[opensuse] postfix memory usage in 32bit vs 64bit

Just an interesting observation - well, I think it is :-) I run a lot of postfix on both 32bit and 64bit hardware. For testing, I started installing opensuse 64bit version on a couple of new production servers. After a while, I noticed that memory usage had risen sharply - a postfix smtpd daemon would have a memory footprint of virt=27M, res=5M. With a couple of hundred smtpd daemons, that adds up, and I ended up having to add more swap space. These daemons are often just waiting for a timeout, they don't actually do a lot, so they're swapped out. Well, I've now reinstalled the same servers with 32bit openSUSE 11.0, and saw a significant reduction in memory usage. The only difference here is in software, the config is exactly the same. Listmates, I ran a comparison on an old file server just to check disk performance of the backup machine. I compared it to a new machine and the difference validates Mohr's law: [AMD K62-450 w/2 20G IBM Deskstar 7200 rpm drives] sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 72 MB in 2.00 seconds = 35.94 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 26 MB in 3.09 seconds = 8.41 MB/sec [AMD Phenom 9850 w/2 500G Seagates in RAID1] /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 3504 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1751.75 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 188 MB in 3.02 seconds = 62.33 MB/sec /dev/sdb: Timing cached reads: 3494 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1746.89 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 200 MB in 3.01 seconds = 66.53 MB/sec /dev/dm-0: Timing cached reads: 3432 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1716.32 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 194 MB in 3.02 seconds = 64.27 MB/sec The Software RAID penalty -- virtually non-existent as far as hdparm is concerned. [opensuse] Yast -> Network Device - Not Re-Starting eth0 after changes

Listmates, I ran into an annoying bug with Yast -> Network Device _not_ restarting eth0 after making changes to a network card. This was incredibly frustrating to have to run back across town to the office after the ssh connection went dead. Yast correctly created /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0, but then for some reason just did not restart the device. I get to the office and loopback is the only device shown with ifconfig. A simply ifup eth0 started the card just fine. This is a brand new install of 11.0. The card is activated on boot using traditional ifup and the card comes up fine. The install DVD media was verified and no errors occurred during the install. I have 4 other 11.0 installs and this is the only time I have seen this behavior. However, this is the only x86_64 fixed IP install I have that is working with traditional ifup. I have my x86_64 laptop, but that is using network manager. All 32-bit installs with fixed IP's work fine. Has anyone else experienced this "feature" with a fixed IP and x86_64? -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. [opensuse] TaskJuggler not working with opensuse 11??

i installed TaskJuggler from YaST and no error occurred. But the program doesnt seem to work. There is no menu appear on my GNOME (normally it would). If I try to run from terminal ./taskjuggler tes.tjp, it says Unexpected end of file found. Probably a missing '}'. Something wrong with TaskJuggler for opensuse packet?? In my opinion opensuse 11.0 KDE4 may have been the Public Release which went ahead with the most amounts of open bugs ever....anyway that according to me and what is important is what other feel I have not heard of how much people were affected in 10.3 by loading KDE4 straight from KDE - If you have done that how much Joy? or Headache? it was? To get a feeling for what a broad spectrum of other users would rather have... Should Novell.DE...... A. Release New Versions of Opensuse with Less Frequency and more stability OR B. Keep the same Time Line and expectations for a New Release as we have now

[opensuse] Can't configure usb network in YaST

I start YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings and see: USB DSL Device: Not configured RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller: DHCP I select the DSL Device and click edit. This takes me to the address tab where I see: Device Type: ARCnet (Is this right? But it can't be changed.) And Dynamic Address DHCP I click 'Next' and 'Finish' and YaST seemingly completes with no errors. However, 'network restart' results in this appearing in /var/log/messages: ifup: eth1 syslog-ng[1929]: new configuration initialized ifup: No configuration found for eth1 Going back to YaST->Network Devices->Network Settings the DSL Device is listed as Not configured. [opensuse] Problems with kernel upgrade 2.6.22.19-0.1 on SuSE 10.3

Anyone have problems with this kernel? After installing it, my machine wouldn't boot. I had to downgrade to an earlier kernel. I get messages like waiting for /dev/sda2 to appear (/dev/sda1 is /boot and /dev/sda2 is root) !boot/01-devfunctions.sh: line 68: multipath: command not found After it dumped me into a shell without root or /boot mounted, I did the "mount --bind" and chroot thing and built a new initrd with mkinitrd and it still didn't work.
