The 'swapon' command will tell me how much swap is being used. Is there anything that will tell me what is using swap, what programs, processes etc are using it or what the contents of swap is? -- "Be brave enough to live creatively. [opensuse] Apache 11.4 apache2 write logs as root?

Hello all, I have encountered an anomaly on apache2 on OpenSuSE 11.4 64 bit. All the logs file are written as root in /var/log/apache, but the configuration is the same as OpenSuSE 11.3.... what is changed? And another thing strange is another system, with OpenSuSE 11.3, it writes some logs as root, some other as wwwrun.www. Apache is running as wwwrun.www.... Any hint about this? I have tried already to copy all the configuration from the previous web server, and it still continues to write logs as root.root.... I plugged an Acer Iconia A500 Android tablet into my Opensuse 11.4 and it was more or less ignored. The log shows that it was seen, and mtp-probe was run and gave me a long string, and stated that the device was an mtp device. But that is all that happens. Hi, My ongoing research in preparation for my first use of an SSD has led me to NILFS and I have a few questions: 1) Is it supported for openSUSE 11.4? Web search suggests it is, but only indirectly (as far as I can find) in the form of mentions of the nilfs-utils package for 11.4. 2) Is NILFS a good choice for an SSD? 3) Is NILFS stable and reliable? 4) Are there caveats?If so, what are they? 5) Other questions I should be asking or answering? Hi, My next question relating to using SSDs on openSUSE is whether they enable or implement the so-called Idle Time Garbage Collection used by SandForce SSD chips (such as the SandForce 1222 chips on the RevoDrive x2 card I bought). Nothing I've found has made it clear whether this is something that requires OS / filesystem support, but the descriptions I've found (which have been very sketchy) suggest filesystem support is required. Hello: When my system (openSUSE 11.2) starts to boot it shows a line "doing fast boot" or something like this. I googled but could not find any information regarding fast boot except from some empty directories like https://mirror.umoss.org/opensuse/repositories/devel%3A/playground%3A/fastb… Could someone, please, give a link where I could find some information (what it is, how to configure) on fast boot? [opensuse] Cannot connect to Belkin N150 wireless router

Hi I have just bought a Belkin N150 wireless router, but I am unable to connect using the wireless network from openSUSE 11.4 with KNetworkManager. I am using WPA2 encryption with dynamic network address. On the router the DHCP server is active and I am able to connect using the wireline from openSUSE 11.4. On Win7 I am able to connect using the wireless network. Hi, I'm currently trying to install 11.4 via VNC on a Xen host. I already did that up to 11.1 by copying the 11.4 kernel and (install-)initrd to the Dom0 and use them from the vm configuration like this: kernel="/root/xenboot/vmlinuz-xen-x86_64-11.4" ramdisk="/root/xenboot/initrd-xen-x86_64-11.4" My extra command line is: extra=" install=http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.4/repo/oss vnc=1 vncpassword=XXXXXX hostip=1.2.3.4/28 gateway=2.3.4.5 nameserver=3.4.5.6" When I try SSH instead of VNC that seems to work (at least I get an SSH connection but haven't tried the actual installation). But VNC doesn't seem to start up. I cannot connect to the VNC server with any port definition I've tried. (nmap was unable to find a port too). I'm not sure if the problem is caused by that Xen workaround or if there is any issue with normal VNC installation on 11.4? I'm actually wondering if I got the right initrd and if it includes everything I need as installation base. [opensuse] Host name & DHCP

Hi, Here at the office I have a dynamic DHCP/DNS setup. With this I mean a host gets it's IP-addres via dhcp, and dhcp sends the IP-address and the host-name to the DNS-server. Works fine for my Windows clients. Now I installed my new OpenSuse 11.4 laptop, and when I look at the dhcp-leases, I see no name for my IP-address. And no entry in DNS. I had this also with my old laptop running OS 11.1. What am I missing ? I set the domain-name and the host-name of my laptop in the network configuration. I am running Networkmanager for my network-setup. Thanks for any info. [opensuse] Automounting esata disk

Hi, I have an e-sata disk connected to my laptop, to store data I don't always need when I'm not at the office. What is the most convenient way to mount that device's partitions ? For the moment I log in as root and mount it manually. I'm studying autofs to simplify things. Are there other ways ? P.S. I knew about usb-3, but until a few days back I thought e-sata was faster. So I purchased a laptop with e-sata, but no usb-3. Usb-3 would have made things easyer. [opensuse] Why don't Libre and Open Office Merge now OO is with Apache?

Guys, Why don't LibreOffice and OpenOffice merge now that Oracle has ceded the OO code to the Apache Foundation? Splitting developer talent between the two and introducing format incompatibilities between the two will kill one or the other over time. The document foundation is open to the idea, anybody got the scoop from the Apache side? I have had nothing but grief from the fork. Both LO and OO work fine, but when I can't edit an OO document in LO and have it open again in OO without a 'save as' to an older OO format in LO -- something is wrong. The community doesn't need this type of distraction if wider OS desktop acceptance is the goal. If anybody know any more on the apache side, I'd welcome the thoughts. -- David C. [opensuse] GNOME+Compiz+11.4=Texture Mapping Failure

I started seeing this issue in 11.2 a few days before upgrading to 11.4, and it still persists in 11.4. System is an HP Pavilion Slimline with an ATI GeForce 6150 LE video controller that uses shared memory. No setting in the BIOS for the amount of memory to share, though. Running GNOME2 with Compiz, I can start 3-4 windows (depending on what's in them, if I open multiple GNOME terminals I can get 5 open before the problem occurs) and then the windows start coming up with no contents. The contents are there (for example, if I open a term and tell it to echo the bell, I hear the bell), but it seems the texture mapping is failing. Sometimes this happens taking a window from windowed to full-screen. If I disable compiz, I don't see the problem, so it seems to be related to the way compiz maps stuff to the windows. I'd prefer to continue using compiz, though, as I use the enhanced zoom plugin on occasions where I've left my glasses in another part of the house. I applied the recent updates to the xorg server, and that doesn't seem to have changed anything. Prior to the final updates on 11.2, I didn't see this problem at all, and I had hoped it would clear up when I moved to 11.4, unfortunately, it didn't. Thanks for any tips/pointers/advice. Hi all, can somebody help me with a script using mp3info that will only print out number of files in a directory and number of files with a bit rate of less than 192k. I look after a community radio station and a presenter is modifying the station music collection, I need to catch this guy in the act. I want to run this script from cron before and after his show and send it to a smb printer in the office. The music library sits on a Linux box running samba. Any help would be greatly appreciated. peer-io.c: In function ‘tr_evbuffer_write’: peer-io.c:285:31: error: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type make[1]: *** [peer-io.o] Error 1 --- This one REALLY has me curious as to how it was build for the distribution, since I have been unable to build transmission from their source repo for some time due to something along the lines of (if not the exact same) error I'm getting from the 11.4 package. I have a system that seems to be fully updated to 11.4, and installed the appropriate build-requires. Yet another rpmbuild -bb fails with errors indicating it never should have been buildable to a binary in the first place. In it's simplest form, this merely means the build environment seems to include things that aren't obvious to someone building the packages on a standard 11.4 system.... [opensuse] how to remove New Activity from Desktop

Hi Everyone. I have a perfectly working kde but at the top in the centre of each screen there is a 'New Activity' button. How do I get rid of it? I think it used to be a cachew because the cahew isn't there now.
