to discuss sloppiness of tests (or at least an unwillingness to clarify test assumptions) (its a while ago, but i believe this is the outline). in 2016 he did comparisons of different distros, testing read write speed using a database. I am trying to use vncviewer from a Leap 42.3 system to connect to a Windows display. I have done this in the past. Now I am trying from a Leap 42.3 install. I get this from the vcnviewer: Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-bold-r-*-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" to type FontStruct Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font Error: Aborting: no font found It does this after accepting the password. In fact, I have many fonts installed (it's a KDE desktop). I have seen this reported over 15 years ago. But I don't see much now. And the solutions were typically to install some fonts. These vnc RPMs are installed. The vncviewer is from tightvnc x11vnc-0.9.13-18.2.x86_64 libXvnc1-1.6.0-21.1.x86_64 xorg-x11-Xvnc-1.6.0-21.1.x86_64 tightvnc-1.3.10-123.10.x86_64 These font packages are installed: xorg-x11-fonts-core-7.6-34.16.noarch xorg-x11-fonts-7.6-34.16.noarch gnu-unifont-bitmap-fonts-20080123-88.3.noarch noto-sans-fonts-20151215-4.13.noarch google-noto-fonts-doc-20151215-4.13.noarch liberation-fonts-1.07.2-6.3.noarch hack-fonts-2.020-3.3.noarch ghostscript-fonts-std-9.06-29.5.noarch Other X applications seen to run (e.g., xterm). [opensuse] Scanner Setup

Hi, I have dug out my old scanner. A Tiny FU318D. The scanner powers up fine. It was last used with Windows 98SE in 2006 I have plugged it in and is does not show in SimpleScan scanimage -L does not find any scanners lsusb shows it as: Bus 001 Device 007: ID 0461:0340 Primax Electronics, Ltd Colorado 9600 Scanner This is the first scanner I have come across that doesn't 'Just work' in Linux. Does anyone know how I can go about diagnosing the problem and getting the scanner to work? I wouldn't know where to start on this one. [opensuse] Is YAST able to configure and administrate a mailrelay?

Hi, I am exploring the option to set up a mail relay with SuSE/SLES. I have always done it Debian before and now I wanted to try another approach (mainly because of YAST so other people admin it too) Is it possible to set up a mail relay that does DKIM (and possible ARC) signing with YAST only? Ofc there is alot of different domains that is going to use that relay. Let me know if I am unclear! Thanks!

[opensuse] Ethernet and onboot/oncable

The configuring Ethernet ports in openSUSE, it is possible to say when the port should be configured. This is the STARTMODE= value in the port configuration file. Has there been a deliberate change in the 'onboot' mode? In previous openSUSE releases, this would cause the port to be configured when the system is booted, independent of whether there is a cable attached. If one want to require that there be a cable, STARTMODE can bet set to 'oncable'. In Leap 42,3, it seems that when one selects On Boot in YAST, STARTMODE is set to 'auto'. If there is no cable attached, the port does not get an address. It acts like 'on cable connect'. I am not running Network Manager. The ports are managed in the traditional way (or whatever fills that role these days). The network and related services are all running before anyone logs in. This is a problem in systems that boot along with other hardware. If, say, the Leap machine starts it's network before some other system, the port on Leap will not get an address. This is bad. While plugging in cable (or the remote system turning on) will cause the port to get an address, services that use that port are not restarted. For example, dhcpd will ignore ports without an address - and it will never try again until you actively restart it. [opensuse] btrfs and deletion of large directory

I've a server accumulating a lot of netflow data. The whole filesystem is btrfs. It's not yet full, but it's getting full enough that I've been removing some old netflow data directories. But even though the directories themselves are quite large, deleting them has no impact of reported disk usage, either at the OS level, or the level of the various btrfs filesystem commands. I've run the suse cron.weekly and cron.monthly btrfs jobs (scrub and balance). They do not help, with the same reported usage before and after jobs run. I've removed old snapshots. This also has no impact on reported usage. What sorts of trouble shooting steps would be next? What am I missing? I am using the 'additional hosts' mechanism of DNSMasq to block adverts Only DNSmasq doens't seem to be diing the job. Does anyone know a way to search the mailing list archives where the search criteria get obeyed? Whenever I try to search by date range, first using the search box on e.g. https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/ and then opening the advanced search link, the date range I provide is utterly disregarded. When I try to limit results to only one list, that too is utterly disregarded. Also, there's no option in the select list to search only the body. Yesterday or the day before there was a post I now want to follow up to, but I already deleted it when it arrived, and have no idea which thread or list it was on. [opensuse] text changes in libreoffice calc

I am trying to make a record of my partitions on various drives in a libreoffice calc spreadsheet. Whenever I start to type something like "/dev/sda1" into a cell, as soon as I hit the 2nd forward slash, the first forward slash disappears and the font of what I just typed switches to italics. It seems like some kind of autocorrect feature that should be easily disabled, but I can't find that keystroke sequence in the autocorrect listings, as there is nothing in there that indicates a change in font style. jfyi: the lightweight web browser qupzilla has been replaced with falkon today.
