[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? I don't remember seeing this problem on the list. KMail print on screen is clear and most letters are separated. When I print out a mail, some letters, particularly the "t", the "si" and the "sk" combinations are scrunched together with adjoining letters. I am printing to an HP 2200D laserjet. The typeface on screen (and on paper) is a sans-serif font. Even on screen, it is slightly scrunched in spots. "ri" and "ti" and "tt" and "th" are too close together. Suggestions? TNX--doug

Can't open Transcode tarball or it doesn't exist

Hi Folks, I have been trying to get a tarball of transcode to compile on my SUSE 9.2 system. Every pkg I have d/l'd from the sites listed on the Transcode Wiki page: http://www.transcoding.org/cgi-bin/transcode are unopenable. Every one, including the beta versions. Have I made one of those embarrassing newby errors? Konqi Filemgr says : "The file does not exist" even tho it lists it. Is there a location for a transcode I can open and compile? PeterB p.s. screen, mouse, kb lockup

While attempting to stop a video playing on Macro Media Flash Player 7, I managed to lock out everything. I could not move the mouse cursor, the arrow keys and the rest of the kb didn't work, ctl-alt-del did nothing. None of the function keys did anything. (The video was something downloaded from the 'net via Firefox.) I wound up pulling the big switch, as us hams like to say. Is there anything else I could have done? I'm trying to put Linux to practical use, and this is the first time I've seen 10.0 crash, so it's good, but not fool-proof. (If something can be broken, this fool will break it!)

External disk choice

I have a 4-year old DELL desktop with a heavy CRT monitor that I'm going to give away soon . I also have a 2 month old laptop. Both computers run Linux/SuSE. I would like to buy an external disk to save most of my s/w development now residing on my old desktop. But I would like to be able to use it also with my laptop. Both computers have some USB ports so I daresay an external USB disk would be fine .. I'd appreciate some suggestion about a USB reliable, large capacity but portable, external disk or any alternative solution. Thank you in advance. Maura

SCSI RAID recovery

I have a fileserver running SuSE 8.0 with 2 IDE Drives and a SCSI RAID (RAID5). The system boots up to one of the IDE drives, and the SCSI RAID drive runs as a mounted filesystem (/dev/md0). (all filesystems are REISERFS). Problem: The SCSI RAID drive has crashed (won't boot up), and I need to recover it (repair it, through some utility). Further: The software does not seem to want to mount the disks, even though the SCSI BIOS (Adaptec) recognizes the disks, and they are listed as OPTIMAL. I tried to repair the disk(s) (with reiserfsck), but it produced an error message: reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 2 reiserfs_open: bread failed reading block 16 reiserfs_open: neither new nor old reiserfs form found on /dev/md0 The literature suggested that this error message is hardware related (either a disk is physically damaged, or maybe the RAID isn't recognized), but again, the disks are recognized (and therefore, so is the SCSI Card). I tried to boot up with SuSE CD 1 in Recovery mode, but not sure what to do there (i.e., after the root prompt - just run reiserfsck?). Literature suggests there are plenty of tools to handle disk recovery, and especially RAID support, I can't find reference to them anywhere. The installation of the RAID was trivial (using the YAST2 partitioning GUI window on startup), and yet recovery seems to be a mystery. This can't be right. Does anyone know where there are "decent" and "usable" recovery tools? OR ... does anyone know what "specifically" to do in this case? Can I re-partition without formatting, and recover the existing data? Any help is appreciated - I'm sure I'm missing something "obvious", but can't find "obviously" what to do in the literature, docs, etc. Thank you. Linux Magazine (Linux Pro in the US) has a 4 page review of the 9.3 release in the June 2005 issue, pgs 44-47. "Novell's Suse Linux 9.3 is a feature-rich, and robust Linux distribution. At first glance, the new version does not seem much changed from 9.2, but a lot of work has gone on under the hood. The distribution is definitely good for new users. If you already have Suse Linux 9.x or a similarly recent system, the update is only worth the effort if you are unhappy with your current setup. help for sight impaired people

