[opensuse] Intermittent slowness on 13.1-64

Hi Folks, Has anyone noticed an intermittent overall balkiness with 13.1-64? Has that issue with journald on spinning media been fixed yet? I've seen this a couple of times now, but haven't been able to zero in on the cause yet. I'm trying setting "Storage=volatile" in /etc/systemd/journal.conf to see if it makes a difference. [opensuse] OS13.2 RC1: Network manager not running

I just installed OS13.2 RC1 in a virtualbox. The network-manager icon is visible in the System tray with a red x next to it. When I hover over the icon it says "NetworkManager not running". When I click on the icon I see that no connection is configured. [opensuse] Trackball speed?

I have been unable to adjust the pointer speed for a Kensington M01047 Trackball Orbit with scroll ring. In KDE when I adjust the pointer speed in desktop configuration it does NOT change pointer speed of the ball movement. I would like to be able to slow the pointer motion of the ball. I frequently run Wireshark over SSH. One thing I've noticed is I'll often get an error: "# The program 'wireshark' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied)'. (Details: serial 251 error_code 10 request_code 130 minor_code 1) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)" Once I've received that message, I can then give the command again to start Wireshark and it runs fine. Any idea what might be causing this? [opensuse] when is data physically written to disk (Reiserfs)?

Hello I'd like to know when data that should be written is really written physically to the disk. I use OS 12.3, Reiserfs (with encrypted LV for /home, /root, /swap, on 1 drive and separate encrypted drive outside LVM) Several times after switching off without properly shutting down (after power fail) and rebooting I noticed that there were many systemd-fsck[720]: Trans replayed:... Trans replayed: mountid... even when the computer was not doing anything before the switch-off occurred. Like today: the computer was "on" during the night, but without doing anything, in the early morning the electricity was cut off and so I had to reboot and I got hundreds of "replay"-messages... I thought, data would be written to the disk physically and definitively at least in moments when the computer has nothing else to do, but how comes that after hours of being idle there still remains so much to replay? Is this normal? Should I check some settings? Thanks for explanation or hints... Hi, I am using v12.3. Recently I have been encountering more html5 videos on the internet. They do not work well in either chromium or firefox. They will not play until the video is completely loaded which for some reason takes significantly longer than flash and there is no sound. I have high speed internet and have no problems with anything else, just html5. Hello: Does anyone know about a decent manual or howto on pulseaudio? I mean something that explains the basics, its mechanism etc, not only some short instructions if want achieve this type this or similar. I checked pulseaudio wiki web page (http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/) but it is really lacking substantial information. Many of the links/pages are simply empty. I also tried to read command line syntax as the link http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/CLI/ suggests but could not find the manual on my opensuse (12.2) system. > man pulse-cli-syntax No manual entry for pulse-cli-syntax I would like to do so "complex" things such as recording and listening to a stream so that the recording volume should not be altered by changing the listening volume (in other terms the volumes for listening and for recording should be independent.) Furthermore I don't know how to use pavucontrol. How and why the the different volume settings alter each other? Why is it that when I move the slider to the left (decrease volume) there is no audible volume difference until a point, but after that point there is a dramatic volume decrease? [opensuse] ld --as-needed -lgcc_s causing linker failure when called by gcc, OK standalone

