The disappearing desktop panels

Hi There, This is now the second time, something strange has happened in relation to desktop panels. Firstly, in Gnome, my panel at the top of the screen which shows open applications has disappeared. Secondly, in XFCE, both the top panel and the bottom XFCE desktop panel have both disappeared. It's not a auto-hide thing as I looked there first. Now the only DE I have left that works properly is KDE. Please help -- SynapseR Suse 9.3

AMD 64bit Suse 9.3 installation trouble

I have just been given a nice new system, but I am having trouble testing various distros on it. Can anyone help me with Suse 9.3? The installation for the distro halts completly just after the kernel loading message, and outputs a box to the screen : PSTK RSTK 0 0.0 1 0.0 2 0.0 0: ffffffff.5 3 C0000.1 1: 14ba.15 err 8 ip 1471: 10.7 Can anyone tell me what this message means? My system is a twin processor AMD Opteron 252 (2600Mhz), it has 2 GB Ram, SATA hard drives. The mother board is a Tyan K8W. The system was built by transtec, a great supporter of Suse. /boot/message wrong format?????

Hi! On my laptop (running 9.3, upgraded from 9.2), since the upgrade grup complains that /boot/message is the wrong format and is the normal ugly DOS-style grub menu. I have gone to /usr/share/gfxboot, re-created the message file (which is just a cpio file with jpegs and a binary in it), put it in /boot, re-installed grub (not nessessary, I just want to be sure), and it still doesn't work. I have another suse 9.3 box that does work, so I copied the message file over and it still didn't work. Would switching to lilo work? Can I make grub work? Thanks!

MegaRAID SCSI 320-1 problem

Anyone with a good idea about this problem? MegaRAID SCSI 320-1, BIOS: G119, F/W: 1L37. I put the controller into an ordinary MSI socket A motherbord with an AMD Athlon 2000+, 32-bit PCI. Config and init works fine, but when I boot SuSE SLES9 from installation CD, the controller reports h/w error and one command in queue when I look at the trace window (ALT+4). I also tried with acpi=off, same problem. Then I moved the controller to a Arima HDAMA board with 2 x Opteron 246 and 4GB memory. I tried 32-bit PCI, PCI-64 and PCI-X 100 and 133MHz. There I tried to boot both 64 and 32-bit SuSE SLES9, the SLES "Welcome screen" appears, but it never comes to the install/boot/rescue selection that is the first screen. I also tried SuSE 9.3 Pro in both 64/32-bit versions, with that I came to the selection screen, choose "Install" and the kernel loaded. After that the system stops with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. Same problem with acpi=off. Anders

evolution

Greetings, Weird things are happening this side with Evolution, I configured my smtp and pop3 with ip of our server. Receiving mail works just fine But when I try and send mail I get and error : Error while performing operation. Could not connect to 196.100.100.21: No route to host. So after testing and testing and checking the server. I decided to try kmail, and it works, which suggests that the server setup of the account is correct but the config of Evolution is wrong. But the funny thing is if I setup my old account in evolution it also works. and I used different smtp server (the one for the other account of course) Now even if Iset both acounts up as stand alone, the one works the other doesn't, and yet again they both work in kmail. News group availability

Does anyone know of a free news server where I can get the news group alt.os.linux.suse? I m moving and it is not available on my new ISP's news server. My present ISP requires you to be a user of their service to get to the news server. -- Russ

You can also look at www.linuxgazette.com , the online version of Linux Journal and see several articles regarding Linux install onto USB drives. There are also new versions of Knoppix that use USB Drives for whenever you want to save your /home directories and settings. The newer ones also take advantage of the multi-session capability of a USB cd burner and then you write it back onto the CD. FYI.
