Kind of defeats the purpose :-) and.. doesn't help anyway... as long as compositing is turned on and desktop effects are turned on, the desktop switches when you activate the mouse scroll on the desktop... regardless of Cube, Fade etc etc.. or no switching effect. I use it on my desktop, there it's fine.. it's only really a problem on the netbook combined with my fat fingers. AFAIR, SUSE adds local clock to its ntp sources, and thus ntp will have an available time source and will not die if the other time sources are not reachable. (I have my own ntp configs and can not check SUSE's default config.) A big problem at start up of xntpd and ntpd is that the mitigation algorithms are initially crippled in the interest of a fast start, and may not detect a falseticker and will happily sync to it if it is the first server that becomes available. In the SUSE case, the falseticker is the local clock, which may be more than 1000 secs off. Suppose that you have no network at first, and then add one. Then (maybe) four servers come available. After 5 polls, the truechimers will vote the false ticker off the island, and the system will now want to reset to the correct time, but since this is not the first sync, the 1000 second limit will come into play and ntpd will exit. This is an architectural issue; I don't know how to handle that problem for mobile systems. For all kind of configurations, one can find counter scenarios where it doesn't work. The basic premise of ntp is `always online' and doesn't take into account wild straying systems that are not regularly connected (and long enough to sync!) to the network. I happen to leave off local clocks in our ntp client configuration -- not on the ntp servers, but there one has to take care that the local clocks *must* be in a different stratum, otherwise this will create havoc. But that still gives problems in some cases, so YMMV. Configuring ntp properly is a minefield; it looks easy at first and is very difficult in the details. And it doesn't help that the documentation does not care for common cases. Wolfgang, do you know that there is some glitch with a missing script during installation on 11.1? I get /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.65271: line 2: /usr/lib/seamonkey/rebuild-databases.sh: No such file or directory And really, there is no such file in the RPMs. What is this database rebuild for, does one need it? Should I open a bug for that? [opensuse] Tweaking of e16 desktop nearing completion - way cool desktop

Listmates, As I have mentioned before, I have been working with both e16 and e17 desktops (both stable, excellent desktops that work well as a primary, but more importantly as a remote via vnc or nx). There are quite a few hidden features in e16 like the ability to add Init, Start and Stop directories of applications to run on X-init, enlightenment Start and Stop that you can use to autostart or autokill apps. There is plenty of keyboard and mouse binding flexibility and what seems like an endless number of good desktop themes. (2 favorites for e16: Ganymede & DarkOne) The initial setup does a good job of creating menus of all apps. It separates the apps into Gnome/KDE/Other main folders. The menu scheme is done in simple text files that makes customizing menus a simple matter. Just thought I would post a couple of screenshots of the tools available and of the desktop for any who may be interested. I have 2 desktops with my desktop "areas" laid out in a 4x1 grid. So the result of having two desktops makes 8 desktop areas (that you would normally just call desktops). I'm not completely done tweaking the internals, but the looks of the desktop and the tools I will use are pretty much done. Give it either e16 or e17 a try. Small install and easy setup. [opensuse] Show icons from all icon sets - handy little script (requires feh for graphical icon index)

Listmates, Here is a fun little script that actually serves a purpose. If you have ever needed to look an icon and compare what it looks like in say Tango, hicolor, Oxygen, and Crystalsvg, it can be a pain. I was configuring e16 today and setting up the E-Toolbox I wanted to look at my options for icons for gimp, oo-writer, etc. Not wanting to have to click back and forth, I thought about using find or something like it to generate a list and see if I could use feh to show the icons on the screen to make a selection. feh, did me one better. It has a --fullindex command line switch that will generate a 'collage' or graphical index of the image file names passed to it by referencing a file containing the list. Basically it just creates a background and puts the images (icons) in it side by side. Exactly what I wanted. So a wrote a short script to do it and simply called showicon. The only requirements are 'locate' and 'feh'. You can get locate from the 'findutils- locate' package and 'feh' from packman. The script checks for feh and will just produce the icon list if feh isn't installed. Nothing will happen if locate isn't installed. Use it if you can. I am still running 10.3 on my laptop--haven't had time to upgrade yet, and yes, I know it's now obsolete, dead, whatever. I would like to put OpenOffice 3.0 on, though, and was wondering if there's a respository other than those I find on the OpenSuse list where I could get OpenOffice 3.0 RPMs for 10.3. Thanks, -- Jim

[opensuse] Bug in xmms2 dependencies - packman (fyi)

Listmates, Attempting to install xmms2, the core part complains that it cannot be installed because there are no installable providers of libx264.so.60, and thus the package cannot be installed. The actual conflict file is: #### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2009-10-29 22:22:20 #### nothing provides libx264.so.60 needed by libavcodec51-0.4.9svn-20080906.pm.0.i586 [ ] do not install xmms2-core-0.4-1.pm.4.i586 #### YaST2 conflicts list END ### Checking the system with locate libx264.so.60 reveals: /usr/lib64/libx264.so.60 Is already installed? What gives? Something is wonky with dependencies lately because this isn't the only case where yast/zypper has complained about a dependency that is already installed. Now I know that packman packages are not the responsibility of opensuse, and I also know that the error references and i586 package of libavcodec51, but the point is that this seems strange and I need to know if this is normal or if there is a problem with dependencies that is larger than this one instance. So first, has anyone else experienced this behavior? And, second, even if you haven't, any idea why I get an i586 dependency error on an x86-64 box where the x86-64 shared object file is already installed? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [opensuse] Japanese input

Good morning from Japan I just bought me on e-bay a second-hand HP notebook to use as an experimental machine in my zillionth time to "get friendly with Linux". (all previous attempts have failed ...) I did download OpenSUSE 11, but this is the "English version". Yet, I MUST have Japanese language capability. That means, I must be able to display, read and write/edit Japanese texts. I am sure this question has been answered already somewhere, but I don't know where and in my attempts at installing OpenSUSE 10.3 and later 11 on my (very) old desktops I could not figure out, how that is done. If there are some instructions somewhere even a non-computer freak like myself can follow, I would appreciate being directed there.
