umask a specific directory

Greetings, (Old question, I can't find the answer I am looking for or possibly don't understand.) I have a /u folder, 26 users execute a series of custom apps from here. The person who set this up before was lazy and set all user and group UIDs and GIDs to (wait for it :) )....... root!!!!! I need to fix this :/ On the /u folder - I created a group called ngolfnet and chgrp -R the whole folder. Then I set the permissions to 770 so that group members and owners have read write and execute permissions, and then set Setgid access on the folder. I could not see any other way :\, Let me explain - in /u/pro5 there are about 30 executables which the group members must have access to, furthur more there is a taos directory for the developers which also need rwx, and to make life more exiting there are executables in some of the users home folders that can't be moved to /usr/bin due to the fact that they are written with relative paths instead of absolute paths. Users often need access to execute from each other home folders. Now they (users) all read and write to these folders as well. The problem is that when the programs write files, the files are created with 755 permissions, and I need it to be 570 or 770. But I can't set the default umask for the whole system, that could be risky. So using the defualt bash profiles is out. How do I set the umask for the folder ? Or what could be suggested as a good, safe work around or proper solution! Trying to understand modules

Most of you know I have been using a Logitech 3000 Pro webcam with my Linux system for quite a while. Most of you also know with the 2.6 kernel the pwc module is now maintained at http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/ Probably the biggest change is there is no longer a separate pwcx module. The pwc.ko module is capable of the large picture by itself. Now the question: I've been happily running my cam for a few months, since I first set up my SuSE 9.2 system. My module is located at /lib/modules/2.6.8-24.14-default/kernel/drivers/usb/media/pwc.ko, where it has worked fine for months. To load the module I type modprobe pwc. Suddenly yesterday for no apparent reason this command gave me: FATAL: Module pwc not found. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? I looked all over Google for an explanation, and did not find one. How is it "not found" when it is sitting right there in the same place it has been all along? I recopied pwc.ko. No difference. I plugged and unplugged the cam in different ports, no difference. I booted the computer with the cam plugged in as well as plugging in the cam after booting, all to no avail. Finally I got the idea to do insmod pwc.ko and it loads, but the command only works when I am in the /lib/modules/2.6.8-24.14-default/kernel/drivers/usb/media/ directory. The cam works again. I rmmodded and insmodded a few times to be sure. My question is what caused this change? Why is it "found" with insmod but not modprobe? Why must I be in the directory for insmod to work? (Even in the directory, modprobe gives the "FATAL" message.) Thank you. Yet Another SuSE Watcher Question

Recently, I've started to see little popup windows with the title "Error - SuSE Watcher" and the message "Unable to check for updates". This didn't start until several months after I got the system (with SuSE 9.2 pre-installed). I haven't changed the system configuration recently either. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Hi, I have to support the home computers of some friends. All of them are newly converted :) to SuSE 9.2. All of them use DSL or cable Internet access. The problem is that from time to time their ISPs change the IPs of the modem, which prevents me to remotely administer the machines without asking some of the people there to check what is their current external IP by checking http://www.whatismyip.com/ or the config of the modem. Is there a script/package which can check the external IP on regular basis and send the changes to an email? Cheers Sunny

bash: /bin/rm: Argument list too long

I've noticed recently that rm has a limit on howmany files it can handle in a glob. Somewhere along the line some of my mailing list directories lost their expiration settings, and filled with 10s of thousands of messages. KMail was not completing the move to trash when given over an hour. I decided to delete the messages by hand, so I went into the ~/Mail directory and tried rm in the relevant subdirectories. That's when I saw "bash: /bin/rm: Argument list too long". I did for f in *; do rm $f; done, and that worked. I'm just curious. How many's too many? -- Regards, Steven

Which PDF viewer can take input from stdin?

how to set reply-to to hostname?

