Can somebody give me a hint? (or am i looking for something impossible Google didn't gave something usefull, neither browsing the mysql-lists-archives) I had today a mysql workshop, in which they instructed me that you can have all sorts of database users (which don't have to have a system account) Authentication is done by mysql, and passwords are stored locally. Isn't it posible to feed the authentication thrue PAM? An advantage could be, not having plain passwords in mysql-scripts. I know there is something called pam_mysql, but that does the opposite, storing all user info into a mysql-database, while i want the access of database/tables to be done through pam. 10.0 external monitor at different resolution

Hi, I want to be able to run (intermittantly) an external monitor at a much higher resolution than the display on my laptop. I know I could probably do this by having two different X config files and manually switch between them. Is there an easier way ? eg issue command at CLI, switch off laptop monitor (output is then automatically piped to external monitor : works fine but only at native (low) LCD resolution). On the Novell site there is mention on enabling output to another monitor (which I can already do) but not at a differing resolution. There is also a comment that this does not work in 10.0. Forgot to set the "don't be broken" flag in your Windows install, did you? :-) Given that dhcpd seems to think that the requesting computer is a different machine depending on OS, I'm not sure that a static config will help; the lease file lookup happens using the exact same piece of info that the static assignment lookup uses, and so you should end up with the same behavior post-static-entry. Which is why I dropped it, and just roll my own dhcpd.conf file now. It's easier to maintain 100+ static assignments, along with all kinds of wacky pxe/tftp/etc related config options, than it is to try to fix the problems that config tools were causing.

Hi, Well I use both of them. Suse at work and kubuntu (ubunto+kde) at home. Suse for the beginner Linux user is a simple SO because Suse has YAST. Any user can use YAST to configure/change a Suse machine. Until now I can't understand why the other dists don't use Yast now that is open source. But for a little more experienced user, debian/ubuntu/kubuntu or any dist debian based is easier to maintain. SuSE 10.1: gcc 4.1 does not have x86_64, how to switch to gcc 3.4 ????

I got the following info to a compile problem, and it seems if I can switch to gcc 3.4 it would be solved. How can I do that? useradd command

Apparently after using the useradd command the new user's password file is automatically locked. I did user the -p option with useradd to set the password but the user can not login until after I as root use the passwd command once to set it again. I am confused. Why have a -p option in the first place to useradd if I have to just set it again with passwd to get it working? What I am trying to accomplish is to have a shell script that uses the useradd command (I have that working now) such that after the shell script runs the user can login. After I prompt for a login name and password I just want the script to set everything up and allow the user to login. Don't ask why I am not using the GUI for this. Sorry for such a stupid question but I am missing something. Cheers, Bob

Activate wireless on cable disconnection..possible?

My machine is running on SUSE 10.1. Its a IBM Thinkpad R52 series.. My wireless card gets activated at boot time. Instead of doing activating it manually I want it to activate whenever I remove ethernet cable and deactivate when I plug in the cable. Now is it possible? [opensuse] Sound card install problem on Medion MD2030 laptop

I know that this one is a classical problem with PCs running Linux, but still I will try my change. I have started to use SuSE 10.1on my Medion MD2030 laptop. Everything seems to work fine, except for the sound card. Using alsaconf, it detects the SiS AC'97 sound controller, but still there is no sound. I am prety sure that the sound controller is correctly detected. Do you have any hints how to solve this problem? -- Bogdan
