SLED 10 Firewall Ports and Active Directory

SLED 10 List; I have several SLED 10 laptops configured for Active Directory authentication. I want to enable the firewall feature but don't know what services or ports should be enabled within the firewall? What SuSEfirewall2 services do I need enable to ensure Active Directory authentication. Also; are their any Exchange 2003 specific ports or related services I should enable? Jim Waters

Google Earth

Has anyone here managed to run the recently released Google Earth on SuSE? I've installed it on my SuSE 10.1 box but the display is a total mess. According the google download page it has been confirmed to run on SuSE 10.1 but I do wonder how. (I've posted a question on the Google Earth forum but the activity there seems to be very low.) [opensuse] Printer not working

I am trying to get a cannon LB1120 running on opensuse 10.1 86_64 with cups 1,13svn and can not get the printer to accept jobs, every thing looks fine but when trying to print I get a "cupsdAuthorize: No authentication" message in the error log. Cautionary Tales: lm_sensors for beginners

For the first time since starting to use Linux, I decided that I will go really high tech and start using lm_sensors on SUSE 10.1. I used the /usr/sbin/sensors- detect command and let it find them and then "do its thing" to create the lm_sensors configuration file. Because it was time for me to go biddie-byes I didn't reboot but shut the system down and went to bed. This morning I booted-up the system and suddenly I was hit by a very high pitched sound coming from the computer. Ear-splitting it was :-( and to me this is a no-no 'cause I suffer from tinnitus. Took a while to pinpoint the sound as coming from the rheostat on the (front) panel which controls the speed of the Gigabyte CPU heatsink fan. There was not a murmur when I booted into the "other" OS so it was something in SUSE. Finally[0] dawned on me that the only thing that changed between "no noise" and "hight-pitched noise" was the creation of the lm_sensors file in /etc/sysconfig. I renamed lm_sensors file, rebooted and the sound vanished. So, if you configure lm_sensors and suddenly find that there is a very high-pitched sound coming from the innards of your computer case then you now know what you can try and do to get rid of it. [0] I have another rheostat on another (front) panel which controls the speed of the PSU and case fans which occasionally makes a similar noise if the speed of the case fans drops too low, and just gently tapping the control knob gets rid of the noise. My initial reaction to the above was that it was this that was causing the high-pitched sound. Cheers. -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1

Mencoder Help Please #2 (2-pass encoding)

Hi, Having digged net for a second day I am still having trouble converting a bunch of DIVX, XViD and QuickTime *.mov files into H264 (with mencoder) with AAC audio. Anyone please could help? I am trying to use one-line script for one-pass encoding: mencoder -oac faac -ovc x264 $1 -o $1.mp4 However, it produces no sound and throws message: WARNING: OUTPUT FILE FORMAT IS _AVI_. See -of help. I have no clue reason about. mencoder -oac copy -ovc x264 $1 -o $1.mp4 generates valid video file but sound track is being directly copied and remain mp3 2-PASS ENCODING - SEGMENTATION FAULT Having run this commands, I've got segmentation fault problem mencoder -nosound -ovc x264 -x264encopts pass=1:8x8dct:i8x8 $1 -o $1.mp4 mencoder -oac copy -ovc x264 -x264encopts pass=2:bitrate=1200:8x8dct:i8x8 $1 -o $1.mp4 x264 [warning]: Error: 2pass curve failed to converge x264 [warning]: target: 1000.00 kbit/s, expected: 449.69 kbit/s, avg QP: 10.0008 x264 [warning]: try reducing target bitrate or reducing qp_min (currently 10) x264 [info]: using cpu capabilities MMX MMXEXT SSE 3DNow! Differences between rpm-based distros

I wanted to run Yahoo Messenger on Suse 10.1 but the Yahoo web site provides packages for other distros than Suse. I tried to install Yahoo Messenger anyway, and miracle, it worked. It brings to mind the question of what requirements a package must meet to be able to run on Suse. How can I tell a non-Suse package will be able to run on Suse (10.1) successfully? Rich