I have suse-9.2 system being used to educate people about email. We use kmail for this and they can only send email to the people on the suse machine. The machine has the name (let's say) mickei. No when I set the reply-to address in kmail to 'roes@mickei' this is altered by the post system to 'roes(a)domain.test' (where domain.test is an example, but it illustrates the fqdn of the machine). In the kmail's outbox the message header looks as: From: Nobody <roes@mickei> Reply-To: roes@mickei To: test@mickei That looks good to me. So I think it is actually postfix that alters the reply address from roes@mickei to roes(a)domain.test. Does anyone know a setting that tells postfix to leave the reply-to field alone, so in my case the reply-to remains set to roes@mickei? -- TIA Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

To All: I do not know how most of you feel, but, instead of worrying about SuSe desupporting any version of same, maybe it is time to "desupport" any new versions , to include 9.3, until they get ALL the bugs out and people have time TO MAKE FULL USE OF WHAT VERSION THEY HAVE!!!!! :-)

Torsmo and ACPI battery level indicator

Folks, I'm running SuSE 9.1 Professional and am using Torsmo as a system monitor. After setting it up and finding that the battery indicator wasn't working, I Googled torsmo and ACPI, found a solution that, well, hasn't worked. It involved entering the following string in torsmorc: ${color grey}Battery:${color grey}{$battery} The default is bat0, so I have no battery designated. I've fiddled with a range of bracketing options, thinking I may have the syntax wrong. Still she no wanna fly. When I use Torsmo's ACPI ac indicator, Torsmo correctly shows if the AC is on line or off line. But the battery level still fails to display. Any thoughts? Hi all. On a SuSE 9.0 system, kernel modules are not found after a kernel upgrade from k_athlon-2.4.21-286 to k_athlon-2.4.21-291. /var/log/messages shows that the wrong modules.dep is searched for: Jun 10 08:50:45 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.4.21-286-athlon/modules.dep (No such file or direc tory) Fortunately, switching back to k_athlon-2.4.21-286 was easy. Has anybody encountered the same problem? Or is it just me? Greetings Sven

how to install/update to java-1.5 in suse 9.3

Hello all: I am using Suse 9.3 installed with the default java-1.4 version. I would like to update java to 1.5. According to the infos I got by googling java 1.5 is available through YOU update. When I try to use YOU to install java 1.5 I can see java-1.5 patches only if the 'Show Patch Category' is set to 'All patches', however the patches are grayed out so I am not able to select them for installation. What should I do? I don't know if this does matter: I've installed Suse 9.3 from the CD set, not from the DVD as I have no DVD drive. Thanks, IG

Changing the label on a FAT partition?

This seems like a simple question, but I can't find a way to do it... How do I change the volume label on a FAT partition? Now that SuSE 9.3 mounts usb devices and the like on /media/VOLUME_LABEL, I want to change some of my devices to sensible names, but can't see how to do this without loading them in Windows, or re-formatting them. e2fs has the "e2label" program - is there an equivalent for Linux? - Korny -- Kornelis Sietsma e-mail: korny at my surname dot com

SuSE9.3, nis and /etc/nsswitch.conf

Hello all, SuSE9.3 with NIS client running, ypwhich, and domainname return correct information, nis entry is in /etc/nsswitch.conf file, /lib/libnss_nis.so.2 is there. but the computer doesn't recoganize the host which is in nis, but not in dns. any suggestions for what could be wrong? Has anyone tried the new ATi Linux driver, version 8.14.13?

I've had much success using the nVidia Linux driver because it just works. I've never had any luck using the old ATi linux drivers. Has anyone tested the newer driver? How was the install process? Painful or Painless? I'm debating on getting a new card, but am on the fence on whether to get an nVidia based card or an ATi based card. Any comments or insights would be greatly appreciated! Themes dont appear

Slow network with NFS and Samba

Hi all! Got the following problem. Have a home network, with 3 PC's running SuSE (2 times 9.3 and 1 9.1) and a hardware router linking it all together. One of the PC's is to be a server, serving files mainly. Everything installs just fine, I get access to the server and all (both with NFS and Samba). Downloads from the server down to the clients is as fast as it gets on 100Mb ethernet, but upload TO the server is extremely slow and results in a lot of errors on the server. ssh question

Hello all: The sshd_config file says (/etc/ssh/sshd_config) that: # To disable tunneled clear text passwords, change to no here! PasswordAuthentication no I have a question regarding this. Does this mean that if I enable password authentication (change it to yes) and login to a computer via ssh using login name and password combination, the login name and password are sent as clear text (and easily can be sniffed)? I always thought that everything sent through the ssh channel is encypted, even the password and login name. Was I wrong? Please explain it. Thanks, IG