Some weeks ago I inquired here about assistance for those who have difficulty seeing, as I am one, at present. I am effectively blind in the left eye and have cataract in the right. Some of this may be ameliorated in the future, some will probably not be. Nothing came back at all. The font in K-Mail out-going is about 8 point on my 17" screen, as is the font on the message names for the incoming mail. I have not been able to change this, altho the actual incoming message font I was successful in changing. I do not have access to my Windows machine at present, due to mechanical failure, and this is the only way I have to communicate. Is there no way to make SuSE Linux friendly to optically-challenged users? Please, someone, reply. --doug

Hi List, I have belatedly made the change from lilo to grub carefully converting my lilo config to grub'ese. It seems to work as expected. However, I have a couple of questions which I cannot track down in any off-line source (man, info, howto's etc.) and I am not able to trawl google or list archive with a time-limited unmetered dial-up connection at present. 1. In lilo I always used the boot-floppy option so as not to upset WinME. How do I do something similar in grub? 2. When the bootloader menu appeared in lilo I could interactively overide the default runlevel (ie: boot to runlevel 3 not 5) when necessary. How is this achieved in the grub menu? I will accept a URL to the appropriate list archive entry or web page. What are people using for anti-virus software? I've got BitDefender running on my machine, but I'd like to find something zero-cost that has a nice GUI so that when I set up boxes for friends and family, they can use it. Regularly (and automatically) updated virus definitions are a must, here. Dave

I've installed icewm from yast but I cannot seem to access it. Does anyone know how to change the display from kde to icewm? There doesn't seem to be any options in the login screen or the yast sysconfig editor that lists it as a choice for selection. Thanks Eddie

While I realize VNC can be used on multiple os's, I saw a snip of an article that POed me. It claimed that you couldn't graphically remotely administer a Linux machine before VNC. I assume it was a newbie (as am I), but one who didn't know about X, or Webmin, and came from a PC Anywhere background. I have used VNC at my brothers, but haven't messed with x remotely; what are the benefits/limitations of either, relating to a Linux installation. Has anyone messed with X remotely going either way from a X.org machine to Xfree or vice versa. Trying to learn from others mistakes before I fiddle TIA Randal

9.3 install on Compaq 3017CL notebook hangs or fails to find hard drive

Have Compaq Presario 3017CL notebook with SuSE 9.2 installed and running fine. Trying to install/upgrade SuSE 9.3. When booting from the DVD and selecting "Installation", the system hangs while "Initializing". When booting from the DVD and selecting "Installation w/o ACPI" or "Installation - Safe mode" the installation ask for keyboard, etc. but then says it can find no hard drive. I did not experience a problem like this when installing SuSE 9.1 or SuSE 9.2 on this system. Any idea how to get past this? Boot parameters to try, etc.? Thanks R.Parr, RHCE Temporal Arts

Asterisk on Suse minimal installation based on Suse Rescue - what to add to be bootable on HD partition ?

Hi, I'm trying to go route some of Asterisk users already proposed for Asterisk minimal system. I've started from Suse Rescue system image - I've put it into HD partition. But since rescue is spawned from working system it has empty /boot directories and is not directly bootable if put on HD. I've tried to transfer or install kernel and grub to this partition, but no success (I first access to partition with chroot to make additions...). I get errors on kernel rpm -ivh installation (I guess there are no directories and dependencies found in chroot) and also get error on "grub-install /dev/hda7": Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device Is there anyone more experienced with some advice, howto or example what need to be added to partition to be bootable on HD ? I installed the MPlayer plugin so I could play WM in Firefox. However, when it starts, it seems to load ok, but stops and says "buffering 0%". Has anybody got this working in 9.2 ?

Can the 9.1 installer resize an NTFS partition?

