How do you manage additional modules for your Perl installation?

Hello, I have several developer systems, where Perl is used heavily. The Perl modules that are delivered with SUSE or are available at the usual package repositories are not sufficient, more are needed. I would like to install additional packages that originate from CPAN and have the following features: -- to be able to query the system for installed packages and their version number. (This is not identical to query for a Perl module and its version number.) Something like rpm -q. -- to search for existing uninstalled packages. -- keep the Perl installations on all systems synchronized -- if possible, do not destroy the rpm -V verification for installed SUSE packages. Maybe there is a RPM repository of Perl packages that is as substantial as ActiveState's repository? The problem is that the amount of Perl RPM packages that I found out there is rather restricted, not even Email::* is there. (Functronics has a few, but that is still restricted.) As long as there is no such repository, I have the following two possibilities, AFAICS: -- Use CPAN.pm to install new packages and rsync to synchronize the changes to /usr/lib/perl5 at all systems. -- But what do I do about changes in /usr/bin? -- And, how do I query for installed packages and bundles? -- CPAN::WAIT is supposed to support searching -- does that work? -- Leave SUSE perl as it is and install a completely different Perl system (e.g., from ActiveState) in /opt or /usr/local. There I would have ppm, ActiveState's Perl Package Manager. Synchronization So, how do you handle Perl module updates? Do you just install it systemwide and don't care about knowing what is installed? Or is there any possibility that I missed? Though obviously, I can't tell whether its a problem with the Novell branch or the equivalent openoffice.org build. If I get time I could try installing that to check. At least that way we'll know whether its worth a proper bug report. However, I am still left with the problem of having a version of open office that is not integrated with my desktop. I'm not too fussed about not having the Novell extensions - though I kind of miss the chamelean logo. Any ideas what could be wrong? Regards, Bruce.

Packman / KMyMoney / h323 dependency problems - anyone else?

Hi, Without going in to excessive detail, my updater globe (repositories are limited to suse, suse updates, packman) currently has an orange exclamation mark, but shows two updates which won't install due to missing or broken dependencies. One is to KMyMoney, the other to h323-devel. I've got bored waiting for the updater to finish "Getting Update List" since I opened it (several minutes now on a 1.5Mbps ADSL line and Core 2 Duo 2GHz), so no more details for the moment - just wondered if anyone else had hit the same problem lately.

[opensuse] missing ksyms form my kernel

Hi, I downloaded and compiled a 2.6.16 vanilla kernel from kernel.org for my suse 10.1 box. Now I am trying to compile and install some drivers/modules for this kernel. Everything goes well and the drivers/modules get generated and produce some RPMS for me to install. The problem I run into is that when I try to install the RPM packages I get a missing rpm dependency. error: Failed dependencies: ksym(schedule) = 1000e51 is needed by There is a suse kernel-syms rpm which will probably solve this if I where using the suse kernel. But I am using a vanilla kernel from kernel.org. Any clues on how to generate a kernel and kernel-syms rpm on my suse box from a vanilla source kernel? I do not think is the same question. That question is about using the OpenSuSE in a presentation. Mine is to distribute OpenSuSE version of OpenOffice with the OpenSuSE logo in. That is, not touching the rpm pacakge, but distributing it in another linux distribution. If this is not possible, it means that each time you want to make a forked distro based on OpenSuSE, or a customized OpenSuSE, you should look for all the OpenSuSE logos and removed them. Yast on dedicated server is not proprerly displayed with gnome-terminal

Hello, on my dedicated server runs suse 10.0. When I log into the dedicated server with remote console and start yast it all works very good with the KDE-Konsole. But when I start yast in the gnome-terminal, there are just strange letters displayed, like ÄÄÄÖÄÜÜÖÖÄÄÄÜÄÄÄÜ or similar. Is it a setting of gnome-terminal which has to be changed? Greets Ruediger

xorg 7 and kde 3.4.5

On an OpenSUSE 10.1 system, I have installed the current KDE 3.5.4 from opensuse, as well as Xorg 6.9. I want to upgrade X to Xorg 7.1. However, smart wants to remove all kde 3.4.5, which seems to be a generally bad idea... I see that others have upgraded to Xorg 7.1, but I see no discussion of the KDE issue. Anyone else done this upgrade? -- Roger Oberholtzer

Font issue with Konqueror (SUSE 10)

Hello everyone, I'm using SUSE 10.0 with all updates (provided by SUSE). I'm having an issue with Konqueror (file browser). I have it configured with font size 9. I see this when I open it for the first time. The 2nd time (and every next time) I open konqueror the fonts are reduced one point as if they were of size 8. I see this behaviour with my account and other user accounts on my system. Is it a known issue? I tried google but couldn't find any reference for it. Thanks! Jorge

Video, keyboard and mouse dies requiring reboot

A month or so back during updates from SUSE I started having problems. I am wondering if any of you are configured like I am and might have observed this bug. I am running SUSE 10.1. I also run the NVIDIA 8774 driver. I DO NOT see problems when only one person is logged on. However, two people use this machine such that one is on F7 and the other person is on F8. So switches to the two different environments happen multiple times a day. After about 5-12 hours one of the users starts seeing white tiny dots at the very top edge of their desktop. Within a few minutes (and especially if an F-key switch takes place) the keyboard stops working and the mouse and the screen goes away. (I need to describe what the screen looks like when it goes away but I can't at the moment). I can login with ssh from another machine and everything looks ok, except that "top" reports that X is using 100% of the resources. I usually do a reboot at that point and then the machine works again, usually for several hours. I have a gut feeling that this started when Xorg-x11-server-6.9.0-50.24.rpm was delivered via the software updater mechanism. I notice that Xorg now has version 7.1 available but I would prefer to try that via a SUSE delivery than to do it myself. If I prove that it is the X server I wonder how I can get SUSE to release the newer one? Questions: Is anyone out there configured to have two or more desktop users? Has anyone seen this behavior? Should I write the Xorg people? I know that I need to dig deeper and get more facts but was hopeful that someone might have seen this and solved it. Cheers, Bob
