[opensuse] Local rpm storage/cache

Hi I do a lot of testing at home and experimenting so I often have something like 10 virtual installs with opensuse running. Up to recently I had a unofficial mirror for base and update repositories. A simple cron job every night used wget to sync my local repository. By configuring my vm's to use this local repository I avoided downloading the same file again for each vm, during repeated install experiments and system updates. Now I am looking to replace my local mirror with something more flexible, so suggestions, best practice, pointers to examples is welcome. I not sure, but think that I'v seen a article on some Opensuse site, describing a solution based on nfs mounting the download directory on all hosts. [opensuse] Why can't VLC on opensuse play .mp4 file that plays fine in VLC for windows?

All, I do not do online video stuff often, but had a link from SO question about a 2-body problem for a game engine that I tried to look at: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WExMN1jGknjy4k8qg9MLE5S459eqQIY-/view?usp=… When I attempt to watch with VLC on 42.3 it tells me no codec for mp4a and error in part 10. Opening the same file in VLC on Win7 plays just fine Is there something that I've screwed up in my VLC install (from packman) or is this a no codec on Linux issue? -- David C. [opensuse] vlc title bar

Sometimes when VLC starts, it starts in the top-left corner of the screen and doesn't have a title bar, so there's no minimise, maximise and close buttons. Does anybody have any idea how or why this happens, or any way to stop this annoying habit? [opensuse] setting up ssh

So I just finished installing Leap 15.0 on my laptop. Nice. So far things look good. One question - how do I get port 22 to open on startup as well as get the sshd service to run on startup? On previous versions of opensuse, I went into # /etc/sysconfig/SuSEfirewall2 and changed the appropriate line to FW_CONFIGURATIONS_EXT="sshd" Then I typed in insserv sshd as root and that set it up to always run. As it acts as my home server, this is incovenient: /etc/crypttab: cr_home /dev/disk/by-id/ata-KINGSTON... none none /etc/fstab: /dev/mapper/cr_home /home xfs lazytime,exec,nofail 1 2 On another machine (a laptop wit 15.0) if I don't type the password fast enough it goes into emergency mode, prompting me to repair or pressing control-D. It doesn't even wait 3 minutes: /etc/crypttab: cr_sda8 /dev/sda8 /etc/fstab: LABEL=Home /home xfs lazytime 0 1 Now, I would like to change things. I would prefer the first machine to boot anyway after, say, 5 minutes. And the same for the laptop. Another option would be to have the laptop wait forever. The rationale for the first one, the server, is that I might ssh as root or as plain user with home defined to somewhere different than /home, and enter the encryption password remotely. The rationale for the second one is that I boot it and I go look somewhere else; when I look again it is at the ^D prompt and I have to ctrl-alt-supr to retry. [opensuse] Kudos to the 15.0 devs and those who made kde3 possible (both then and now)

For those that don't check, You have a full kde3 build available for Leap 15.0. It works brilliantly. Special thanks to all that made it possible. I can't tell you how rewarding it is to have a full featured desktop that just works. No distractions, no worry about something not working correctly, no worry about having to collect data and file bug-reports, just working. Kudos for continuing to make that option available. For machines with limited RAM, there is no better desktop that provides as much, fully up and running with konqueror, kwrite and konsole in a total of 215M (that includes leap/everything) http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_Leap_15.0 I have my plasma install, as well as fluxbox and i3, but by far, kde3 is the favorite. -- David C. [opensuse] Category YUM?

I have two computers running opensuse 42.3. One of them was failing to refresh its repositories. When I looked in yast2 I noticed that the repositories had a category of YUM, whereas on the other computer the categories were YaST. I don't think this difference caused the failure to update, but when I delete and re-add repositories, sometimes they are YaST and sometimes YUM. Does it make any difference? Why is it different on one computer? [opensuse] firewall errors?

I'm making some progress on my tvheadend problems. I've managed to retrieve a log file from the FireTV and it has log lines like: 21:38:05.039 T:18446744072835107104 ERROR: AddOnLog: Tvheadend HTSP Client: pvr.hts - unable to connect to 192.168.1.83:9982 Now if I look in the journal on my linux box using YaST, I see apparently relevant entries but it won't let me select them!!!!!! :( STUPID YAST. So off to find a way to look at the journal that WILL let me select text ... OK, I found journalctl, so here's an example: Aug 07 13:23:21 acer-suse kernel: SFW2-INext-DROP-DEFLT IN=eth0 OUT= MAC=d8:cb:8a:9c:3a:a5:60:6d:3c:05:af:5b:08:00 SRC=192.168.1.82 DST=192.168.1.83 LEN=60 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=64 ID=7538 DF PROTO=TCP SPT=57413 DPT=9982 WINDOW=65535 RES=0x00 SYN URGP=0 OPT (020405B40402080A089E4F7C0000000001030306) Now 192.168.1.82 is my FireTV, 192.168.1.83 is this linux box where tvheadend is running and port 9982 is the HTSP port of the tvheadend server. So it looks like my box is helpfully :( dropping these packets. The question is why? As far as I know I'm not running a firewall, so I go to YaST to check and see a Firewall Configuration box with a popup saying it is trying to connect to a firewalld and then an error (and again YaST won't let me select any of that text - what is that all about?). So as they say, WTF? What is going on here.
