Samba Sharing Dies

On SuSE 9.3 when I go to browse a Windose box from Konq I often get the error "The process for the smb://w2k-guest protocol died unexpectedly.". If I choose to browse a high level directory with very few files and no more than 1 or 2 sub-directories, all goes well, but if I try to browse a directory with a large number of sub-directories (eg. C:\WINNT) the router lights flash madly for about 10-15 mins and then I get the above error. I have no problem seeing any of the shared directories on the Linux box from the W2K box. Anyone got any thoughts about how I might have misconfigured Samba? TIA Dave

ssh keygen

Greetings I seem to be missing a step. on the server I run ssh-keygen -t rsa or dsa I copy id_rsa.pub into authorised keys on my workstation. How do I play a playlist of VOBs off hard drive?

I have some VOBs on my hard drive that I want to play "back to back" as I pulled them from some of my DVDs. I know how to create and play a playlist of VOBs on Windows, but not on SuSE. I have 9.2 right now. -- Cheers, wmeler

[Back for report] *SOLVED* !!! (The whole thing was a ReiserFS issue) 1st step: Repairing the damaged partition I booted the DVD, and first try to repair the partition with the repair function from the installation program. The program found effectively that my /dev/sda2 ReiserFS partition was corrupted (did not have a chance to spot that the last time I used the install/repair function. See underneath why.) I click on "Repair", and in a fraction of a second, I briefly saw a small windows poping up. It ran so fast that I sounded suspect. I ran the detection again to discover that the partition was still corrupted. *WORST*, I could then no more boot from HD ! So the only thing left to do was to launch the rescue mode. From there, I ran reiserfsck --check /dev/sda2 and I was told to fix the partition with the --rebuild-tree option. So I did it: reiserfsck --rebuild-tree --logfile rebuild.log /dev/sda2 After a moment of PANIC when I saw the warning to perform a backup first (I have none and could not do one), but everything went fine. 2nd step: Repair the system (in case...) The Suse install/repair process ran flawlessly, no more corrupted FS. I replaced a few packages as suggested (xorg was not one of them). And reboot again, now from HD. ... a quick check: the "unavailable" files were not in place, but the directories were clean. (The retrieved files were in a newly created lost+found directory) So, step 3: re-install the xorg package again with yast. No problem this time, the package was installed properly. Step 4: Run Yast Online Update (YOU) At least to make sure the packages replaced during the system repair process are up-to-date. Step 5: Configure X11 and the keyboard with Yast > Sax2 Hey, I can now print the missing keys in the test key gadget ! AND *DONE* ! The keyboard configuration issue is closed now. Thanks to all ! Mouse problem in 9.3

This is getting annoying... Setup is SuSE 9.3, and I have a USB mouse. The mouse has been working perfectly... up until recently. Now when I start up SuSE, the mouse doesn't work. If I do an Alt-F2 and start up YaST, then go to Hardware, Mouse Model... and just start up the Mouse Model part of YaST, the mouse starts working again... I dont' save anything or change anything... I've checked my xorg.conf file and nothing has changed there since the initial install/setup... it looks like this: ------------------------------------- Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "ButtonNumber" "7" Option "Buttons" "5" Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" Option "Name" "Logitech USB Trackball" Option "Protocol" "imps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection ------------------------------------------ So... anyone have any suggestions why the mouse stoped being initialized on a boot? I'm perplexed over the output of who versus w. who displays 8 'users', two of which I know for sure are not logged on the box. root partition not umounting?

hi. i recently installed 9.3 pro (from the 5-cd set, not the dvd). all's well except the root partition, which is probably not umounting at shutdown time. the shutdown sequence says "umounting hdb6", but at the next boot it still does an XFS recovery on that partition. this was not the case in 9.2, where XFS recovery ran only when there was an unclean shutdown. just to check what was happening, i used the magic-sysrq combos to sync the disks, remount the partitions r/o, kill all tasks, and instant-reboot. upon the subsequent boot, there was no XFS recovery. i don't thnk it's an XFS driver issue, because the other XFS partitions don't have this problem. here's my partition structure: hdb1 /boot ext3 50 mb hdb5 swap 500 mb hdb6 / xfs 10 gb hdb7 /home xfs 105 gb only hdb6 has the problem, the others are fine. i applied almost all relevant patches through YOU, but the problem persists. ok - i didn't install the kernel patch because that broke the system once on 9.2, and i'm slightly phobic about it. if the kernel patch is a sure cure for this, i'll try it. but if it isn't, i'd rather try other options first. thanks in advance. - t. -- cogito, ergo es.

