[opensuse] zypper refuses to update some software

I switched from zypper dup to sypper up a few months ago, and lately I've been getting a long list of packages that won't be updated. Some of them have been in this message for weeks (I update a couple of times a week), and look pretty important to me. I have such a really long list during zypper update as well. I checked almost every packet in that "will NOT be installed" list; these are all packages from other OBS repositories or packman where I deliberately did not switch to them, but use the original package from 11.4 resp. 11.4 update repository. E.g., I use the repository openSUSE:/Tools/openSUSE_11.4/ to get OBS. It has a more current apache2 than the one in the 11.4 update repository. So, with each zypper up I get told that a whole bunch of apache2 packages will not get installed. Well, I know that: After all I decided that I won't switch wholeheartedly to openSUSE-Tools, but use that repo just for obs and not for apache2 and haveged. Packman is similar; I want it only for audio/video and not for the rest of packages that they provide. What I would really like to have: A zypper or zypp.conf option "don't list non-updateable packages caused by irrelevant vendor changes" in the "will NOT be installed" list at zypper update. Irrelevant here means: The package would change vendor and all its dependencies could be installed. Then the admin probably didn't install it by choice. As a further example, a relevant change that should be still listed: A package cannot be updated because one of its dependencies would have to change vendor to do the update. That's of interest, since here admin actions are probably needed. Currently, I have to do the dependency analysis to distinguish these two cases myself, and also haven't yet found good tools in the zypper framework that tells me concisely "why could something not be installed". [opensuse] tumbleweed dup wants to downgrade packages

Hi, I have been using Tumbleweed for months now, but I haven't updated in the last few weeks. Today, after zypper ref, zypper dup --from Tumbleweed, besides all the packages which need upgrade, and few changing vendor to Tumbleweed, 89 were marked for downgrade??? It shows 143 packages to upgrade. at the same time zypper up shows 168 packages to upgrade - much more than tumbleweed. [opensuse] Prblem with 'recently used'

I'm running KDE4.7 out of Factory but this was in 4.6 as well If I start a program from the kickoff menu it appears afterwards in the 'recently used', But only for that session. If I log off and back on, the items from the previous session are gone. What's there is a collection from back when.... Oh, and its only the programs. The recently used documents part works fine. I'm resuming that this is maintained in memory for the session and written to disk on log off. But that doesn't seem to happen. [opensuse] total system crash

Hello, I have a new hard drive that I just put on an old pc. I am experimenting around with things, and this is the sequence of what has happened. - first, I installed suse 11.4 and ran it ok for a few days. Had some problems with the monitor and networking. - I installed windows xp in place of suse 11.4, over-writing the hard drive with windows xp files. I needed to check some things. - I reinstalled suse 11.4 and again it ran ok once. On the install I wiped over completely all the windows xp files (using the suse installation utility) - the next day I brought my computer to a tech store to purchase a new motherboard. Before the purchase, we turned it on to boot up to suse 11.4 from the hard drive, and it would not boot up. It said "error loading boot system" or something like that. It did not make it anywhere even near loading anything from the hard drive, as if the hard drive failed. This was only the 2nd time that I powered up the pc after re-installing suse 11.4. - I installed the new motherboard (to get more memory) and again tried to boot from the hard drive, and it would not boot from the hard drive - I booted from the cd and went to re-install suse completely again. It ran through the whole setup sequence and did not indicate any errors. I did a complete re-install from the beginning. It performed the initial re-boot as part of the install sequence and brought up KDE. There was a problem with my video driver or something, as my screen only showed a series of horizontal lines of alternating green white and black colors. There was nothing readable. - I did a ctrl-alt-f2 and brought up the terminal window, but I didn't really know what to do from there because I am not really familiar with the commands. At this point I thought my only problem was the video driver. - I powered off the pc. - later I tried to boot up again, and again I got the same error as before "error loading boot system" and it did not get close to loading linux at all. That is the way it is now when I try to boot up from the hard drive. - I put in the install disk again and went to "rescue system". I typed in "root" as the login with a blank password, and got a terminal command. That is where I am now. I can get into the rescue system but not much else. I can't imagine that my hard drive has failed, as it is only 1 week old. I think that when I installed windows xp on it, microsoft did something to prevent me from installing another system over the top of xp, and now I can't access anything. I remember on the setup having 3 partitions, as swap, a root, and a home. I had the max size on all 3, I think they were 2gb, 20gb, and 465gb or something like that. I have a 500gb drive. So, can someone help me first of all to get my directories back? I only know enough to get into the rescue system. I don't know the commands to use from the rescue system, or what to do from there. If I need to provide any more information, please tell me what commands I need to use to find it out. Thanks in advance! Hi all mmmm kmail2 is proving fun (or not). Anyone know the resolutions to these ? 1. Always having to enter a password for Ankonadi Resource to access kwallet. (every time i log in) 2. [opensuse] local parallel oprinter in openSUSE 11.4

Hello: I would like to configure my kyocera parallel printer in YaST, openSUSE 11.4. If I go to Harwdware>Printer in YaST the "Printer Configurations" window opens but it only says: "There is no print queue." If I click "Add" the "Add New Printer Configuration" window opens which says: "No connections. Try 'Detect More' or use the 'Connection Wizard'." Detect more does not find anything. Clicking 'Connection Wizard' opens 'Connection Wizard' window. Under "Directly connected device>Parallel port" nothing is listed. What can I do with this? openSUSE 11.2 could find an configure the printer perfectly right away on the very same hardware. I will try sending this again with a subject line that is a little more descriptive: Hi all, Ok next problem. I have a new motherboard that the manual says it uses "Integrated programmable Shader model 3.0 DirectX 9 graphics processor" My screen looks just like a series of green, black, and white horizontal lines. There is nothing remotely decipherable about it. I verified the problem is not the monitor itself by plugging in a different monitor which I am using on another system and I got the same screen - lots of horizontal lines. I ran the lspci command and here are the results: 00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025/nForce 630n] (rev a2) I used midnight commander to view the /var/log/xorg.0.log file. It is a really long file. I managed to figure out how to mount a usb drive and copy the file into that so that I could bring the file over here to my laptop and email it. I will paste a copy of it in my first reply. So, where do I go from here? If I can get the video card working, then I can set up thunderbird and email from that computer, instead of hand copying everything here on my laptop, and then troubleshooting will be easier. I am having a problem getting USB to work with memory sticks, or a USB to serial port. When I plug in the USB to serial port I get a message from system which says "syslog disabling IEQ18. [opensuse] Xdmcp woes