All, (ld linker gurus especially), I am befuddled by the behavior of gcc/ld in compiling/linking a couple of c/assembly files that I need help figuring out. The files are just a couple of the example files which I'm building as a 32-bit elf file on x86_64. For some reason when ld is called by gcc, the build fails. Calling ld standalone works fine. I need to understand what default behavior of the gcc/collect2/ld call is causing the problem and how I can fix it. I also have one other question at the end concerning why '-dynamic-linker /lib/ld-linux.so.2' is expressly required if it is the default, but that is separate from this first issue. For the first issue, the assembly/c files are all contained in: [a whopping 3.7k total] http://www.3111skyline.com/dl/bugs/openSuSE/131/pcasm.tar.bz2 I built the assembly files without issue using: $ nasm -felf -D ELF_TYPE -o asm_io.o asm_io.asm $ nasm -felf -o first.o first.asm Compiling the c file to object and performing an independent link produces a working executable (there is a 32/64 bit issue left, but irrelevant to this discussion): $ gcc -c -m32 -o main.o main.c $ ld -dynamic-linker /lib/ld-linux.so.2 \ -o first first.o asm_io.o main.o \ -m elf_i386 -lc Attempting to compile/link with gcc is where the problem arises. If I replace the compile of main.c to object with a request that gcc perform the compile/link, the build fails: $ gcc -v -m32 -o first main.c first.o asm_io.o -Wl,-melf_i386 <snip> x86_64-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status Now, the part I'm stumped with is why is the link failing? So why does the link fail? Looking further, I see what appears like the likely suspects, but I am not familiar enough with the --as-needed --no-as-needed options to know if this is in fact the cause: <snip> -melf_i386 -lgcc --as-needed -lgcc_s --no-as-needed -lc -lgcc --as-needed -lgcc_s --no-as-needed <snip> The manual says: --as-needed --no-as-needed This option affects ELF DT_NEEDED tags for dynamic libraries mentioned on the command line after the --as-needed option. Normally the linker will add a DT_NEEDED tag for each dynamic library mentioned on the command line, regardless of whether the library is actually needed or not. --as-needed causes a DT_NEEDED tag to only be emitted for a library that at that point in the link satisfies a non-weak undefined symbol reference from a regular object file or, if the library is not found in the DT_NEEDED lists of other libraries, a non-weak undefined symbol reference from another dynamic library. Object files or libraries appearing on the command line after the library in question do not affect whether the library is seen as needed. This is similar to the rules for extraction of object files from archives. --no-as-needed restores the default behaviour. (https://sourceware.org/binutils/docs/ld/Options.html#Options) This seems to indicate for -lgcc_s that a DT_NEEDED tag will only be emitted if -lgcc_s satisfies: (1.) a non-weak undefined symbol reference from a regular object file or (2.) a non-weak undefined symbol reference from another dynamic library Since, libgcc_s is not needed, what is causing either of the criteria (1.) or (2.) to be satisfied? Is it some default? More importantly, how to tell the linker not to look for it? Is there some additional option I can pass or rearrange the order of the gcc command that would help? Lastly, if '-dynamic-linker /lib/ld-linux.so.2' is the default, then why must it be expressly included with the standalone ld call in order to produce a working executable? If it is omitted, the executable is produced, but inoperable due to /usr/lib/libc.so.1 being used instead of /lib/ld-linux.so.2 in the executable -- which I'm having difficulty understanding. [opensuse] desktop dying after few seconds of switching on

Bit of a general PC repair question here, but it's one on which I was hoping to install openSUSE, and I can't even get past the first hurdle. An ex-friend-turned-trou-de-cul (French people are never your friends, only future enemies) donated me a P4 desktop which supposedly worked fine but upon switching on, it only lasts a few seconds before going off. So although I can access the BIOS, I cannot even get to make any configuration changes in time before it turns off. Of course I've done a first check for loose or wrong connections. My hunch is either the motherboard or PSU is at fault, but these are things I cannot test as I have no suitable alternatives available. I'm going to embark on a systematic process of elimination with some of the other parts, but does anybody want to throw a suggestion into the hat as to what is usually at fault in this situation? I'm not going to examine every part to provide detailed specs just yet, suffice to mention that it has integrated Intel 965 graphics, so it can't be that old 'unseated video card' chestnut. [opensuse] A better way to do mouse keys.

