[opensuse] how to update alsa to 1.0.14rc2 on Suse 10.1 with checkinstall?

I hope someone can shed some light on this problem. I've been working on this for months and have tried the alsa users list. I would like to update alsa to try to get a micorophone to work with my laptop. I am using Suse 10 .1 with kernel 2.6.16.27-0.6-smp. The sound card on my laptop (a HP DV2035us) works but not the microphone. some specs on my soundcard: #lspci 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) #cat /proc/asound/dev0/codec#0 Codec: Generic 14f1 ID 5047 I have alsa-firmware-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-devel-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-docs-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-plugins-1.0.10-15 alsa-tools-gui-1.0.11-16 alsa-tools-1.0.13-0.pm.1 alsa-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsamixergui-0.9.0rc1-558 The following tar.bz2 packages are availbble from ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver * Driver 1.0.14rc2 * Library 1.0.14rc2 * Lib-plugins 1.0.14rc2 * Utilities 1.0.14rc2 * Tools 1.0.14rc1 * Firmware 1.0.14rc2 * OSS Compat. Library 1.0.12 But I want to maintain the integrity of the rpm database by creating rpms of those packages using checkinstall. I did the following: $> bunzip2 alsa-driver-1.0.14rc1.tar.bz2 $> tar -xvf alsa-driver-1.0.14rc2.tar $> ./configure --with-debug=full --with-cards=hda-intel $> make $> su -, then root passwd : $#>checkinstall I built rpm's of all the new (1.0.14rc2) packages I listed in the same way. Then installed the seven new rpm's rpm -Uvh alsa*.rpm found all the audio modules $#> lsmod |grep -i snd Removed all modules $#>rmmod snd_hda_intel $#>rmmod snd_hda_codec $#>rmmod snd_pcm $#>rmmod snd_timer $#>rmmod snd $#>rmmod soundcore $#>rmmod snd_page_alloc $#>modprobe snd-hda-intel $#>alsamixer The new driver worked better and with alsamixer I got many more channels than with the original 1.0.13-0. The problem came when I rebooted - the card failed to work. I ran alsaconf and that seemed to work, but the Yast sound configuration tool fails to configure the card properly. Should I keep both the alsa-1.0.13-0.pm.0 rpm when installing the alsa-driver-1.0.14rc2.rpm that I created? I tried removing the alsa-1.0.13-0.pm.0 rpm, but then alsamixer does not exist. Which - if any - of the old (1.0.13-0) packages should I keep and which of the new tar.bz2 (1.0.14rc2) should I install? Any help would be appreciated. [opensuse] Java applets in browser are not working !

Hey guys, I've a 32 bit Suse 10.2 system running. Unfortunately, Java applets aren't working in my browser (this concerns both Konqueror & Firefox). [opensuse] Switching keyboard layouts

Hi List, What I want is to be able to switch different keyboard layouts by shortcut keys. Currently I have three layouts(english, russian and armenian). The default, which I can see in Keyboard Shortcuts section in Control Center is Alt+Ctrl+k, but when I use it and it successfully switches to russian layout, then it doesn't work for russian-armenian switching. I guess that being russian it's not Alt+Ctrl+k anymore. So, I've added alternate shortcut, for russian Alt+Ctrl+k key sequence, but it doesn't seem to be a solution, because then how do I switch from armenian back to english. I've also played with the xkb Options(though not knowing what it is, but it doesn't seem to be what I'm looking for). Am I missing something? Running SuSE 10.0 yet. I used to have to select 'factory reset' from the menu and it would correct itself. In my case, I was able to setup 'profiles' on my monitor. I do believe the ViewSonic VP920b supports 'profiles'. If this is the case you might want to go that route. If not, the auto-adjust or reset should do the trick. [opensuse] LCD monitor graphics not aligned with screen

Installing OpenSuse 10.2 I did not see nothing on my screen, so I change connection from DVI to analog and saw the installation program. Completed the installation and notice the desktop image was moved towards the right. From the LCD menu I gave it the option: Digital, and was restored to its position. I have to do this everytime I log in. Is there any solution to this? [opensuse] LVM and fsck failure on boot

And things were going so well... I'm trying to create an LVM volume using YAST and recycling some of my older, smaller hard drives. These drives are in USB housings on /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. The LVM creation process goes fine, as far as I can tell: I partition both drives as LVM partitions, add them to the Volume Group, and set up the mount point in fstab. At this point, the volume shows up under df, is fully accessible, and I start loading it with files. Everything works fine. As long as I keep the computer on, I can read/write to the volume all day. But, if I reboot the computer, the boot process halts with an fsck error on the LVM, and I can't get fsck to run a check on it -- I keep getting "please run fsck manually" messages, but that's what I'm *trying* to do. In the end, the only way I can get through boot is to remove the LVM from fstab and reboot. After which, I haven't been able to figure out a way to re-mount the volume manually. So far, I've tried ext2, ext3, and reiser, all with the same results, so I don't think it's the file system. [opensuse] mounting anomaly

Hi All, For those of you who recall my router and 10.0 system being hacked into some time ago (root logins enabled via ssh; weak passwords all around,) which I repaired by installing 10.2 from scratch then emptying out what was '/' for 10.0... emptied as in erased, not formatted... well... I'm finally able to recover that disk space and put it back into service. One problem, though: it won't mount normally... keeps turning the mount point directory green in my shell. See http://www.cehartung.com/images/green-mnt-pt.png Then there's the output from reiserfsck... note "Directories 3"... when there's nothing (visible) there. reiserfsck --check started at Fri Feb 2 08:32:30 2007 ########### Replaying journal.. Reiserfs journal '/dev/hdb7' in blocks [18..8211]: 0 transactions replayed Checking internal tree..finished Comparing bitmaps..finished Checking Semantic tree: finished No corruptions found There are on the filesystem: Leaves 1 Internal nodes 0 *** Directories 3 *** (emphasis added) Other files 0 Data block pointers 0 (0 of them are zero) Safe links 0 ########### reiserfsck finished at Fri Feb 2 08:32:31 2007 ########### Here are the relevant lines from /etc/fstab: /dev/hdb10 /windows/G2 reiserfs user,acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/hdb7 /windows/G3 reiserfs user,acl,user_xattr 1 2 note: hdb7, 8, 9 and 10 are identical and were created at the same time. I do not have this trouble with 'G2' when I mount it. Ideas please? All responses gratefully appreciated.
