how to get an alert when hard disk is nearly full?

Hello! A few days ago, I set up a Ksysguard applet in my (task)bar to know how much my hard disk is filled. There is also a possiblity to ask for an alert when it reaches a certain percentage. This alert, if I understand it well consists in the percentage changing of color. That's nearly what I wanted to have. In this case, I have to regularly have a look at this little figure to make sure I am not using too much disk space. Is there a possibility to get a small dialog box telling me that I've exceeded an certain level? Maybe even without that applet displayed? Thanks for you help! Patrick -- config: 8.2 / KDE 3.1

I was getting exactly these errors on my SUSE 7.3 box. I eventually traced the problem to dodgy IDE cabling. I was using rounded cables which worked OK with ATA-33 drives but when connected to a Promise Ultra 100 and some faster drives they intermittently caused exactly the errors you are getting. Replacing the IDE cables with some old fashioned ribbon style cables fixed the problem straight away and everything has been hunky-dory ever since. CDRTools compile errors on 9.0 SOLVED!

I installed 8.2 on another drive for grins-n-giggles to play around with the cdrtools errors I've been having troubles with. I copied the binaries froma virgin source build of cdrtools 2.01a25 on 8.2 to my 9.0 installation. Copied the /opt/schily/lib/* to /usr/lin on 9.0 install and now it allows me to build from vanilla sources. Seems something was wrong/misconfigured/dorked-up/whatever with the libraries included on 9.0 install. I run a SCSI burner and this is the FIRST time I've been able to burn since installing 9.0 pro. GIrlfriend's pc uses a APATI burner and it's working fine, but she cannot compile cdrtools-2.01a25 from vanilla sources. Hope this helps. xntp problem

Ok you unlucky ones, here it is: I live in Hawaii. I have spent a lot of time and effort setting my time to "gmt-10"= hawaii time. I realise that the work ethic around here does leave a lot of room to move around in, HOWEVER: as soon as I turned the xntpd daemon on, well, actually about 4-5 hours later, the kde displayed time jumped to California time, 2 hours ahead!!!! That would be too much for most but the real hard core "hawaii time die hards"!! I dutyfully right clicked on the time display, typed in my root pword and prepared myself to reset the time, ALAS, it WAS properly set in Yast!!!!!!! The kde display just added a couple of hours to confuse us haole insurgents!!!! Now the clincher: A "redo" resulted in a time display 3 hours behind the local time, that would be 5 hours behind California time and 3 hours behind "normal" time, ie summertime time diff from Ca (we do not the silly fall back / jump forward one hour bit in the fall and in the Spring)!!!!!!! I mean nothing against California, actually i wish them the best with their problems, BUT I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THEIR TIME AS MINE!!!!! Any ideas? tia, Dimitris

Path for Gimp2?

What is the path for Gimp2 when it is installed? I have the ULB version and have used it before, but all shortcuts point to the 1.2 version. Kmail Filters

Greets: Just downgraded from KDE3.2 to stock suse release for 9.0 (3.1.4) for a variety of reasons. Will be really nice when it down. Last issue to complete is importing Kmail filters from 3.2 to 3.1.4 Filters are located in /home/<user>/.kde3_backup/share/config/kmailrc But compying this file to its new location gives no immediate results. Filters are not imported into the current kmail (3.1.4) Any advise as to my errors? Best regards /ch

General question about RPM's

Hello: I noticed that suse 8.1 installs some RPMS for SASL V1 and SASL V2. Now I built and installed from source SASL2 without removing the RPM packages first. Is this a problem? I can imagine trying to remove the packages first would end up causing many dependency issues... So what is the correct way to handle this situation? I like installing stuff from source - as I get to determine how it's configured, but what to do on a system that has things installed via RPM? Note - my system seems to be working just fine after the source build and install of SASl without removing the SASL installed by suse installation.. did my source install just overwrite some files? -- Jim Norton - http://www.jimnorton.org 2 + 2 = 5 for large values of 2

Files in lost+found

I've been having problems with SuSE 8.2 auto rebooting for no apparent reason. At first I thought it was my hard drive since one time when I tried to fsck /dev/hda5 I got a kernel panic. After about 4 of these auto reboots and following "e2fsck -c -f /dev/hda5" I now have files in lost+found. Can these files be deleted? I had a backup of the root file system (/dev/hda5) and think everything is now correct. I've determined that most of the files/directories are from /etc/opt/... I'm not yet convinced the hard drive was the problem because I was getting system freezing while performing an fsck on /dev/hdb1 which is my backup. As a last resort I checked memory using the memtest on the SuSE DVD. It determine that my second 256Mb memory stick was bad. I removed it and am running on only 256Mb :( If the system is stable for the next 2 weeks I'll add more memory and call the system good. The following are my questions: 1) Can I safely delete the files in lost+found. 2) Is it possible for bad memory to cause problem with the file system on a hard drive (ext2)? 3) Should I still be concerned with a possible HD failure. The drive is an 80Gb Western Digital, about 8 months old. Sorry for the long post but I thought a little history might help. Modem detection and configuration

I have a modem I'm trying to configure on my father's newly SuSE-fied PC. It is (alledgedly) a real PCI modem, but doesn't show up in YaST's modem configuration. Is there any way to tell which port this modem is appearing as? What's the easiest way to test it? And how is it actually used? (I use a broadband connection, so I've never had to set up a modem before!) Can I convert a windows partition to linux?

