means that it happens at random).
I am quite sure that our command-not-found package is to blame. I do not know
how come it is that slow (I have only some five repositories defined) but it
kind of drives me mad.
So first - could you tell me a way to disable this functionality? (Commenting
out the last line in /etc/bash_command_not_found does not seem to help.) And
then, are there any known issues like that? I would like to see this problem
fixed but I am afraid we might find out that we simply cannot do any better
with Python.
If our users like it, we should probably rewrite it to C then :-(

Hello,
A significant change, how we build openSUSE:Factory and all repos building
against it have just made effective.
This change has the effect that we will not publish packages anymore when they
have effective not changed. So it should be way more comfortable to follow up
Factory.
The same message, a bit more verbose can be found here:
http://news.opensuse.org/2009/02/05/more-efficient-factory-development/
However, this is new stuff, so we might have introduced new problems, even
though we hope to have implemented this on the save side. But early in the
Alpha phase of 11.2 is a good point of time to test this :)
We may activate this compare check also in 11.1 and before builds later, but
lets first look how good it works for factory :)
bye

Hi,
I would like to backport the partitioner module from factory to 11.0, as
it has a change I want.
Is it enough to compile the single module only?, and how is its name? I
looked at http://svn.opensuse.org/svn/yast/trunk/ but couldn't find it
with the name "disk".

The new java 1.6 update 12 features for the first time :-) a web browser java
plugin for x86_64.
Is it going to be packaged for 11.1?

Hi,
I'm wondering if there is a plan for the 11.2 distribution? It's not
when it's available but more what Novell want's to achieve with it.
There are several important areas that I would like to help out with:
1. vastly reduced size of the core distro and easy setup for addons.
Take out all but core KDE (and Gnome, but I'm a KDE'er so....).
2. mobility. Moving between networks, WLAN, LAN, GPRS , Bluetooth ++.
Suspend/Resume, auto setup of VPN when moving outise the home LAN.
Roaming profile/autosyncing of data with server with Unison , iFolder
or similar.
3. syncing data with mobile phones
4. VPN client and server config. If so, choose one VPN server variant
and support it 100%. (I like OpenVPN :-) )
5. Home. Easy home server setup in one Yast module for useability.
Fileserver, printer server, music server, movie server, picture
server.
6. Connectivity from different types of clients, especially Upnp and
DLNA compatibility. Windows, Mac and Linux client access to printer
and file of cource and also wizards or simmilar to aid users in
getting connected on the client machines. (Yes this might involve
windows/mac/openSolaris SW)
7. media syncing with hanheld devices like iPod's, media phones,
Creative ZEN. Also conversion of media to the hanhelds preferred
format without the user needing to set up a complex structure.
8. officially supported game archive, maybe also with commercial games
available like Opera/flash etc. is now available.
9. availability on new platforms. Specific focus on netbooks.
10. Default media made for USB key as well as DVD.
11. a standard yast module for server setup of net install of
machines. This will aid in testing when there is a lot of machine
variants to test. Easy restore to original config would be good also.
(All server based :-) ) I have 15+ different computeres that I can
test with , but it's to much work going back and forth now so I just
use 2.
Of course, if I do not make any sense (which often happens) I will be
glad to discuss the points.
And again, these are all parts I will gladly assist in testing. If
some of it is made in Python I will try to assist with code also, but
be warned. It's better to keep me as tester!
Kind Regards
Birger

Hi,
The Factory LiveCDs are no longer in my private acount, but are now published
automatically once they built: http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/
Right now only x86_64 finished, but you can monitor the progress in the
openSUSE:Factory:Live OBS project.
Otherwise there is little progress to report atm. Factory works flawless
though, which is the good news :)
We enabled some security checks, so some more failures are currently
in openSUSE:Factory, but nothing to worry about in the current state.
Greetings, Stephan

Hi,
are there any plans to support Kwin4 (at least at the xrdp server side)
instead of compiz> Switching between compiz and kwin4 is just no option for
the normal user.
How much is the "remote compositing" tied into compiz, is there a list of
requests done by the wm/cm on the xrdp side and how these get interpreted on
the xserver side?
Which parts of the wm/cm are done on the xrdp side, and which are done on the
xserver side?
Thanks,
Stefan

After installing a package why not ask if
the user wants to install or remove more packages
before bringing up the YaST2 Writing the system
configuration?
This would save a lot of time and make things faster
when multiple uses of Software Management
is going to happen I would think.
Cheers,
Bob
