Samba printing problem

Hi, I've set up a workstation with SuSE9. The workstation has a HP 840C printer connected to it via USB. It works fine if I print form that workstation. I need to print from a Windows 98 machine as well. I set up the SAMBA server - configuration file below. I can see the printer share from the Windows machine, but the share claims that the printer is off-line, while it is not. What did I miss? Thanks Nico # smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. Booting Linux off USB Hard Drive

I have a Dell Windows XP laptop, and am trying to add SuSE 9.0 on an external USB hard drive. I have successfully installed SuSE on the external hard drive (/dev/sda). The problem I am having is that when I had the SuSE installer write a new MBR it seemingly did not work, because when I tried boot up again, I got a line at the top of the screen that said .GRUB. and then it just froze. It apparently did something to the MBR, because windows dose not boot ether. I have made a boot floppy for Windows, that will boot into my XP install. What I would like to do is to set up Grub, LILO, or the windows boot loader to load both windows and Linux. I have tried LILO a little bit also, but when I tried to write it out to the MBR the installer Segment Faulted, and I have not tried it again. At this point, I cannot boot into Linux, although I can write the MBR using the SuSE installer, and can copy files from my Linux install using Knoppix If I have omitted any important information, pleas let me know, and I will try to find it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. -- Jesse Shaver

Output to a projector

Hi all, I am really struggling to get the output to a projector working from my laptop. I have a dell inspiron 4100 (ATI Radeon Mobility) and Suse 8.0 Pro. Searching in the lists for this, could not get anything relevant, is there someone who can give me some tips? I have done a really fancy presentation with latex and prosper, and I'll like to do the presentation in linux ot be able to switch back and forward from my emacs/MATLAB :-) Thaks!! Sergio Dominguez

rsh-server-017-431.i586.rpm wanted

My SJDS/SLES8.1 has only the client part rsh-017-431.i586.rpm installed and available on the media. I also need the server part rsh-server-017-431.i586.rpm but haven't succeeded to find it yet. Other versions I have tried, newer and older, has neihter been able to install. Can someone help me with that package? Terje J. Hanssen

Hi I been trying to get an second ethernet card to work here and it seems it cant load the module for it i have one pci card that is working ok the second card i am trying to add is an ISA card it said 2100/1500 or it so i am thinking it is an NE type card i have change irq's and io to see if that would work but it doesnt unless i am doing the chainging of the io and irq wrong anyone have any idea why this card wont work if i do ifconfig eth1 up or modprobe ne i get it cant do it thanks for any ideas help and info Bob

I simply unpacked the 3 new kdelibs3 pkgs and tarred the 3 directories (etc, opt and usr) that the script made and then moved it to the root an untarred it. I let the files overwrite what's there. And I won't run apt for a while ..or at least until newer kdebase3 pkgs are uploaded. Then it will "install" all of it. dynamic DNS with SuSE 9.0

Folks, Is there a dynamic DNS package included with 9.0 or do I need to locate one off the web in which case any suggestions which one to use? If you use SecureID, no the Cisco client won't work because the Cisco client only works with three magic cards. Problem with YOU on Disconnected Machine

I'm working on a machine that is a standalone box running SuSE 9. I am attempting to build a patch CD on a networked machine by downloading the files from ftp.leo.org <ftp://ftp.leo.org> and duplicating the directory structure on the CD. Basically, I'm following a HOW-TO written by Togan Muftuoglu. My problem is that for the qt3, perl, python and kernel packages, I get a "Signature check failed" error. I tried a "rpm --checksig" on k_deflt.rpm as an example and it returned "./k_deflt.rpm: shal MD5 GPG NOT OK". Doing the same for kernel-source.rpm returned "error: ./kernel-source.rpm: headerRead failed". The really puzzling thing is that I did this on XFree86.rpm, which updated successfully, and it also returned "./XFree86.rpm: shal MD5 GPG NOT OK". Doing the same on the XFree86 patch file yielded a good GPG key while doing it on k_deflt-2.4.21-192.i586.rpm gave me the GPG NOT OK result also. What is going wrong here? How can I fix it? KDE 3.2 - again

I downloaded all files for KDE 3.2 from SuSE site. Whe I used Yast and add new local directory for installation. But when I run Install And Remove Sofware, nothing happened. Could I install rom files manually (rpm -Fhv)? Please help me. Mitja

apcupsd and hwscan: problem in 8.1

I am using SuSE 8.1, patched up until 2 weeks ago with YOU. When apcupsd is used with simple signalling with an APC BackUps, and the windows standard cable 940-0020B, it has to keep DTR in the serial port asserted low, because DTR high signals the UPS to switch off when it is on batteries. When the computer is booted, (via KT266 MSI board) the serial port is set with DTR low. When apcupsd is started by the init process it is held low. When hwscan is run by init, DTR (on this computer at least is set high. Therefore, the moment the UPS goes on battery in a power failure, the UPS switched off. This is a Bad Thing. Can anyone confirm this with another chipset, or otherwise elucidate? A workaround, of course, is to run apcupsd after hwscan, but I don't know what to edit to prevent YAST2 run level editor "correcting" this arrangement. Does it matter not running hwscan, another solution? -- Roger Hayter

