[opensuse] ddrescue bottleneck on faulty drive

Hi ListMates, I'm not sure if this is the correct forum but hopefully someone will have an answer for me. I have a faulty 500Gb notebook disk that I want to clone and recover. I use ddrescue (with the -n option) to clone the faulty hdd to a new hdd. The problem is that based on the current stats, it will take days/weeks to complete the clone!!! I know that I have a faulty drive, I just want to clone the faulty drive unto a new drive, simply skip the faulty sectors (zero fill on the destination drive) and continue the clone - I don't want the system to keep retrying over and over to read the faulty sector - try once and die and set the destination sector zero-filled. Where there are no errors on the original drive the copy goes fast, but once it hits a bad sector it is painfully slow!!!! So where is the bottle neck? 1) ddrescue - according to the docs if one uses the -n option it wont bother to read or recover the faulty sectors on the faulty drive (I also tried -r1 - read/retry once) but to no avail. BTW I tried both read from beginning of disk as well as reading from back (-R), but alas to no avail as once it gets to the faulty sectors it becomes painfully slow. 2) is it a kernel parameter - ie how to turn of retrying to read the faulty sector n..times 3) is it a sata driver parameter - ie likewise how to turn of retrying to read the faulty sector n..times 4) or is it the firmware on the faulty hdd? (in that case I'm not sure there is a solution to turn of retrying faulty sectors or remapping them) I'm not sure there is a solution but if anyone knows any help would be most appreciated. [opensuse] Right click menu disappeared

Hi, On this laptop I have three openSuse systems installed. I have 13.1 with KDE 4.13, another 13.1 with KDE Framework5, and finally 13.2 with KDE 4.14.1 installed. On both of the 13.1 systems, right clicking in any appropriate place will no longer bring up a menu list of actions. The 13.2 system right click still operates normally and brings up a menu of actions. All the touchpad configurations seem to be the same in all systems, and I haven't been able to find any settings to change to restore the right click menus in the two 13.1 systems. [opensuse] firefox & webcam

Friends -- I need to participate in a web conference. The website only supports Firefox in Linux. My problem is that Firefox will not recognize my USB webcam. The webcam is fine with cheese. In Firefox, the camera does not come on, and the web page returns "audio unavailable." It looked for audio since it could not find video. I have poked around Firefox help without finding what I need. Any suggestions on things to try? [opensuse] updating 13.2 RC1 to final release

I was thinking of throwing 13.2 RC1 on a redundant old laptop to test a couple of things. I'd be wanting to update it to the final release when it's ready. Can that be acheived merely by doing a zypper dup? This may be harking back to some dark age, but I recall in the past it wasn't always so straight-forward to update a beta or RC to the final release, and there was even advice against trying to go about it that way. HI Does anyone know how to make changes to the printer config actually work i.e. colour changes, printing quality.? I've got the latest samsung driver installed. The printer is connected to my Linux PC via USB and the Windows machine uses it via Wifi. Hello, on Debian/Ubuntu you can save the package list and install the same packages on an other PC or reinstall packages on a clean setup. This is helpful i.e. for reinstalling systems with backups. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReinstallingSamePackages Is there something similar in the RPM world? I already know "rpm -qa". But this is not perfect. A missing feature is, that I want to install the packages from the same repositories like on the source PC. However, when in a LibreOffice cell I type "agosto" it is automatically replaced with "Agosto". Undo doesn't undo the capitalization. I edit it back, and it is undone. I go to autocorrect, and I add an exception: Replace With Agosto agosto Useless. In options, I untick "Capitalize first letter of every sentence". Useless. I disable "Use replacement table". Useless. What else is left? Where else does it get the order to replace what *I* write with something else? I create a new sheet. I start in a column writing: agosto enero Agosto agosto <--- here it corrects me to Agosto. It refuses to accept lowercase, till I copy paste the first cell into the 4th. agosto on subsequent cells, it forces using the same case as the previous one. Why? Now it insists on using "agosto". Where can I disable that silly, stupid behaviour? ME mandates what to write in MY documents! :-/ In order to correct this, I now have to open a second document, there in a new sheet write the text in the format I want, and copy the cell back to the intended place in the first document. I am using openSUSE 13.2 on a 64bit machine. I have an external sound card connected by USB - SB X-Fi Surround 5.1 which is SoundBlaster. After installation of the OS I had to install alsa firmware to get the soud card to show up in YaST2-Sound which is now configurable. The problem I am having is I don't have a widget or applet to adjust the volume in the task bar. I also noticed I don't have a network connection widget or applet there either. Can someone please advise me on how to show these two widgets on the task bar. The only way I can adjust my volume is the external speakers volume button which I want to leave at one setting. And I would like to view my network connection while I am connected. Thanks in advance. [opensuse] How to reclaim performance lost over gradual slowdown?

So, I've noticed how nice a new installation is. Then it gets progressively sluggish over time. Some of it is obvious such as when the programs menu has more programs in it. Other than that though, not so obvious. [opensuse] how is bash scrambling typed user commands?

