A large retailer is offering a Seagate 250 mb backup hard drive at a fair price, including various programs for backups etc, for windows only. I know very litle about backups except copying files to a cd/dvd. How would I backup Ubuntu and other Linux's to such a drive? [opensuse] loss of sound after nx session

Installs on both system:11.1, sound on client: pulseaudio, and the nx RPM's from NoMachine on host and client. I have noticed that when I end an NX session into my other system that I have no sound on the system originating system. Logging out and back in clears the issue, but I'd like to not have to do that. Has anyone else experienced this? I've done some searching of bugzilla and nothing matching sound + nx

Here is what I do (using Firefox): I point my browser to http://bugzilla.novell.com/ this causes a redirect to https://bugzilla.novell.com/index.cgi I click "Login" which gives me a page asking for "Username" and "Password". I enter my username (not my email address) and my password and I hit enter. So far this has never failed to work unless during a novell maintenance outage which are pretty rare. [opensuse] unable to login normal user under KDE4

I succeeded tp install opensuse 11.1 without problems, but this was under KDE3.5 . However, when trying to install it with the new KDE4 I am not able to login as a normal user. Logging in as root succeeds all right, but as a normal user I can only login in a console. Trying to login under X fails: the screen vanishes for a second or so, and comes back with the same login- screen. Anyone a suggestion how to login under X. and/or a suggestion how to solve this? [opensuse] ping and telnet solves hostname to different IP addresses?

Using Linux for 7 years this is the first time I see such thing happening, the same host name resolve to different IP address almost at the same time, one by ping the other by telnet. How could this happen? Hello everybody, I really like tellico and I use it to manage my CD collection. I especially like tellico for the feature to import new CDs just by querying some cddb-server. In recent tellico versions that are available from openSUSE repositories (e.g. 1.9SVN from the KDE Desktop Factory repository) this does not work any more. In the 1.9 version the menu item is greyed out, in the 1.3.5 version the feature just does not work any more. There also is no appropriate data source available in the tellico settings :-( Has this feature been cut by openSUSE packagers, is it an upstream issue or am I just missing something? Wow, wow, and... wow! I've been using SuSE / OpenSuSE since about 1996. I've tried Knoppix, Redhat, Fedora, Ubuntu, heck - even PC-BSD and Desktop-BSD. Through it all SuSE / OpenSuSE has been my favorite. I run two laptops and my desktop at home with 11.1; I run my primary workstation at work on 11.1 64 bit. I primarily use Ubuntu as a rescue system. See, we have many profs at this University that think it's their right to have admin access on the machines in their offices - Which usually means they hose those windows systems pretty quickly and require re-imaging. I don't know how many times I've had to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick, pop in a blank DVD, fire up K3B, and burn a copy of their profile prior to reimaging. I just wish it was as easy to create a bootable OpenSuSE USB stick =( I use OpenSuSE 11.1 at work to frequenty rdesktop to windows machines and to vnc and ssh to macs. All in all, I love Linux and OpenSuSE in particular. I wish I had the talent to be one of the people producing it - I think they are doing an awesome job. I understand that Linux, as a whole, is a developing technology - which is hard to remember when, for the most part, my Linux systems have been as reliable or more reliable than any windows or OS X system that I've had to work on. Hi all, I have a HP Pavillion dv2872br notebook witch is getting extremely hot when I encode some mp3 (100% CPU usage), and it's fan is never in full speed (it's not as noisy as when using a lot of CPU in Vista). Is it possible to correct the fan speed in Opensuse 11.1 x86-64? Please help me!! Hi, Has anyone succeeded in getting TomTom to be recognized in Windows XP running in VirtualBox? It is recognized as a USB mass storage unit, but it won't start. (Code 10). USB sticks and all that work OK. TomTom people (surprise!) know nothing. Opensuse 11.0, VBox 2.4.4, Windows XP SP3. [opensuse] Logitech Clearchat Wireless headset volume issues...