By accident I middle clicked on a web page in an area without any link and I ended up going to a page at another site. The site can vary but I don't understand why clicking on any area of a webpage that is not a link would take me any where. Ok, this is probably simple but... I'm trying to start vsftpd (or verify if it's started). According to YAST it is installed, but I don't have any reference to an ftp server in the YAST Network Services. So my stupid question is how do I start vstpd? thanks, Regis

dvd not detected

Hi All, I have a MSI VIA KM400A mother board with sata support. I have 2 ATA drives connected to IDE0, 2 cdrom drives connected to IDE1 and 1 SATA drive. I am using suse 9.1. The problem is my dvd writer does not get detected. The only way for me to get the dvd writer detected is to boot off the 9.1 dvd from the dvd writer -> boot from hard drive. in /proc/ide i see the links to the hard drives and cdrom drives but the link to the dvd writer is not there. But when i boot off the dvd it will be created. What creates the ide under proc? Upgrading MySQL to 4.1

I'm running a 9.2 box with mysql 4.0.21-4.4, people here need to use subqueries, i recommended using postgresql, because they'll probably need other features in the future, but they want to stay with mysql. I googled a lot looking for an 4.1 rpm for suse, just found the rpms of SuSE 9.3, tried to upgrade my installation with them, but there i enter and infinite list of dependencies (it starts with libmysqlclient.so.12 needed by perl-DBD-mysql). I could force the upgrade, but i don't want to break anything. Any suggestions to upgrade it?, (without exporting - installing mysql.com rpms - reimporting, i would like to use suse' rpms) CI.-

Default file/folder permissions under '/etc' = ?

Hi, I have a friend I pushed very hard to move to Linux and now made for himself (and also for me) an extremely unpleasant situation:( Before I would attempt to fix really _all_ the file/folder permissions he ruined in '/etc' on his SUSE 9.1, would like to ask your opinion please, what I could do. As I understood, he did somehow a recursive chown and changed ALL of the stuff in the above folder to have the owner root:root :((( I wouldn't like to "lose him" and let him return so easily to the dark side! So at first I let SuSEconfig fix the most important stuff on that comp. At second I have all of the official .html pages from the Novell's site concerning 9.1, where all of their .rpm packages are listed with files/folders AND access rights detailed. I filtered out from them all of the lines having '/etc' in their pathnames and having NO root:root as owner. That was a not so huge list and changed 'back' all of that stuff, causing the system working now without Mb-s of bloody error-logs. Is there please a more precise way to get rid of this access-right problem? Would e.g. changing the system's general security-level to a very high level then back help us/me? How do I set glib in PREFIX?

Hi gang, I tried to build the source rpm of dillo (Patrick's version also), but I keep getting this error: checking for glib-config... no checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.0... no *** The glib-config script installed by GLIB could not be found *** If GLIB was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GLIB_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to glib-config. I can't seem to figure out 'how' to do what it's wanting me to do. I'm using 9.3 and I know that glib is newer than 1.2.0. Thanks for any help, JB

Hi! I just upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2. I had 'show device icons' set for my desktop under 9.1, but now they are gone. When I login, kdesktop says that klauncher doesn't know that protocol. Under the kde service manager, devices is gone, too. Drives:/ is there, though. I know that kde 3.4 uses media:/, so how do I tell my desktop to use devices:/ or media:/? Thanks! -Steven

SuSE 9.1 Diagnostics Apps?

I'm suddenly having a weird issue with my SuSE 9.1 box. It is a 1.9GHz AMG processor, but it's acting like it's a 200MHz processor or something. Takes like 10 minutes to boot up and pulling up a webpage via localhost transfers at 30 bytes a second! I'm assuming this is probably a processor issue (it does the same thing booting into XP Home), but I need to track down exactly what's going on. Can anyone suggest a diagnostics program that will show me stats on things like how fast the processor is actually running? I've looked in YAST but don't really see anything that will do it. Thanks!
