"Kernel: allocation failed" error

Dear list, the error, actually, is: kernel: __alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0xf0/0) I have lots of these errors and eventually my 7.3 system is unable to work. Some things are working but I'm unable to "shutdown -r" the system. The machine "partially" freezes. That is, I'm unable to shut it down with ctrl-alt-delete, too; alternate consoles are not working, but I can login with ssh. Really strange stuff. Eventually I had to press the reset button and, of course, I have to manually fsck all the disks. :-( At first I suspected cron, because the errors came at nigth, around 00:57-00:59, but today they started at 2:07:22 and ended at 2:18:32, with "gfp={0xf0,0x1f0,0x70}/0" randomly alternating. Only a few gfp=0x1d0/0 and gfp=0x20/0 are scattered in between. Lots of "last message repeated x times", too. Strangely I had: Feb 3 01:07:41 my_computer kdm[992]: Abnormal helper termination, code 1, signal 0 Feb 3 01:07:40 my_computer nscd: 903: cannot stat() file `/etc/passwd': Cannot allocate memory Feb 3 01:07:46 my_computer kdm[992]: fatal IO error 12 (Cannot allocate memory) Feb 3 01:07:51 my_computer kdm[962]: Cannot run config reader: pipe() failed mixed between the allocation failed errors, as if they were delayed.. ??? Other errors among them are: Feb 3 02:08:31 my_computer atalkd[991]: select: Cannot allocate memory Feb 3 01:16:54 my_computer nscd: 903: cannot stat() file `/etc/passwd': Cannot allocate memory Feb 3 02:17:04 my_computer sshd[1140]: error: select: Cannot allocate memory and a lot of: Feb 3 02:08:37 my_computer syslogd: select: Cannot allocate memory Now my problem is: how can I find who is calling __alloc_pages?? No clues in the var/log files. Looking at the errors above, I suspect kde, but why the almost 1 hour delay?? Ah! Yes, I ran memtest and I had no errors. Someone in this list is able to help me? Apache2 Directory Listing

Hi I'm very new to Linux. I'm running Apache2 on Suse Professional ver 9 as is from the box. This will be a development box, and I'd like to see directory listing for all directories rather than the 403 Error message. When I type in the location of a php test page it works perfectly. Gday. A couple of questions: 1. Can NPTL be used on an i586 (k6-2 3d) SuSE 9.0 machine, with kernel 2.6? 2. If yes, is building it from SRPM really the only way to get an i586 NPTL glibc? What will I need if have to do so. Once I get it done, will be happy to share my experience. Apt & KDE 3.1.5 question

Hi list, I'll apologise in advance if this has already been answered. I did check the archives first, but it does touch on issues raised recently. I want to install KDE 3.1.5 on my 8.2 pro box. Following lots of discussions from this list, I installed apt last night, ran a few apt-get -s install <package> runs to check the sources.list file and to "get the feel" of apt, then installed synaptic via apt - very cool. Hi all, I have, according to lspci, the following card: 00:0a.0 Serial controller: NetMos Technology 222N-2 I/O Card (2S+1P) (rev 01) (prog-if 02 [16550]) There are some patches agains kernel 2.4.21 mentioned on the kernel mailing list, but I'm not having luck patching these against the SUSE kernel. Apart from running vanilla kernel (which involves some more patching for filesystems and some other things), is there another way to get this going in SUSE? VNC & Suse 8.2 Success with init 5 but Grey window with init 3

Dear Friends, I have very good results when linux box suse 8.2 Pro is running in init 5 mode but i am getting a grey window when its in init 3 mode. The lsof command output shows that vnc server is running but kdm is not listening on port 177. My settings are as listed Below. Can somebody help me in this regard. I would like to access This Linux box irrespective of whether running in mode 5 or 3. Since this box is a database server local administrator often puts it into mode 3 when it slows down in mode 5 Best Regards R. S. Hi Rounded IDE cables are ones where all the 80 wires are arranged in a round bundle rather than flat like a ribbon. The idea being that the surface area of a rounded cable is much less than a flat ribbon cable thus increasing the air flow in your machine. Unfortunately, as I later found out, with all the wires being tightly bundled together there can be cross-talk between the individual wires so you can get signal errors with faster speed drives and ATA-66 or better controllers, thus producing drive access errors. With flat ribbon style IDE cables, each wire is directly next to two others at the most rather than 79 other wires with a rounded arrangement so you don't get the cross-talk between the wires. It is, however, possible to buy shielded rounded cables which don't suffer from this cross-talk. Hope this answers your question. Sean. > Hi, > please excuse my ignorance but what are rounded cables. Wireless setup on SuSE-9.0: terrible