Since the new install of opensuse 12.3, there are times when commands entered into xterm windows are scrambled or trashed thus: Entered: "ifdown wlan9" Echoed: "iwanolw fdn9" (sans quotes, of course.) I am absolutely certain it is not merely echoing what I entered. This occurs most often when command is entered immediately after the window receives focus and when there is a delay before the command is echoed by the shell. This also occurs in konsole and mlterm but with less frequency. It has also happened a couple times entering urls in qupzilla and firefox. Any idea what is going on here? [opensuse] old problem again: time stamps of file on sdcard vfat filesystem

Hello: This is an old problem but I still have no key how to solve it. I have an sdcard used in a digital camera. Photos were taken in February. I want to copy the files from there to my openSUSE 12.2 desktop computer. I also want the files to have local time stamps corresponding to the original time stamp on the vfat filesystem. For example if the picture was taken (according to creation time in the file's metainfo) at 10:30, I want 10:30 to be the file's time stamp after mounting the sdcard. Currently the file's time stamp is 09:30 if I don't use tz option for the mount command. If I use tz=UTC option the file's time stamp is 11:30. Neither of these is correct. I tried yo use other values for tz, utz=CET, tz=UTC+1 etc but they were not accepted. It is really important to have the correct time stamps, so how can I? do You use no firewall foe Your notebook? it would be better, to care about that! without a firewall, anyone, who has the knowledge, can take over Your pc, and You have no more to think about biving Your passwords to the programmers of SuSe! Even my t-com-box , I use here, produced by former state official T-COM , has a simple firewall . And, You can set a minimum on policies, to prevent free access to Your data, SuSe´s firewall has more finegraded functions, You block services per port & their are { since I have learned networking in the early 1990´s } a whole bunch of ports more, which can be used to transfer ~ 1050 types o f protocols, to be used to transfer data to & from Your ASUS notebook. You should improve Your knowledge in Internet & Network Security, Ruben, after that, You will ask, how good Your Mint Firewall will protect You from external access & not rely on "linux" as a whole..., vulnerabilities in os are as a minefield, you never know, if the next is expolding behind, right, left or above You...:-D in every case, have a nice day in Brooklyn . [opensuse] Missing Mime handler for application/x-gzip

Hi guys, I'm trying to play a flash video ( .flv), but none of the players in opensuse work. Some complain that they are looking for the decoder for "application/x-gzip" This ought to be easy to provide, but I'm not sure what they want for a program to handle this. I'm trying to move some php code from an opensuse 11.1 system to a 13.1 ditto, and I need to rebuild the mailparse extension. This normally entails downloading the extension, running phpize, configure then make. [opensuse] SuSE 13.1: kernel panic at boot time

Hello, I just updated my laptop from OpenSuSE 12.1 to 13.1. Now the system has a kernel panic from time to time when booting. On the older SuSE systems I was using the boot.omsg for such issues, but I am not an expert for systemd. I now know journalctl /usr/lib/systemd/systemd -b but this does not show the previous crashed boot. journalctl /usr/lib/systemd/systemd --boot=-1 failed. How can I log the boot process to see a complete systemd crash log? [opensuse] OpenSuSE 13.1: "System policies prevent you from getting the brightness level"

After setting my security settings to a more secure setting in yast2 I suddenly get a message "System policies prevent you from getting the brightness level as soon as the brightness is adjusted automatically or via keys on the laptop. All this under KDE4 and on the laptop that I updated from 12.1 to 13.1 lately. SuSE updates are from October 3rd, 2014. This was not the case before when using less secure settings. I've seen Bug 269310 - Senseless "System policies prevent you from getting the brightness level" dialog https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=269310 but this is from 2014-01-07 and says "This is still a problem w/ openSUSE 13.1 and KDE 4.11.4." Are there any better news about this bug? Do I have to change some policy settings or file attributes? [opensuse] apper problem on 13.1 32-bit

A couple of weeks ago I started seeing a little red box with a white X in it on my kde panel. When I hover the mouse over it it reads: file:///usr/share/kde4/apps/plasma/plasmoids/org.packagekit.updater/contents/ui/main.qml:22:1: plugin cannot be loaded for module "org.kde.apper": Cannot load library /usr/lib/kde4/imports/org/kde/apper/libapperplugin.so (libapper.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) When, as root, I run apper I get: # apper apper(3886): KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server: "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." apper(3885): KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly. When, as user, I run apper I get a graphical box that says: Cannot load library /use/lib/kde4/kcm_apper.so: (libapper.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) Cannot load library /usr/lib/kde4/kcm_apper.so: (libapper.so: cannot open shared object file: Nosuch file or directory) Possible reasons: *An error occured during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module *You have old third party modules lying around. I can still get updates with yast but it would be nice to have apper working again. I have removed and reinstalled apper and all the above files seem to be present.