I have a new -64 box and its running Fedor-15 very nicely thank you ;-) The bummer is that - well apart from fighting with systemd - it has a grotty old conventional CRT monitor. BLEH! So I've tied enabling Xdmcp on my widescreen laptop which is running openSuSe and on the Fedora box. Both are on the same LAN segment. The login screen on the CRT can see - Ctrl-R to display list of remotes - the laptop but when I try logging in from the CRT to the laptop I just get a black screen. The login screen on the doens't behave the same of the openSuSe laptop. The Ctrl-R bring up the list but a mouseover onto it shut it down. The list only has the laptop. Not the Fedora box. This has let me a bit perplexed. I have a working kmail2 with still some snags. One is that in the header of the folder list, KMail Folders I found three copies of a message from yesterday. Those messages cannot be deleted and or removed with e.g. Update folders. They do not interrupt the use of kmail but I would like to clean them out of the main-folder. It is a really long file. Many lines begin with GEForce, and many other lines begin with NOUVEAU. The NOUVEAU lines have resolution and frequency numbers on them. I don't know if that is useful information. If there is a particular line I need to look for let me know. Hi all, I have bought a Asus PCE-N13 802.11b/g/n Wifi PCI-Express Adapter, with "Linux Support" printed on the package, and info in the internet that it works for Linux. It does work, but I can only get 54 MB/s out of it. System: openSUSE 11.4, Kernel Driver: rt2860sta, Model: RaLink RT2860 I had aHP Compaq Presario CQ56-103SGtoday, with a 802.11b/g/n WLan. It operated with openSUSE 11.4 according to NetworkManager with 150 MB/s on the very same RT-Link Model No. TL-WR941N WLan. How can the RaLink RT2860 be configured to get 300 MB/s? I see in the HWCL that it was tested as only using /b/g. :-( (http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Network_%28Wireless%29#With_known_chipsets - "Tested with 64 bits. Only B/G works, See internet for details on getting N to work with Linksys WMP600N " - I found nothing) Can someone suggest a good Card for use with openSUSE and Linux in general? [opensuse] Associating an image with a Desktop icon

I have a Java applications which I use frequently, and for which I have placed hard links on the Desktop, to make them easier to start. The icons are generic, and therefore confusin, and I would like to replace them a recognizable images. I have such images in png and other formats, but it is not clear to me how to assign them to the applications. [opensuse] suse 11.4 and kde3 - part 2

my own little project with 11.4 and kde3 is still alive and well. on the desktop, i finally got virtual box to run, after i downloaded a bunch more of kde3 shtuff from the "official" site. have not run a vm yet, but vbox seems to be very happy w. the way things lay. don't know which kde3 app did it, but i would be willing to list all the kde3 components installed. On the laptop, i tried oh about 4 diff. versions of 11.4, including a kde4, gnome and xfce graphics front end, alas, none of them could make my bc4312 dell wireless ( the machine is a dell vostro1710) do anything. and the /var/log messages kept saying the card just died!!!!. finally, with kde3 running, i deleted /var/lib/firmware/ b43 firmware, b43firmware-legacuy and also b43-wl something. then, i mounted my 11.1 /var/lib/firmware directory and copied the b43firmware and b43firmweare-legacy folders into their respective spot in my 11.4 system, rebooted and now wicd 1.7 connects to the home wireless immediately, that's something like 15 out of 15 tries, after reboots to windoze xp and suse 11.1 and back to 11.4 randomly interspersed within :) sooo, suse devs, please take another look at the bcm43/b43 drivers, sometim is amiss big time. and the "old" drivers just seem to work...( almost as well as either gubuntu or kubuntu, both of which were tried in the same partition.) d. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

[opensuse] Help with Kmai2 in 4.7

hi all I'm having a real disaster with kmail2. 1. I accidentally deleted my local folders in the kmail2 Accounts config and now kmail2 crashes with an error "Failed to retrieve akonadi resource" (or something like that). It does not give me a chance to re-add it. 2. Tried to modify an existing POP account (also in kmail Accounts config) but it does not allow me to edit the password for the login id to the POP server. [opensuse] Plasma-Desktop crashing

I recently got a new laptop (a ThinkPad X220 with Intel i915 video card) and am running into a problem where KDE plasma-desktop will crash periodically. The bottom bar disappears and the background goes black (there aren't windows open over it) and after a second or so it starts back up again and seems to work fine for a while until it happens again (maybe every 10 minutes. I have seen similar behavior with SuSE 11.1 (I think), but in that case my home partition was full - there is plenty of space now. I am running fully updated SuSE 11.4 KDE Base version 4.6.0-6.6.2-x86_64 from OpenSUSE-11.4-11.4-0 kdebase4-workspace is 4.6.0-10.15.1-x86_64 I have looked around on this, and can't seem to find anything, but I am not really sure what I am looking for. I have turned off all desktop effects. Logs can be found at the bottom of this message. [opensuse] configuring my monitor