Bascially, the level of ease in setting up wireless-DHCP on SuSE-9.0 is no match to that on Windows-XP. Has anyone succeeded in setting up wireless-DHCP on SuSE-9.0? I succeeded in setting up only once without paying attention to what I was doing. It was onto an WEP-disabled school access point in school in Cambridge, MA. However, after that success, I screwed up the setup while I was doing the same thing to the 128-bit WEP-enabled home wireless router. Since then, no luck even at school over SuSE-9.0 with WEP disabled. There are a bunch of setup files in several places: /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia /etc/pcmcia/config /etc/sysconfig/network/wireless /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-pcmcia /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wvlan-pcmcia /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp /etc/sysconfig/network/config Looking up /var/log/messages revealed that DHCP is not properly working although it works perfectly through wire on SuSE-9.0. In my case of the wireless failure, it really does not matter whether the wireless router is WEP enabled or disabled. My point is that there should be a tool that really imitates the setup tool in Windows XP, which is often called the Wireless Zero Configuration Service. Does anyone have a redhat experience? It drove me nuts and made me think of switching back to RedHat after four years. Thanks. Hugh

ppp connection weirdness

After being online for nearly three hours & while I was listening to an audio stream, I brought up kmail to check my e-mail. While it was downloading the process abruptly stopped. The modem was still connected but there was no throughput at all --not to the RealPlayer or the e-mail client. New Linuzx Pre Sale Question

I have a Compaq Presario 1675 with a Lucent soft winmodem. Mandrake and Redhat both have a difficult time recognizing this modem. I have searched and tried linmodems.org etc. but can't seem to find out if Suse Linux will auto recognize the modem and/or if and how much I will need to mess with the install. I'm fairly savvy at Windows but Linux is still new to me. Cheers and Thanks.

Auto Updating the Postfix 'proxy_interface'

This is my first post in the maillist (I hope I did it right - I'm sure someone will let me know if I didn't :) I'm so green to linux that just reading this may give you diarrhea. I just setup SuSE 9, postfix and qpoppoer - I must admit, SuSE did most of the work. If I can do it then there is hope for a free world. My only hiccup is my semi-static IP address to my NAT unit via DSL - it changes every few days. Is there a way for the server to update 'main.cf' file to the correct proxy interface and reload postfix when the WAN IP changes? I'm not even sure how to detect when my ISP expires my address. BTW: it took me quite some time to figure out that the proxy interface needs to be the WAN and not the LAN address. Thank you. Josh Joslyn

Cannot re-install from the CDs

When my installation straight off the SuSE Linux Pro CD 1 gets to the step "integrating the shared objects of the installation system", several errors come up on the screen about problems with various .so (shared object) files. I really want to re-install. Is my only option to wipe the hard drive? If so, how do I do that? Cheers, wmeler

As of now when I need to install Redhat ES I can preform an FTP Install and install without needing to swap any disks.. Does anyone know if SuSE Server supports FTP based install? Thanks :) --Charles

Replacing MS Exchange with a SuSE solution?

My boss wants us to setup an internal email, task, and calendaring solution for our company. We had previously used our ISP for email services. We are very close to going with Microsoft Exchange, but I would like to know what my options are on the Linux (and in particular, SuSE) side? Are there good open-source and/or commercial options that have great security and collaboration features? Someone at our company heard some guy talking about how he has an email, task, and calendaring solution running on Debian, but he didn't get details. I'm also curious .. how do these options compare to MS Exchange in terms of administration? We already paid for a copy of Exchange, but if anoter solution is easier to administer and more secure, we'll go with it. Thanks for the advice!

easy way to upgrade KDE?

Hi! I saw that KDE 3.2 RC1 is out. I also saw that rpm's are available for SuSE 8.2. Now is there a simple way to install this upgrade with some kind of point and click method? In fact when I see the listing of the ftp site, I don't really know what I already have installed on my system. I could go for a 'rpm -qa|grep -i kde' but still it wouldn't help me a lot since the list gets quite long. Should I go for writing a small script or is there a simpler method I am not aware of? I'm not sure which OpenOffice modifications you're referring to but excluding the commercial AGFA fonts, the free version of XD2 includes the OpenOffice Ximian Edition as well. All in all it's a good alternative to KDE if you're into desktop environments. It's still based on GNOME 2.2 though, I wonder when they'll release a new version.

GPL Issues

Hello Everyone. I'm going to embark on a project that will require me to butt heads with some high-level kahunas regarding Linux. I work for a very very big company that has enormous clout but is not as risk-taking as I would like them to be. Anyway my question is: If we decide to use a standard distribution of Linux, are we forced to publish our own source code if we statically or dynamically link to GPL libraries, use gcc to compile and use GPL header files? I'm getting different answers from different sources. We are not planning to change the kernel in any way. Maybe create our own drivers for proprietary hardware and install them at runtime. Can anyone shed a bit more light on this? TIA

Procmail + Maildir

Hi all, I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but I can't seem to get it right. I have this in my procmailrc :0 * ^Subject:.**SPAM** ! spambox(a)company.co.za Which works fine except that the mail loops once, so I get two of each in the spambox. I would rather like to do :0 * ^Subject:.**SPAM** /home/spambox/Maildir/ The mail gets delivered fine, except that it belongs to root instead of user spambox. How do I specify in procmail that this the ownership shouldn't change? All other users mail is fine, just this one account that gets delivered directly.