I just connected a new Logitech Clearchat Wireless headset to my main system (running openSUSE 11.1). Theoretically this headset should work "out of the box"... and it kind of does.. but I'm having some issues that basically make this headset unusable in the long run.... The headset was immediately identified when I connected it and turned it on, but: 1. There is no mic volume control in any mixer... KMix, alsamixer etc etc. This is an issue because the mic volume is too low (ie something like 2 on a scale of 100), and needs to be set much much higher. 2. The sound only works on the left side (as if the balance is set 100% to the left). None of the various alsa utils provide balance controls for the speaker output on this headset. I've gone into YaST > Hardware > Sound, and added/tinkered with the USB Generic sound card. This works to raise lower the speaker volumes on the headset, but there are no mic volumes or balance controls there either. As a control, I have a Logitech Clearchat USB headset (the wired one) and it's working 100%, with proper mic volumes/controls etc. Any ideas? If you use htop you can tell it to show individual threads (you probably can with top too but htop is a little easier imho). [opensuse] mounting a Solaris UFS disk on a SuSE 11.1 system

I am in the process of converting my home data server from Solaris to SuSE 11.1. I have asked on the OT list for some opinions of favorite filesystems and have already got some answers. The one really important thing that I still don't know how to do is mount the Solaris UFS data disk on the SuSE system in order to copy the data to the SuSE system. I have done a little Google searching and have found a few ideas but each is different and am not sure which (if any) is right. Does anyone here have experience with mounting a Solaris UFS disk on a Linux system? If so, what is the correct mount string to do it? [opensuse] ATI video flashing/strobing?

OK, this is really getting to be a problem... I know, I know, never ever ever buy a computer with an ATI videocard.. sigh... Anyway, I have a bookshelf computer I am using as my media center.. stats... Video card: ATI Radeon 1200 Driver: 2.1.8494 (from standard 11.1 repositories) OS: openSUSE 11.1 (just did a full wipe and clean install) with KDE4.3 RC1 Display: Toshiba 32" LCD at 1024x768@60Hz I installed the drivers via the repositories, and then used sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx to "set it up" (including setting the Display to LCD 1024x768@60Hz). Reboot, and things are working using the fglrx driver. These are settings (and setup process) that I used with my 11.0 install that was working OK-ish up until I reinstalled everything to move to 11.1 this morning. Now the problem. On starting up KDE4 on the green KDE4 startup screen, the screen strobes or flashes until the desktop is loaded (only a few seconds). I can live with this, but... on starting up an application like XBMC, the screen strobes and flashes for at least 15 to 20 seconds. Sometimes things settle down and XBMC will work... other times on starting XBMC, it will keep strobing making XBMC unusable. XBMC is just one of many applications that will mess up the display (ie strobing)... example starting the KDE Control Center and picking a random setup icon.. say... Computer Administration > Display (to set the power management for example) will cause the screen to strobe wildly for a few seconds. Any ideas on this one? [opensuse] digikam 0.9.4 can't delete photos on my camera

Hi folks, On openSUSE 11.1 (32-bit), digikam 0.9.4 (that's the KDE3 version) throws errors when I want to delete photos on my camera. My camera is a Canon IXUS 800, connected in PTP mode via USB. Every second photo I get an error dialog that tells me that this photo cannot be deleted (and it isn't deleted). But that photo can be deleted on the next try -- but again, then every 2nd photo is not deleted. So every "Delete all" action just deletes half of the photos. On openSUSE 10.3, digikam 0.9.3 works fine in the same situation. I can delete all photos on the camera. On both versions, spurious error messages are output that the first image on the camera that is shown in the camera preview dialog is not readable. (It is, I'm able to download it with both versions of digikam.) What could I do to make that work again? If nobody on this list can help me, where would be a good mailing list or other avenue where I could find help to solve that problem?
