[opensuse] KDE devs [ Classic (3.5) & 4 ] Great Job, Both Desktop Interfaces Look Great... Much Improved

Devs, Just dropping a note to say great job with both KDE Classic (3.5.10-51) and KDE 4.3.95 (44beta). KDE Classic is near flawless and KDE4 is much improved between 4.3.4 and 4.4 beta (from Factory). From a user prospective, it is obvious that a great amount of effort has been directed to both desktops and it is much appreciated. The striking difference in 44beta is the actual addition of kde4 tools (like the "Add Widget" drag&drop implementation, etc..) which for the first time look like what must have been envisioned when kde4 was conceived, but were not completed or ready for release until now. As more of the kde4 features are implemented, the 'vision' of what kde4 will be becomes clearer and why kde4 behaves in certain ways now makes more sense -- much of which has been indiscernible to date. There is some cool stuff here. There are a couple of regressions of note: (1) File 'Save/Save As' behavior for jpg files has regressed to jpeg. Following the bugzilla discussions, the plan was to have the 'save/save as' dialog default to saving a '.jpg' to prevent the conflict and incompatibility with the billions of existing .jpg files. 4.3.4 had corrected this. 4.3.95 has regressed to defaulting to .jpg. What's the story? (2) plasmoids for cpu & network monitors - still no way to set graph color (Anders, I know you told me how this works, but I cannot get it to work in 4.3.95 at all). (3) plasmoids for cpu & network monitors - graph lines disappear on widget resize and there is no way to get them back. Not monumental by any stretch, but they need to be fixed as 44beta moves forward. All in all, 4.3.95 is a good step forward for kde4 and the look and feel clearly show a great deal of work has been done on the desktop. It is a great daily driver and for anyone running 11.0+, the install is as simple as adding the following 3 repositories, opening yast software management and choosing 'Package -> Update All Packages -> Update if a newer version exists' and clicking 'Accept'. There were no new dependency issues with the update. repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSUSE_11.0/ repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.0_KDE4_Factory_Desktop/ repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Playground/openSUSE_11.0_KDE4_Factory_Desktop/ Also, for the work that has been done on KDE Classic (KDE 3.5.10), thank you Will and the rest! It really shows. KDE Classic is in such good shape that for older boxes that don't really run KDE4 well, having KDE 3.5.10 for the desktop is worth it's weight in gold. Further, with the newer decorations available for KDE3 (crystal, bespin, smooth, glow, system++ and the deKorator themes), the interface is not far from the kde4 look. I do have another issue with both kde's and compiz that appeared after yesterday's updates in addition to the fact there is not compiz-kde4 compatible with kde 4.3.X (the existing compiz-kde4 is for 4.0.4), but I'll include that in a separate post. [opensuse] I did it again... Found another lightweight WM I like! pekwm in the X11/windowmanager repo

Guys, Checking out windowmanagers I like for older hardware and as a simple diversion as kde4 goes through its growing pains, I've added another WM to my short list: 'pekwm'. Weird name but great little desktop. Pekwm is somewhat of a second generation openbox and is a fully functional themeable WM. It is best used with a standalone panel like tint2 or bmpanel (in the same repo). The total desktop size is only a few hundred K do donwload takes about 10 seconds. It provides a session file so launching pekwm is a simple as clicking the pekwm session and typing in your password and your done. Menus are controlled through ~/.pekwm/menu and anyone with a first grade level of pattern recognition skill can instantly deduce the format. The default menu will more than get you going, and with about 3 minutes of editing and adding your favorite apps, you have all you apps at your mousetip. The other startup file you will want to visit for automatic wallpaper setup, panel setup, and systray app start is the ~/.pekwm/start file. It is blank to begin with having nothing but a short help section commented at the top. It is purely a bash script file for you to load your startup files with. The only thing you need to do is make it executable to have it run after .xinit finishes. I did a two-minute version that (1) sets the background, (2) starts xscreensaver, (3) loads the panel, and if the panel loads, then (4) starts basket and (5) knemo in the systray. (yes, file-roller will handle the cpio rpm source extraction for you) The problem with the theme package is that some of the themes listed actually contain archives of several theme instead of just the theme files, so if you just install it, 20-30% of the themes are never unpackaged correctly. [opensuse] wine and DOSMEM_MapDosLayout Need full access to the first megabyte for DOS mode

Hello: I would like to install an old Windows 98 application in wine. When I try to run wine INSTALL.EXE I get: err:dosmem:DOSMEM_MapDosLayout Need full access to the first megabyte for DOS mode I found at winehq forums that setting vm.mmap_min_addr=0 (by running /sbin/sysctl vm.mmap_min_addr=0) fixes this problem on ubuntu, but it have not had any effect on my system. (I've even added "vm.mmap_min_addr = 0" to /etc/sysctl.conf file and rebooted the computer.) I have openSUSE 11.2 and wine-1.1.28-2.3. Any idea on how I could fix this? [opensuse] BASH Completion seems Confused at time on 11.0 - Anybody else seeing this.