I have a Logitech MX510 USB mouse. It has a number of extra buttons as well as the scroll wheel, which also acts as the 'center' button. By default it works just fine with Linux. However not all the extra button do things. And some don't do what I want. I realise I can use xbindkeys, but that's another matter. My question is this: In front of and behind the scroll wheel there are buttons that have double chevrons. Pressing them scrolls the page. GOOD. I like that. But it only scrolls 4 lines at a time. How can I make these buttons scroll more than 4 lines? How/where is the 4 lines (I think its 4, it may be 3 or 5) defined? Can I change it without recompiling? There are also a couple of thumb buttons and a button that looks like this. http://png-2.findicons.com/files/icons/1890/my_toolbar/32/copy.png Currently they don't do anything. Except by using xbindkeys is there any way I can set them to do things? I'm aware of the too in systemsettings for KDE4 but it only seems to work with keyboard keys. By the way, Debian devs look to be signing off on some constitutional document on their email list to avoid a fork, so a fork looks to be a measure of last resort. [opensuse] Bootalbe USB stick - OS 13.1

Hello, In a previous post on this topic I asked for help and was able to install OS 13.1 KDE on a usb stick. I am posting a small follow-up because of a very positive experience and I want to thank the developers. The USB stick was run on a new laptop which had win8.1 on it, I did that because I had to wait a month before I could sort out the UEFI issues and install it on the hard disk. I was able to fully update the packages on the USB stick and even to add packman repo and other repos to the software manager. Just to try it out, I eventually installed the opensuse on the laptop from the USB stick. It was incredible to me that the installed system on the laptop was fully updated! And I can continue to update the USB stick, run it on other computers, and if I need to install 13.1 on another computer, I can get a fully updated install right off the bat! I have experienced opensuse getting better and better in many respects, but I found this incredible. Thanks to all those who made this possible. I've recently had to upgrade PHP on a long-running server (openSUSE 11.0). Yes, there are reasons why this hasn't been upgraded. I upgraded PHP to 5.3.0 which at first seemed to work just fine. However, one of the few, rarely used, web-apps left on this box is now having an encoding issue wrt mysql data and I simply cannot find the right setting to tweak. Everything should be in UTF8 - apache outputs utf8 etc., but when the data comes from mysql - when fetched with e.g. mysqli_fetch_assoc() - UTF8 characters are interpreted literally instead of as UTF8. My php.ini has default_charset = "UTF-8" mbstring.internal_encoding = "UTF-8" The database is in utf8: mysql> show create database db_example; db_example | CREATE DATABASE `db_example` /*!40100 DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci */ | The apache config has: AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 I've now moved this web-app to a 2nd apache server, also running php 5.3 - the issue remains the same. I have a working and acceptable full-res X running, including all the eye candy like rotating box,, fading windows etc etc etc. but, but but ... [opensuse] Screen display corruption/touchpad weirdness after recent bunch of updates (nVidia binary driver)

I was off for two weeks and after return got a bunch of updates, including GNOME, Firefox and new nVidia driver. Now I get rather nasty problems in at least two areas (after reboot) - screen updates sometimes look like rapid blinking of part of window; and do not really redraw screen until I try to scroll window. I get it e.g. on forums.opensuse.org site, or in Firefox status bar (which is shown in the bottom when page is loading) or in Firefox tab titles. - in Claws mail scrolling with touchpad sometimes gets "stuck" - it continues to scroll even when I raise finger. Moreover, sometimes it scrolls *both* message list and message body. It almost looks like events get dispatched incorrectly. However, scheduled maintenance or problems are normally mentioned on the UNI's main page, which is also unreachable. Even the initial page of the city-council is down, just like the Max Planck Institute for Experimental Medicine. Is there a black-out in that region? I wanted to file a bug report on the openSUSE Bugzilla. I've done a few before, and though the system was somewhat clunky and unintuitive, I could always navigate my way eventually to doing what was needed. Now I've logged in and tried to click the links to file a new bug, whereupon I get a heading and text at the top of the resulting page saying: Bugzilla – Select Classification Please select the classification. But then nowhere on the rest of the page do I see anything remotely related to selecting a classification. Looking for help, I clicked the link to the 'Bugzilla Upgrade Slidedeck' but decided I didn't want to wade through a 25-page PDF to learn how to file a two-minute bug report. The linked Help Page, and the Howto section about filing a report also bears no relevance to any options I get on the page when I try. I don't know if something isn't loading correctly or is missing from the page, or the new design is incredibly obtuse and mystifying. But consequently I cannot file my bug about a borked 13.2RC1 installation. Can't wait for the final release, it's going to be... unusable. [opensuse] Lag Problem

