[opensuse] xsane/kprinter question

Hello list user: I frequently use xsane's copy function to save the scanned document directly to pdf files. The printer command in xsane is set to 'kprinter'. This results in launching kprinter when the scan process is finished and I can set in the kprinter window where to print to. If I select here pdf document I can't change the paper size. It is set to A4 and can't be changed. I would like to print to letter paper, how can I set that? Thanks, IG VÁSÁROLJON ONLINE! [opensuse] Squid and Edirectory

Hello, In our company we use squid with ip access control. Because our company is enough big, we have difficulty in controlling the ip addresses. Because of this reason we think that we can do this with edirectory authentication. We used squid_ldap_auth module . it seems good but because our clients use novell client , they authenticate edirectory and when they wants to connect to internet they have to write their username and password again again if they close internet explorer. This seems very unnecessary. I think we need a helper script controlling whether user authenticated to edirectory or not. ( for example we can understand it from networkaddress field in edirectory). [opensuse] Umlaute and accents stopped working

I have english as primary keyboard layout and german and english as additional ones. Everything worked just fine until 2 days ago. I don't know what I did, but since then switching to german layout turns my umlaut keys into dead keys and in portuguese I don't have accents any more. The other keyboard specifics work (y-z exchange and position of non-alphanumeric characters). Any idea what I could try? And processes started from cron as root were actually started with *NO* effective UID, meaning that they ran with a real UID of root, but an effective UID of "NOLUID". So this would let them do *some* things as root, but kernel-related things would be denied because an effective UID hadn't been set. Hmm... looks like they do at least still use multiple UIDs - see man setreuid (section 2) for a synopsis. Ahh! Check out "man capabilities" (section 7) - which explains this in more detail! The listing verifies that the OUTPUT chain is updated and in fact the browser cannot access anything. So far, so good. At 11:15, the messages log shows that cron executed the OFF.sh shell as the crontab entries for root commanded but the iptables dump for the OUTPUT section are unchanged and there is no interruption in outbounf access. Why would this not work from cron but work manually. BTW, it makes no difference if the command is run from a script or directly from the cron line after the time. It gets logged as if it is executing but does not affect iptables but the exact same command cut-and-paste as a command works as expected. What dumb am I overlooking? As a test, I had it ECHO to a file in my user account and it did create the files so the root crontab file actually does something, it just doesn't affect iptables. [opensuse] VNC grey screen problem

I am trying to set up VNC on a new opensuse 10.2 installation. When I run vncviewer it connects to the vncserver but all I get is the Xll grey screen with the large X shaped cursor - No xdm login screen! After a timeout period the connection closes and the vncviewer exits. Symptoms are the same when I run vncviewer on a remote or on the local machine. What have I not done? Things I have done: 1. Enabled xinet, and through yast enabled vnc1 - vnc3 2. Through yast enabled xdmcp 3. Turned off firewalling Things I have noticed: 1. There is a duplicate entry in /etc/services for port 5900/tcp. 2. netstat -a shows that xinetd is listening on 5900 3. When I run vncviewer, ps ax on the server shows Xvnc is running I have VNC running OK on a laptop using SuSE 9.3 A difference on the 9.3 version is that the argument :42 appears in the xinetd entries for vnc1,2, and 3 Any ideas? [opensuse] Using Konsole Under Gnome (Transparency Issue)

Using the default terminal (gnome-terminal) under gnome (opensuse 10.3) I can get transparent backgrounds to work fine. If I run Konsole (KDE default terminal) it works fine, however, when I try and configure a profile to use a transparent backgroun it doesn't work. (In the properties panel for the app it "detects" and thinks the desktop doesn't support transparent backgrounds. I'm sure its looking for something KDE-ish in the environment, or something is hardcoded under the hood somewhere. Unfortunately I can't stand the way gnome-terminal manages tabs and I can't stand KDE -- so I'm trying for the best of both worlds. Has anyone tweaked or found a way to use transparent backgrouns with Konsole under Gnome???
