My /tmp directory is growing with various logs and contains many other files - Ordinarily I would have NO hesitation in periodically deleting the contents of most /tmp directories however as I relatively new to Linux I am concerned if this will cause problems. I ask the same question about the /var/tmp directory which grows and grows with significant impact to the amount of space its taking up. There are a massive number of sub directories below /var/tmp as well as an abundant number of files in that directory. Something wrong with the mail

Something is wrong with the mail in this mail list--I received just one solitary message about 45 minutes ago posted by Matthias Hopf and that's all there has been all day. No mail in this list nor in the OT list. I just looked at the archives and see that my post timed 06:44:44 25/10/06 (thanks John for your evaluation) got through and John Anderson responded to it (and someone else had a good laugh as well) but none of those messages have arrived here as yet. Those who are not having trouble getting mail from this list, would you please check if there is some sort of a problem with SUSE's server? Thanks. [opensuse] automatic printer configuration changes?

Hi, I've now seen it several times that for some reason SUSE automatically changes printer configuration. And most times to something that does not work. How is this possible? This seemed to happen yesterday to my HP Color Laserjet 1600. This printer seems to require using foo2zjs (http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/) instead of foo2hp recommended by linux- printing.org. I had that installed, but yesterday printer stopped printing -> it appears that now system was trying to use non-working foo2hp. Cron reports, even though I don't want them!

I'm a bit puzzled, I have this in my /etc/sysconfig/cron: SYSLOG_ON_NO_ERROR="no" SEND_MAIL_ON_NO_ERROR="no" My "problematic" script is updating my AV, the cron script is this: 49 */2 * * * root /opt/eset/nod32/sbin/nod32_update 2>&1 > /dev/null Still, I get a mail from each and every update, successful or not. If I run '/opt/eset/nod32/sbin/nod32_update 2>&1 > /dev/null' manually, I don't get any output whatsoever to the screen, so what's going on here? -- Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting

This symbol is very important to me, it means Chinese money, RMB or CNY. I use it everyday on OOCalc. How do I enter this symbol? The old way is to keep it in tomboy (a memo application) and copy & paste it to OOCalc when I need it. Windows (Chinese version) has a special feature to enter this symbol easily. Other symbols I don't know how to enter in Linux are: 1. 、 2. 《》 These symbols are very frequently used Chinese punctuations. They are all available in Windows as 'software keyboard' that when enabled, each key is replaced by a Chinese punctuation. Thanks to this interesting feature, currently no Chinese keyboard actually implement these punctuations as separate key. P.S. I tried to look for them in char-map but is not able to find them easily. The way I keep using is google-for-it-and-copy&paste. P.S. Use UTF-8 charset if you cannot see my example punctuations correctly. In DOS there was the ability to verify a singular files integrity by using chkdsk c:/file.dos......The result indicated if the file integrity was so. There was also the ability to set in the Autoexec.bat set verify=ON - which made sure that EVERY file that you copied you did not need to use the verify option C:\file.dos C:\temp\file.dos /v My questions are 1. Is there a global set verify=on in Linux? 2. Is there the ability to verify a single files integrity as above with a similar command such as chkdsk The reason I ask is that I recently lost my home directory and I had KDAR backing up the /home directory every week to an NFS drive. When I came to restore the archive the files header was reported to be corrupted. Also as a backup I copied with Konqueror the /home directory to an NFS drive and some of the files are aslo now not readable due corruption. I have made an Enhancement report to both Konqueror and KDAR that they include a verify option like most backup programs. Over many years I have seen backups unable to be restored because verify was not turned on. Now its happened to me.I understand the file system in Linux is far superior in its disk I/O but I dont want to waste time backing up if I cannot ensure the files are intact. Does anti-virus program clamAV need to run on all PC's in the network or just need to be loaded once on 1PC for each sub-net mask route. If others want to use the program you will need to install it via software management open port 3310 in advanced in the firewall. Run freshclam to receive new definition and execute clamd to run the program in a second terminal session. Also how do I get this application to auto-load at boot time.
