Hello everyone: I have a friend I'm trying to convert to Linux. One of his major hobbies/interests is genealogy and I think it would be great if I could show him a Linux-based program that would meet his needs. Now, I've tried Gramps but have had no end of problems trying to get the thing to work. There seems to be some major problems between SuSE / gramps and rather that spending forever and a day trying to make it work, is there another Linux-based genealogy program that will work under SuSE? Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mike

When you're looking for software in linux, your first port of call should be http://freshmeat.net, not everything is listed there, but it's damn close If you use konqueror, you can use the URL shortcut fm: to search freshmeat, for example fm:genealogy You will find a number of hits for projects you can check out

Get it from the apt repository. A simple 'apt install gramps' will do the things for you. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

I installed GeneWeb for my wife to use on my system. She has 39,706 individuals in it now. http://cristal.inria.fr/~ddr/GeneWeb/en/index.html ps: still using ver 4.09, appears 4.10 available

I, also, had no luck with gramps. A large number of individuals takes forever to open on my ancient 733mh hardware. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery

Which version 1.x? The one released recently 2.x tackled this problem, by moving to a real database instead of storing data in xml/gedcom (either one) only. Export to xml/gedcom is still possible though. The drawback is that you need a recent gnome, for suse that means you need version 9.3 -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Looks like 1.07. Guess I will have to wait a bit. Have 9.3 and have installed at two friends, but have not shut my machine down to upgrade yet. Still on 9.0 and has been solid as a rock. 9.1 and 9.2 are on the shelf beside 9.3 <grin>. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery

You can try this program. Geneweb runs thru your browser

You need suse-9.3 and gramps is available there via the apt repository. -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

I'm running Gramps 1.0.11-1 (installed via the wonderful apt-get) on 9.2, and it seems to work very well. What difficulties were you having precisely? Last week I imported a friend's genealogy data, put together on Family Tree on Microsoft Windows. It imported flawlessly all the data, notes, etc on 563 people (and looks far nicer than Family Tree into the bargain!). I've used Genj (http://genj.sourceforge.net) now and again in the past, but I think Gramps is now better. I'm interested to hear about the new version 2 - I need to check that one out - thanks Richard! -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly www.kyfieithu.co.uk - Meddalwedd Rhydd yn Gymraeg www.cymrux.org.uk - Linux Cymraeg ar un CD!

This genealogy thing would be one of the things that could keep my dad from using SuSE. He uses Family Tree and has a lot of data in it so it is nice to know that the