Guys, Just a note. In the past month or two, bash completion seems to get confused at times. (the tab-completion) I'll type part of a path in and hit tab and nothing, tab-tab-tab still nothing. Check spelling -> OK, backspace over one level in the path, tab-tab still nothing. Back up to the first level of the path and tab -- works, first couple of letters of same 2nd dir -- works, and continues working down the tree. I can't remember ever having consistent (not my fat fingers) problems with bash completion before. It's strange to have to backspace over what you just typed to get back to the first 2-4 letters before bash completion starts working again. I get no errors anywhere. [opensuse] Hal & Policy Kit?

Hello SuSE people. Running 11.2 with KDE4.3.5. I have several different OS's on my machine and several different partitions which are common to them all. ie. /datastorage, /mediastorage, /backup etc which I can access from each OS. Each of those are listed in my 11.2 fstab. I had the same setup when I tried 11.1. I am unable to mount them in 11.2 getting the message "Hal Device Volume Permission denied. /dev/hda? is listed in fstab but refuses to mount". I was able to get around that in 11.1 (something aboutPolicy Kit) but darned if I can remember what it was that I did. Would some kind soul out there jog the gray matter and put me on the right track? [opensuse] Bespin - The Mysterious

Listmates, Bespin Styles (as opposed to Bespin Window Decorations) can render excellent looking window attributes for the kde4 desktop, but getting to the right setup can be somewhat trial-and-error due to the hinting bespin draws from the underlying color scheme. My first few attempts, I just punted and went back to Nitrogen or Ozone or Emerald. However, when I had a bit of time I went back and mounted an assault against bespin one again. After a bit of hand-to-hand combat, a small victory or sorts was won. The color choice is limited to ~6 colors drawn from the underlying theme and is obviously important. (you can turn off hinting but it's not recommended for starting out) Through the fight, the setting that were the most sensitive to the ultimate look were: Windows -> UNO -> draw combined head on main window Windows -> Modal Dialogs -> Invert Colors Windows -> Modal Dialogs -> Opacity (set greater than 85%, preferred 96%) Views -> Alternate Rows -> Level (set 50% or greater) In addition the 'Position Indicators' slide bar that sets the appearance of the scroll bar makes a huge difference in how your scroll bar and resulting decoration will look. The outcome however is worth the effort. [opensuse] latest kernel update problems

Hi . Ran zypper patch last night got a kernel update and a bunch of other stuff which is fine apart from that it has screwed up the laptop now . A Compaq Presario V5030 AMD 64 Turion 1.5Gb Ram ATI graphics Running OpenSUSE 11.2 X86_64 """""Please note as someone is bound to take no notice and try bouncing me out the Sig on this mail IS NOT from the affected machine I have to make this point cus some people seem to like taking no bread Poltice of what they been told"""""" Before last nights updates i had it booting straight into graphics mode no problem now it's back to needing to go to runlevel 3 log in as root then init 5 login as user . [opensuse] Kopete won't use webcam for MSN

Hi all, I'm using kopete-4.3.98-126.5 under KDE 4.4 RC3 and just today I wanted to do a video-conference with it for the very first time. It was odd to me that I can see the "Invite to view your Webcam" and "View Webcam" only with the Yahoo! Messenger contacts but such options won't show up for MSN... So, is there any reason for that? Am I doing something wrong? Using aMSN the video-conf works like a charm though... Any ideas? [opensuse] How to query time with ntpd?

Hello: I used to use ntpdate to query the time of a given time server occasionally. 'ntpdate -q <time.server.address>' showed the difference between the system and server time. Now in openSUSE 11.2 ntpdate is not available anymore, it is replaced by ntpd. How can I use ntpd on command line to check the difference between server and system time without adjusting the latter one (ie. imitate -q option of ntpdate)? I have read the ntpd man page but could not find out myself how to do it.
