[opensuse] Fact or Fiction? Possible Novell Ban

This morning on Slashdot I read an article discussing the possibility of Novell being banned from distributing linux. Here is an excerpt: Reuters is reporting that Novell may be banned from selling Linux. In the wake of the (much maligned) Novell/Microsoft deal, the Free Software Foundation is reviewing Novell's right to sell the operating system at all. The foundation controls the rights to key parts of the operating system, and council for the organization said that 'the community wants to interfere any way it can' with the Novell business arrangement. No decision has yet been reached, but one should be made in the next two weeks." Is this a measured response, or an over-reaction to the Novell/Microsoft arrangement? [opensuse] upgrading between versions of openSuse

Hi All, I know many threads have talked about this before, but I was wondering if there was a definitive thread that is considered the ANSWER or best of breed for this topic. My questions and scenarios are this. #1. For example, if you install opensuse 10.0 and only use the Novell based openSuse repos then you can pretty easily upgrade to 10.1 or 10.x. However, lets say you use 10.0 and you install smart and some other common repos like jenglh. Now you are outside of the "known" packages. Are you now unable to do a regular update using the new openSuse DVD? #2. Is there a common way or is it even possible to upgrade between 10.x and lets say an 11.x ? Is this supported at all? I only heard horror stories from people going from 9.3 to 10.x As always, thanks for any help/opionion. [opensuse] Packaging applications for linux

Hi All, I have been looking around about packaging applications on linux. Opensuse uses rpm and many others use .deb. However, in all honestly, I think this is one area where linux is sorely lacking. The RPM specfile just seems atrocious to me, however, there does not seem to be a good alternative. I know there are a couple of projects out there that use distro agnostic install tools like auto package but those break the "dependency structure" of such things as the rpm database if you install something outside of it. What have some of you done in the past? I don't see a real good alternative here... [opensuse] standard for init scripts and usage

Hello All, I have noticed that openSuse seems to have a slightly different way of dealing with init scripts and services than Ubuntu or RHEL. Is there a standard for the way init scripts are supposed to be built? I like the idea of being able to write one script and have it work on all (or as many as possible) linux based systems. Also, on RHEL one can do the following command "service mysqld restart" and this is the equiv of doing a "/etc/init.d/mysqld restart" does anything similar exist in openSuse? Also, I noticed that Ubuntu has in its latest version moved away from the current init.d way of doing things. What is your opinion on that? Is it better/worse or just more of the same? I love linux but it seems this type of stuff should be pretty standard or compatible otherwise there might be some type of lock in if you get familiar with a distro? I personally would like to use the one that is most standards compliant, just for the sake of supposrting it. What do you guys think? As always, any help is greatly appreciated. [opensuse] FAT32 max size - 5 GB OK?

I am upgrading my workstation from SuSE 10.0 to 10.2, and while being at it I am considering changing the disk partitioning. It's a dual boot machine (Linux and WindowsXP) and I would like a rather large FAT32 for exchanging files between Linux and Windows. How large can a FAT32 partition be? Is 5 GB possible?
