At the time, I blamed Pulseaudio, but I may have been wrong ... I started by completely removing PA from my system (not just disabling it), but though the problem improved, it didn't go away completely. That seemed to exonerate PA, even if having it installed aggravated the underlying problem. So I reinstalled PA. I listen to my music through Music Player Daemon (MPD), so the next thing was to try another player. MPlayer behaved flawlessly, even through PA, so that pointed the finger at MPD. I monitor my computer with gkrellm, and I noticed that there was very little disk activity during playback with MPlayer, whereas MPD reads data from the disk in 262k chunks. Maybe a buffer somewhere is being emptied faster than it fills when using MPD, compared to MPlayer. MPD's configuration file has an entry #buffer_before_play "10%" so I uncommented this line, and increased the value to 20%. buffer_before_play "20%" So far, so good, music is playing perfectly. I realise that other people who've experienced similar problems with sound may not be using MPD, but this may help them find a similar solution in their setup. [opensuse] Change Pulseaudio to default flat-volumes=no

Hello users, I'd like to ask the users here what would they think about changing Pulseaudio's default flat-volumes=yes to flat-volumes=no, to prevent apps like VLC or Amarok or the sound notification popup from modyfing the master sound level on your openSUSE distro. So if I set master to 50% it stay's at 50% and doesn't change when I change Amarok's volume to 100% or 20% for example. That would mean that 100% from Amarok = 50% from master. I am running this right now and it's better than having all the volumes jump up and being very annoying. My audio setup includes two sound cards, a Xonar DX one with Logitech's 5500 speakers (analog 5.1) and a NVIDIA gfx one (HDMI stereo to my monitor). I'd like you guys to express your user opinion about this change, if you think it helps you guys have a better audio session on your openSUSE distro. As per Comment11 [1] in the bug report[2] about the issue, Takashi Iwai suggests to ask the ML first about the change, and if it's wanted enough here then we may get a change upstream also. [opensuse] Photo editing software on Linux - new option?

Generally the RAW image editing options on Linux are quite limited. Over in the Windows and Mac world, you have some really nice tools like Lightroom. Linux has DarkTable which is pretty good, but still lacks a bit. Today I stumbled onto Corel AfterShot Pro. I know, commercial software, but... they produce a Linux native version with both RPM and DEB builds. They have a 30 day trial so you can test it out. I've got it installed in openSUSE on KDE4 and it's working very well... Thought this might be interesting to the amateur photographers here. [opensuse] Freshclam: ERROR: Verification: Can't verify database integrity

Hi, since a couple of hours, freshclam constantly fails with "ERROR: Verification: Can't verify database integrity" after downloading main.cvd, no matter from which mirror it downloads the data. It also complains about clamd being outdate (0.97.8 vs. 0.98.1). [opensuse] Restore filesystem without losing data?

An external hard disk of mine became corrupted, and in an effort to save the data on it I dd'd it to another hard disk. Both disks were formatted in Yast (openSUSE 13.1) with a single ext4 partition. But after using dd, now the filesystem is gone from the second disk, though otherwise the partition table appears to be intact, and cat and grep show at least some of the data. I had run `e2fsck -b 32768 -c' on the first disk when the problem first appeared (it was unmountable), but that seemed to make things worse, so I'm reluctant to try it on the second disk, unless someone convinces me I used it wrong and tells me the right way. Or is there another way to restore the filesystem without losing the data? On my newly upgraded 13.1 system, iscsi doesn't automatically mount the previously configured drives. Not a bad guess, but because this was an upgrade the interfaces retained their old sensible names. :-) I have updated the bugreport, I misinterpreted what was happening earlier. The old sysvinit-script appears to have been converted to two new systemd service units: iscsi.service and iscsid.service.
