A summary and some new issues ......... The point on limited video memory looks to be reason. The specs on this legacy Intel N440BX server board tells that the CL-GD5480 using 2MB SGRAM supports extended modes up to * 1600x1200 and 1280x1024 in 256 colors * 1152x864 in 64K colors up to 100Hz # hwinfo --framebuffer told that 1280x1024 (+1280), 8 bit was supported, however none 1152x864 resolution was listed!? I verified the display setting with YaST2: * resolution: 1280x1024 * color depth: 16 bit I also verified /var/log/Xorg.0.log: Cirrus (0): not using default mode 1280x960 (insufficient memory for mode) Cirrus (0): not using mode "1280x1024" (no mode of this name) virtual size is 1152x864 (pitch 1152) modelines "1152x864" .....(and for lower resolutions) Fine tuning X display size: With SaX2 I first tried to lower color depth to 8 bit for 1200x1024@75Hz resolution. But testing this combination, the test screen size was not possible to extend to fit the whole size of my monitor. Therefore I tried the unusual 15 bit color depth instead for 1280x1024, which also was available. This test screen size(as with the previous 1280x1024, 16 bit) was possible to extend to fit the monitor size. Indeed the screen size became a little too large, so that the white corners on the right side disappeard outside the monitor right edge. 1) Is it possible to fine tune the X display size in smaller increments than with the SaX2 GUI arrow tool? KDE login screen disappeared: After reboot with 1280x1025, 15 bit something had happened. Suse 9.3 booted only in verbose (no quiet) mode and the normal KDE login box or kdm had disappeared! Instead a simple (xdm or another wm?) grey background login screen with a Suse lizard logo and a consol screen down to the left was displayed. During login, the normal yellow-green Suse splash sreen was displayed, and some slowly the KDE desktop was displayed similary correct, however with a xconsol screen down to the left, which reported an IO error: dev fd0, sector 0. I verified the desktop was again converted to 1152x1024, 73 Hz Therefore I decided to set the display permanent to 1152x1024@75Hz, 16bit also with SaX2, to see if the KDE login run faster (Xorg.0.log). However, the normal KDE login screen or kdm doesn't appear again. Another drawback with the simpe grey login screen is that there is no system restart option. 2) What can have happened and how to possibly get back or repair to the KDE login box again? Maybe some setting has changed in a configuration file that should start up kdm? My 3) One of the reason that I preferably would use 1280x1024 resolution, was the still somewhat large and clumpsy desktop icons using 1152x864. The panel icons is easy to switch from Normal to Small. Can this be done correspondingly for the desktop icons? Thanks, Terje J. Hanssen

What is up with the insane tangle of symlinks that makes up jpackage??! I remember how easy it used to be just to change the link /usr/lib/java and everything would be good. I don't find any documentation on how to do this anymore. What is the "canonical" way to switch back and forth between 1.4 and 1.5 in SUSE 9.3? surely not by editing all the symlinks in /etc/alternatives, or by uninstalling and reinstalling one or the other every time you want to switch? -- ====================================================== Glenn Holmer (Linux registered user #16682) ====================================================== "Greater coherence cannot be achieved. Linksys WPM54G SuSE 9.2

Hi All, I have just bought a Linksys WPM54G for my existing SuSE 9.2 installation. When I installed the card and switched on the PC for the first time suseplugger recognised the card and asked if I would like to configure it, which of course I tried, but it wasn't in the list of available cards. So after many hours of searching Google and trying the options that I found, I finally sort of got it working. Here is what I did :- 1. Use Synaptic to get ndiswrapper-tools 2. Get the windows drivers, and copy the .sys and .inf to somewhere (say /home/<yourusername>/Linksys/) 3. Open terminal, and enter the following commands: 3a. cd Linksys 3b. sudo ndiswrapper -i <name>.inf (mine was rt2500.inf) 3c. cd /etc/ndiswrapper/ 3d. sudo modprobe ndiswrapper 3e. sudo echo ndiswrapper >> /etc/modules 3f. sudo iwlist wlan0 scan (look for your access point in the list) 3g. sudo iwconfig wlan0 channel <X> essid <ESSID> mode Managed (the X and ESSID should come from the iwlist) 3h. sudo ifup wlan0 The above was found on :- http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=5645 This seemed to work, sort of. When I rebooted, the card was not loaded automatically, so I used the following to enable the card :- ifconfig wlan0 up iwconfig wlan0 channel X essid X mode Managed dhcpcd wlan0& (This command gave me an error, sorry can't remember what it was, but it seems to work) My question is 2 fold. 1. Is there an easier way to do this as I have another couple of SuSE 9.2 boxes to install the wireless cards into. 2. How do I set it up so that I don't have to manually type the above 3 commands and that the wlan0 card is loaded at boot time. Thanks in advance for your help. /etc/inittab and run level