Hi Folks... Finally pushed to the brink on my W2K work laptop, I've decided that I'm going to thumb my nose to corporate standards and migrate it to SuSe. The reason I haven't done so long ago is that it has to be seamless in terms of functionality. The two bigs: Office and VPN. I've noticed that people are reporting good success with Office2K under Wine. One down, one to go. I'm using the Nortel Extranet VPN client for remote connectivity from W2K. Can someone suggest a VPN client for SuSe that will provide the same functionality, transparent to the VPN gateway? Anyone tried this before? Thanx, Christopher Hollow

But both Kpilot and Jpilot cannot sync. I think there's a prob in permission. If I start Jpilot as root it's works fine! The /dev/ttyS0 file has write and read permission for user root and uucp group. User that should use Palm, is in uucp, so why he can't sync? Perhaps I should change permission for irattach? IOW, after I change the setting and run updatedb as root, I still get a listing of what's under /windows. This is the variable in /etc/sysconfig/locate: UPDATEDB_PRUNEPATHS="/mnt /cdrom /tmp /usr/tmp /var/tmp /var/spool /proc /media /windows" Am I wrong to think this will prevent /windows from being added to the database? Mounting LVM in Rescue System

I have a dual boot system, SUSE and eCOmstation. I deleted one HPFS partion in eCS which reordered the partion numbers, effecting by SUSE boot. The rescue system booted from the install DVD couldn't find the Root partition to mount since it is LVM (/dev/system/base). How do I use the resuce system boot to fix problems when the Root partition is LVM? Do I need to keep Root (/ mount) in ext3, and use LVM only for usr, var, tmp, opt, and so on? /boot is ext3, so do I need a setup where /etc is also in ext3 and not within LVM?

Apache Webserver fails to restart daily

All, I have recently upgraded a web server from SuSE 7.2 to SuSE 9.0. This went relatively painlessly, but there is now an issue with apache stopping every morning at 04:15 am. springnight:/etc/cron.daily # cat /var/log/httpd/error_log | grep SIGUSR1 [Tue Feb 17 04:15:32 2004] [notice] SIGUSR1 received. Folding at Home on many remote computers

For those who don't know what FAH is: http://folding.stanford.edu What happens if proteins don't fold correctly? Diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, BSE (Mad Cow disease), an inherited form of emphysema, and even many cancers are believed to result from protein misfolding. When proteins misfold, then can clump together ("aggregate"). These clumps can often gather in the brain, where it is believed to cause the symptoms of Mad Cow or Alzheimer's disease. So the thing is that you might have computers running Linux with processors that sit idle most of the time. As a matter of fact very few computers are actually more busy than idle, if we're considering processor time. You can donate the idle processor time to this scientific research. So you could ssh into those machines and run FAH there. But the problem with this method is that you need to keep an instance of bash on your computer, and one on the remote one, consuming RAM unnecessarily. Here is a method to run only FAH on a remote machine. It applies if you have shell there but not root. Consult with root person to see if it's allowed to run FAH. Note that FAH has the highest nice value of 19, which means lowest priority of all programs, so it shouldn't be noticed as slowing the computer down. It works by using ssh with key pairs. If you don't know how that can be done, here are the steps: 1. Generate your key pair: ssh-keygen -f myname -t dsa You will get two files: myname (private key) and myname.pub (public key) 2. Copy the public key (contents of myname.pub) to this file: remotemachine:/home/username/.ssh/authorized_keys 3. Copy the private key (contents of myname) to this file: localmachine:/home/username/.ssh/id_dsa You should be careful with this file, don't make it world readable. Treat it like the house or car keys, because that's what it is. Anyone who has a copy of it gains access to those machines that have your public key in the authorized_keys file. On the remote computer, create a directory /home/username/fah and download there http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/FAH4Console-Linux.exe and run it to configure it. After it started computing, you can interrupt it [Ctrl+C] and logout. Then you can issue this on your local machine: ssh remotemachine "cd fah && ./FAH4Console-Linux.exe" This connects to the remote computer, runs the commands between quotes and displays the output on the local console. If you press [Ctrl+C] now, FAH will continue running on the remote machine. Leave it running. It has a text log that you can read, if you need to. If you have a larger number of machines, here is a script to check on them from time to time to see if they're still running FAH: for SERVER in servername1 servername2 \ servername3 servername_aso whatserverhaveyou ; do echo -n Checking $SERVER: ssh $SERVER ps -A | grep FAH4 > /dev/null ; if [ ! $? ]; then echo FAH not running ; else echo -e "\t\tok" ; fi # above is one long line, it get wrapped by the mail client done In case you have root on the remote machines you could run FAH as a service. I'll make a script and post it when it's ready.

Very strange we looked at our logs prior to our reboot last night. Nothing. Now looking again there were errors in /var/log/warn. Our reiser file system must have replayed some stuck transactions? I need to configure that device to sync my Palm. SuSE recognize it, but won't configure it. I try to do "rcirda start" command without success. I've activated IRDA services with runlevel editor too. In the IR device there's a led that is always off. Here is my dmesg output about irda: "IrDA: Registered device irda0" With sysconfig, my irda device is configured as /dev/ttyS1.