I just attempted to install SuSE 9.1 on my new Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop. When I got to the point of trying to resize the Windows partition (NTFS), I was prevented from doing so because it was mounted. So I removed the mount point and tried again. This time the resize operation did nothing -- no response when I pressed Alt-S. So I tried using a custom partition, and I got a message to the effect that this type of Windows partition could not be resized. The odd thing here is that several people reported in an earlier thread on this subject that they succeeded in resizing the NTFS partition. So I'm wondering why I got a different result than they did. Fortunately I have a way around it by using Partition Manager, but it would be nice if I could use the provided SuSE tools without having to resort to that. Paul

After searching the archives going back six months I have not been able to find much using "wireless" as the search string. I am contemplating buying a wireless router and pcmcia adapter for my laptop and would like to have any recommendations as to what to buy. I currently use a Linksys router and have never had problems and may want to stay with the same brand but a change is not out of the question. There doesn't have to be 15-20 mail with 'test' or 'is the list down' There is an archive at lists.suse.com/archive. If there hasn't been a new entry there, odds are the list is down. There is a test list, which you can subscribe to at test-list-subscribe(a)suse.com - if you can't, odds are the list server is malfunctioning, or you will get an error message explaining what the problem is. There is an admin, who doesn't always monitor this list, but whom you can make aware of any problems at suse-linux-e-owner(a)suse.com, assuming it's a local suse-linux-e problem, or ml-admin(a)suse.com if it's a general list server problem.

Install from Boot Floppies

I'm trying to install 9.2 on an older machine that doesn't have a cdrom drive so I downloaded the floppy boot disks and module disks from the suse ftp site. In ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.2 I only see bootdisk1 bootdisk2 and bootdisk3 Every time I try to install I get to a certain point that asks me for bootdisk4. I've tried 1, 2, and 3 at this point and also the module disks to no avail. I googled and found absolutely nothing helpful. Has anyone seen this silliness?

After download RPM from www.bittorrent.com and installed via yast i try to launch the client GUI via /usr/bin/btdownloadgui.py Err msg: File "\usr\bin/btdownloadgui.py", line 30, in ? import gtk import error: No module named gtk I checked in yast2 and find gtk already installed. But I can't find it via whereis command. Anyone use BT in linux? pls give me a hand. Many thanks!

Hi, Can anybody tell me where KHTML is meant to be on 9.1 ? When I am browsing with Konqueror and click on an html file I get a message saying that Konqueror cannot start KHTML. A search of my hard drive just gives me a couple of folders of the same name. Anybody else have anythoing different? Regards, Colin

The SuSEPlugger and SuSEWatcher services can be easily deactivated in KDE sessions, but not in GNOME (SuSE 9.3). The new GNOME login automatically starts these services. What scripts should be edited to deactivate them?

tg3 Drivers for Broadcom Network Cards on Dell 2650 and 6650 Servers.

Hello all, Has anyone had any recent issues with the tg3 driver on the hardware of either of these servers (all running various revisions of the 2.4 kernel). specifically with auto negotiation and crashes caused by it. Or is the bcm5700 driver still the better option? Alternatively am I better off ripping out the cards and sticking in something that uses the e1000 driver. Thanks, Ben

Hello List; My SuSE 9.1 thinks it is on a 56K dial up modem. It is really hooked up to Warner Cable's Road Runner service. Any suggestion on the best way to get the correct setup? The current modem is a Toshiba PCX 1000 and there is a Linksys cable DSL router between the box and the modem. Not married to either piece of equipment and could change if necessary. SuSE x86_64 and java

Hi All, Just installed by boxed 9.2 on my AMD 64 platform and was surprised to notice java was not integrated with mozilla as is on the i386 install I have running on another of my platforms. Sure would like to see java working here but not sure what's up. Could anyone please lend a hand? Thanks in advance, Phil

Hi I installed SuSE 9.3 at work but im struggling to get the updates because of our proxy. My username is user(a)domain.com but in the yast proxy settings you cant input the "@" character so i cant input my username. I's there a file where i can change this or a way to bypass it? Thanx

