Hello everybody, I was wandering what has happened to bash-completion? It is a very usefull tool, saves me a LOT of typing, but I see it is gone in 11.2RC? Is there any way to return it? [opensuse] Printing problems with openSUSE 11.0/x64

I'm having problems getting my Espon ActionLaser 1500 to print properly. Dmesg shows this about the printer port: parport0: PC-style at 0x278 (0x678) [PCSPP,TRISTATE] lp0: using parport0 (polling). parport0: PC-style at 0x278 (0x678), irq -32512, using FIFO [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP] parport0: irq -32512 in use, resorting to polled operation lp0: using parport0 (polling). parport0: PC-style at 0x278 (0x678) [PCSPP,TRISTATE] lp0: using parport0 (polling). parport0: PC-style at 0x278 (0x678), irq -32512, using FIFO [PCSPP,TRISTATE,COMPAT,ECP] parport0: irq -32512 in use, resorting to polled operation lp0: using parport0 (polling). I've tried using 0x378/IRQ7 and ox278/IRQ5 but for some reason I keep getting the above. YaST will print Hello World to the printer, but when I try to print nothing happens. I mean nothing. It doesn't show up in the que or anything. I'm at a loss. Any ideas? [opensuse] wifi for a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop

Hello I'm having trouble with a Dell Laptop Inspiron 6000. The WIFI seems to not work. Fist, when I did the installation it identified the wifi as eth0 and not ath0, which is different than my other installations. iwconfig identifies the device as follows ath0 radio off ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate:0 kb/s Tx-Power=off Sensitivity=8/0 Retry limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0 It shows up in yast as Name │IP Address ││ ││PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection│DHCP ││ ││BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX │DHCP ││ but iwlist fails stat46:~ # iwlist ath0 scanning ath0 No scan results There is wifi available (infact I'm posting from the wifi on my EEEPC) I spin around the net is not coming u with any solutions. Anyone have a clue as to what can be wrong? With our work we try to bridge a gap in the market. Logistic: For better logistic we have opened an new OBS Project called "medical". PROBLEM: when I run tar with software compression I get this error : gzip: stdout: Invalid argument HOW I TRY TO DO IT. #tar -cvpsPzf - /test_tar/ 2> suse11_1-$(date +'%Y-%m-%d').log > /dev/nst0 or #tar -cvpsPf - /test_tar/ 2> suse11_1-$(date +'%Y-%m-%d').log | gzip > /dev/nst0 WHAT IT WORKS #tar -cvpsPzf /dev/nst0 /test_tar And of course if I do not use softare compression (z removed) the problem line works OK #tar -cvpsPf - /test_tar/ 2> suse11_1-$(date +'%Y-%m-%d').log > /dev/nst0 I would like to do it this way because is very convenient to send the log file to standard error, so I avoid to have to run tar -t. Hardware compression works but for some reason I can not get close to the level of compression produced but software compression plus is often not very compatible among devices (in case mine caput) ref: opensuse 11.1 2.6.27.29-0.1-default tar 0.2.1.5-1294.pm.svn20090227-x86_64 gzip 1.3.12-68.38-x86_64 SONY SDX-420C, ATAPI TAPE drive. [opensuse] How do troubleshoot a Samba socket bind problem?

Hi - Boy am I getting a headache trying to understand Samba! I am using SuSE11.0. It appears that there is some sort of conflict going on with the ports that Samba uses, and I for the life of me cannot make heads or tails out of how to diagnose the problem. The log file for log.smbd is showing the following error messages whenever I restart the two smbd and nmbd services (from within SWAT) - [2009/10/23 19:12:27, 2] lib/interface.c:add_interface(337) added interface eth1 ip=192.168.2.100 bcast=192.168.2.255 netmask=255.255.255.0 [2009/10/23 19:12:28, 2] lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(1267) bind failed on port 445 socket_addr = 0.0.0.0. Error = Address already in use [2009/10/23 19:12:28, 2] lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(1267) bind failed on port 139 socket_addr = 0.0.0.0. Error = Address already in use [2009/10/23 19:12:28, 2] smbd/server.c:open_sockets_smbd(581) waiting for a connection >From what I have read on the internet, most suggestions imply that the samba servers are already running somehow and that some other instance of them has already attached to these two ports. That makes no sense to me because I am doing a restart on these servers which if common sense is right, that means the previous instances should be halted, detached from the ports and an new instance is started up... No??? I dunno and am quite confused if something else is happening... Another suggestion I found said to do a netstat -ap and grep for the port numbers 139 and 445 but that showed nothing. I did a bit of further research and found a hint suggesting I grep for netbios instead. Ok, but I dunno why I would have to know some magical name but when I did I got the following - \tcp 0 0 *:netbios-ssn *:* LISTEN 3711/smbd udp 0 0 192.168.2.10:netbios-ns *:* 2710/nmbd udp 0 0 *:netbios-ns *:* 2710/nmbd udp 0 0 192.168.2.1:netbios-dgm *:* 2710/nmbd udp 0 0 *:netbios-dgm *:* 2710/nmbd Hump! that was informative!!! So on a hunch I decided to use SWAT and stop both the smbd and nmbd services then ran the netstat command again, and as I might expect nothing showed up. So why, when I start these two services up, do I get these error messages about the Address already in use and bind failed on port... ? Gosh one would think there would be a tool of some kind that would easily answer such a question - i.e. Why is a port already in use when it shouldn't be? But perhaps like so many other error messages I keep encountering, this is a bad error message or a red herring of some kind? Can some kind soul lead me out of this mess? [opensuse] software.opensuse.org displaying in German?

Grrr... this is annoying... software.opensuse.org is displaying in German on me. I'm connecting from a German IP, but have my browser language preferences set to English. Anyone else see the "wrong" language? (ie a language other than the browser preference) Not only do I get the page all in German now (a language I cannot read), there is no apparent way to set things back to English. I've emailed the webmaster at opensuse.org about this... I dearly hope that someone hasn't done something really really stupid like.. dare I say it.. set up geolocation to "guess" the language of the user browsing to the site. Dear all, My new machine will have an ATI Sapphire HD 4730 video card on an ASUS P5Q-EM motherboard. Does anybody of you have some exprience with them (with openSUSE 11.1), especially with the video card? I did not find it in the hardware compatibily list. Albert Oszko
