[opensuse] get info about memory and CPU

Hi all, I have access to a remote server via SSH. I would like to know if there is any possible way to find out the speed and type of CPU and available memory via command line. Is it possible? [opensuse] Evolution 2.12 "reply" locks up on opensuse 10.3

I notice that a lot of people have had good luck with Evolution on opensuse 10.3. I have not. I have been using evolution since the Ximian days and it seems to be increasingly unstable (for me). My biggest problem at the moment is that I can reply only once in each session. When replying the second time, Evo locks and grays out. It does not release if I wait it out. evolution –force-shutdown will usually allow me to restart evolution, but then I cannot reply even once. It treats a response to a calendar meeting request the same way. I can receive email and send new mails OK. Sometimes, it locks up the Gnome main menu bar, and once in a while, the whole Gnome Desktop. Usually the only way I can complete clear out the problem is to restart the X server. Sometimes I have to reboot. When I moved from 10.2 to 10.3, I backed up my /home directory, reformatted everything and installed from scratch, so I don't have any old libraries or corrupt binaries. I do have everything that was in my home directory, so I suppose I could have something corrupted in the those, but I would be surprised that it would have this behavior. [opensuse] Simulating slow file system

Hi, I was wondering whether there is any tool in linux that can be used to simulate a slow file system ? I would need this to test the application I am working on, since some customers are not using fast machines (some are even using Windows with encrypted file systems). I would add such a tool to the very nice set of tools on linux like valgrind, sysprof and memprof... While we are at it, any way to simulate a slow network ? I received a warning on the panel from Zypper that it was not able to function. (I didn't save the message). It did report that there was updates. [opensuse] 10.3 install trouble

I'm trying to install 10.3 on a 4-year old 32-bit machine. I don't do enough installs to remember all the gotchas, so it's always a fraught process if anything goes wrong :( I blew a 10.3 DVD, verified it and ran the installer. It all went happily and eventually started installing the packages so I went home and left it to it. This morning I came in to find Missing operating system on the screen. Which means it's messed up the MBR? I had a poke in the BIOS but don't see anything that looks odd. So I put the DVD back in and selected Repair Installed System Now it says: An error occurred during the installation What an incredibly irritating message! I know an error occurred, that's why I asked it to repair the system! I went to the opensuse site but haven't found any useful installation troubleshooting guides. Can anybody point me to one, please? Or any relevant threads on the list. Oh yes, the video. When it starts booting, and up until the point where you choose install or repair or rescue etc, the video is fine. After that point it switches into some mode that isn't handled properly with flickering characters etc. It's a rage 128 pro graphics card, nothing fancy and old enough that there shouldn't be any bugs left. So what's going on there? So I'm not impressed by the 10.3 installation process so far. [opensuse] audio trouble in Opensuse 10.3 ... after login

I'm a fairly new Linux user who is completely new to Opensuse. I have recently installed the Gnome desktop version of Opensuse 10.3 to an old Compaq Presario desktop computer that also can boot up in Windows 2000. When I login the desktop icon for the volume control has a red X. When I click on it I get the following error message: "This volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed or that you don't have a sound card configured." The YaST sound configuration window shows that the ESS1988 Allegro-1 was configured as sound card number 0. It also lists the driver as snd_maestro3. So that seems like the card is being found. Most bizarre to me is that in the login window when my cursor is in the empty field in which to type my user name, I can hit the backspace key and get a healthy beep out of the speakers as if the sound card is correctly configured and ready to work and somehow the login process disrupts that, because after logging in I can get no sound whatsoever out of the speakers. I'm looking for any suggestions and I'm willing to provide any information that would be helpful. Please remember that I am something of a beginner, so please try to keep that in mind when advising me. Thank you. Sorry, I've been struggling to find any information on this, mainly because it is difficult to find proper search terms. Say I've installed some software, like PostgreSQL, that adds a beautiful script to /etc/init.d/ that starts or stops the server. Now I want to start the server in, say runlevel 3, so I know I need to add links to /etc/init.d/rc3.d/ but I'm having trouble finding information on the proper way of doing this.