I had a mechanical mouse with a ball and replaced it with a Logitech Value Optical Mouse on a SuSE 9.2 pro system. As expected, the mouse is not to use now. It is jumping around and open windows as it wishes. How can I fix that? bye Ronald

Kmail 'select To' frustration

Hiya gang, Using SuSE 9.3's Kmail, when I want to compose a new email, and click the 'select' button for the 'To' line, it brings up a list of addresses to pick from window. Most are the addresses I have in my addressbook because they're the ones I put there, but there are others that are there that I don't want in there, but I cannot for the life of me get rid of the darn things. They aren't in kabc, nor in my addressbook if I bring it up. Where are these things being stored? Why can't I right-click on them and delete them? Any clues to fix this little niggling problem greatly appreciated. PS Got my 67 year old mom using 9.3 now too, and she uses it 100% of the time, she doesn't boot into her windows partition ever anymore, but this Kmail thing is bothering her also, a lot more than it's bothering me, heh.

Is there really any huge reason to not have a 32-bit DVD and a 64-bit DVD like 99% of the other major distros? All it is, IMO is an inconvenience.

Thunderbird from Windows to Suse 9.3

Hello, I have dual boot for Windows XP and Suse 9.3. In Windows I did not have a smtp server setup to send out mail. I needed to bring the email I had stored in XP to Suse, as that is what I primarily use. I use Thunderbird in both XP and Suse. I accidently erased my account settings in XP. I set up the exact same account, and even copied the folders into that accounts folder. It did not bring up my mail. The folders and email are still on my XP partition. All I want is for the e-mail to be in Suse. In Thunderbird you cannot import from Thunderbird. Is there a way to bring a copy of the e-mail folders/files into Suse from the XP partition (which I can access through command line or konqueror). I don't need them in XP, and don't want to fiddle around in XP trying to restore it, just to forward it to myself. Thank you. - James W

Copy spool mail files?

Is there a way to copy email from one boot /var/spool/mail to a differnt boot /var/spool/mail? One is SuSE 9.3 and the other is 8.2. I only have 3 users set up so far. TIA Jim Flanagan linuxjim at jjfiii.com

Failure to see my Jaz drives

I am running 9.3, my first update since 8.0. Everything looks pretty good overall. I have a SCSI controller card with 2 external Jaz drives chained off of it. As far as I can tell the system knows about the controller card but never has recognized the disks. This was not a problem in 8.0 or earlier versions. I looked around and can find no tool to sniff out the drives. I used the repair system operation on the install disk to see what I could come up with but no go. At one point I (inadvertently) wound up in the curses based, yast package and had a chance to look at what modules it thought were installed and a SCSI entry was there. Any ideas as I how I should proceed? lsmod does show scsi_mod in the output if that helps. dmesg always used to show references to both drives (sda and sdb) but now the only entry is 'SCSI subsystem initialized'. The drives ARE working as the machine is dual boot and they are visible to XP. Thanks

genealogy program for SuSE

Hello everyone: I have a friend I'm trying to convert to Linux. One of his major hobbies/interests is genealogy and I think it would be great if I could show him a Linux-based program that would meet his needs. Now, I've tried Gramps but have had no end of problems trying to get the thing to work. There seems to be some major problems between SuSE / gramps and rather that spending forever and a day trying to make it work, is there another Linux-based genealogy program that will work under SuSE? 10 GIG partition not big enough to contain a minimal instalation

Subject says it all. I am trying to install SuSE 9.3 Pro. I tried to install 9.3 on a 4 GIG, then made room for 7 GIG and finally on a 10.6 partition and still get the above message. Something is wrong here. I have libranet 2.8.1 and can install a minimal system on a 400 MEG partition. Any suggestions, still want to try 9.3. You can download libranet 2.8.1 at libranet.com for free and it is a debian system, which uses apt-get, a better system than rpm. I know you can get apt-get for rpm, don't want to start a flame war. jozien