I am seeing periods of lag, usually one to two seconds, but up to ten seconds. This makes loading pages into Firefox very slow and difficult. where would you suggest I look for causes, and what tools to use? [opensuse] Nvidia Geforce GT 730M and Bumblebee

Hello, I am having trouble configuring X in a new Lenovo Thinkpad. Video Card is Nvidia GeForce GT 730M. The nouveau driver worked out of the box (OS 13.1, 64bit, KDE), but there were frequent crashes with Firefox. I installed the x11-video-nvidiaG02 package (from the Suse 13.1 Nvidia repos) and dependencies without success and then the G03 packages without success. I did blacklist nouveau in /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist file and edited /etc/sysconfig system-kernel section as indicated in the SDB. The 730M chip is not listed in the SDB Nvidia-drivers page. Googling for my card I found several Ubuntu references to bumblebee being necessary to get the 730M card to work. The opensuse SBD nvidia-bumblebee page seems to indicate that bumblebee is for power management issues only. It indicates that they have been tested on 13.1 This page: https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:Bumblebee-Project:nVidia:310.40 Shows my card as supported by the bumblebee packages. It also mentions an installer that will download the drivers from one of two nvidia sites. However: Index of /repositories/home:/Bumblebee-Project:/nVidia:/310.40 Lists only 12.3, factory, SLE_11(sp1 and sp2), tumbleweed directories - no 13.1. Is bumblebee the way to go? Which are the correct packages? If so, will the nvidia driver be updated automatically each time the kernel is updated (if the proper repo is enabled)? Any pointers would be much appreciated. [opensuse] pidgin pinning the cpu

With the upgrade pidgin is pinning my cpu now and not showing on the screen. I moved the old ./.purple directory to ./.purple.bak and started it up againm and it worked fine. But I lost all my logs and even some of the accounts i had. I forgot their names and passwords :) Why is it racing? This is easy with 13.2's dracut. /etc/dracut.conf is reasonably self-explanatory. How is $SUBJECT done with mkinitrd? Man /etc/sysconfig/kernel says nothing about it. *buntu has a mkinitrd.conf file I can't find in 13.1. Man /etc/modprobe.d/99-local.conf says nothing useful. [opensuse] No sound in 13.2

Hi, I've got some Haswell onboard sound in my machine which works fine with 13.1 but whatever I try with YaST2 in 13.2rc1 I get no sound working at all. It seems to set up the "card" with snd-hda-intel (or what the actual name is) but I cannot hear anything. YaST2 does not even give me volume sliders. Any known issues there? [opensuse] UEFI dual boot

Hi, seems I'm still very new to UEFI and currenty way of bootloading. I've got a machine with UEFI (but w/o secure boot) which currently only has 13.1 installed. Now I've added 13.2rc1 to another partition. (During installation the bootloader refused to do anything with EFI because of an architecture conflict for x86-64; confusing but not that relevant here.) So I've got 13.1 and 13.2 both installed now but normal boot up shows only the 13.1 boot entry still. Now I've checked grub2 config on 13.1 which does not contain 13.2 (even after a grub2-mkconfig run the os prober didn't find 13.2). Then I checked the grub2 config on the 13.2 partition and in that I see two boot entries (one for 13.2 and one for 13.1). So all I would need to do is make UEFI load grub2 from the 13.2 partition I guess but I fail to understand how to do that. Is that defined via efibootmgr in that strange string? Boot0000* openSUSE HD(1,800,4e000,7e36557b-6396-4f70-9287-7d7b8e00c927)File(\EFI\opensuse\grubx64.efi) or is grubx64.efi just loading some magically marked partition like the boot flag in MBR?