Problems w/multiple partition restoring of my system from command line yast2

I tried to use "yast2" at the command line to restore the system. The only problem is that since I backed up using "multiple partition" (as described below), they're all in one directory on my hard drive ( /suse_backup ). And yast2 for multiple partitions seems to only allow you to restore them by specifying a "mountable" device. In my case, it lets me choose my CD-ROM, my CD-RW, and my floppy. Since each of the multiple partitions in my is supposed to be the size of a floppy, I tried to link the floppy and /suse_backup using "ln -s" and "ln -F", to no avail. The "ln" command kept complaining about them being on different devices (which makes sense). 1)Any suggestions as to how to get trick yast2 into letting me use the multiple partitions in the /suse_backup directory,such as by linking? (In other words, am I just doing the above trick I tried WRONG?) 2)My only other idea was to copy all the backup files (if I even can) to my Windoze box...and then burn each of the "multiple partition" files to a CD or two...and then use that/those CD(s) in my Linux box. This may be a waste of time though. Thoughts? 3)Or am I going about all of this wrong altogether? Suggestions (in yast or otherwise)? I also installed kdelibs3.rpm and a few other "base" KDE packages (and glib packages). I believe most if not all were for KDE3.1. Anyway, they were all straight from the SuSE 8.1 KDE pages. I figured this would cure the problem. No dice. In fact, after rebooting it seemed worse, because I wasn't seeing any of the SuSE stuff anymore (on my background, etc.) although that was to be expected. And konqueror still didn't work. So, I then re-updated back to the KDE3.0 versions straight off the CDs (including kdebase3-SuSE). Now, the problem has gotten even worse. I get a login prompt to my box, but I don't get the nice SuSE login from before and I never get into KDE at all. I have no idea what to post, but let me know and I'll do exactly as you ask (although it's going to be tough posting the exact messages as I am having to write you from a separate Windoze machine). kdelibs3-3.1.95-7

Hi all, Just thought I should mention something about the latest SuSE build of kdelibs3 on their mirrors. I ran into an odd problem last evening when trying to set/check some of the sounds in kcontrol center. Kcontrol would Sig 11 each time I tried to go into the system notifications module. Trying with root produced the same effect, plus I noticed that root items, file manager, etc were glittered with color blotches. Even after logging in as root in KDE the same problems existed. Thinking back to the last system files I had updated, kdelibs3 seemed to be the only thing changed. Dropping back to the -4 build cured the problems and restored all modules without any Sig 11. I haven't recompiled kdelibs3 yet for the -7 build, so don't know if there was a compile problem or problem with kdelibs3 itself. Maybe others have tested further and can comment. Don't know if any other modules in kcontrol were affected or not as some others I tried seem to work ok. Where is kmail?

I've attempted to update my kde to kde3.2, which went sadly wrong I think, at least I ended up with a system that I could hardly use. Anyway, I couldn't find the kdenetwork3-mail-3.1.95 rpm. Have I missed something? Anyway, I tried to reset my desktop (go back to the earlier version of KDE). That has not worked either and I now thinking of doing a complete reinstall, just to get a useable desktop. Can someone tell me how to tweak KDE3.2 in order to get it working, with icons, panel etc. or how to get my system back to KDE3.1 without a complete reinstall? I would be most grateful. Thanks Eddie

Yet, another wireless nic question...which one should I get?

My wife's been bugging me to "get the damn wires hidden!" I say, it's really hard to unless we go wireless. "Fine! Do it!", she says. He, he, he.....SCORE! So, since my plan has worked this far, I need to carry it to the end. I was down at Compusa today and was looking at the Linksys wpm54g wireless nic. I tried to look up some stuff on the card first and didn't find anything that was optomistic. Question: Is anyone using this card with 9.0? If not, what card are you using? My wife is running XP (work's laptop) so it will work with anything, but I'm going with the Linksys pcmcia card. Any thoughts? I'd like to stick with a G card if possible. Thanks, Tom

So well in fact, I haven't rebooted any of our servers for at least six months, and then it was only because I upgraded the hardware on one of the boxes. As for a good use for NIS, we use MS's Services For Unix to export our AD usernames to our linux servers running samba. As for Steve's question about what it is like on the other side of the fence, I don't feel he is really missing anything other then pretty screens and a fancy mail server (Exchange). Samba running on our linux servers is just as fast (if not faster) then the MS file servers. MySQL now has support for stored procedures and with their GUI Control Center, it is almost as easy to setup as MS SQL. I have to admit that I still love Exchange, but I am constantly looking for a open source replacement. One other thing that I haven't found on the linux front is any type of systems management (i.e MS Systems Management Server). We use it to keep track of everything from what programs users are running to making sure that the virus dats are updated on a regular basis. If anyone knows of something compairable, I would love to hear from them as MS SMS doesn't play well with non MS machines (go figure). :-) Ken

NIS, NIS+, Automount which combinations work

I've never found time to focus on this topic, but I believe it is very important. I discovered automount purely by accident. It wasn't until I removed NIS that I learned that automount required NIS. I seem to recall that it does (did) not work with NIS+, or something like that. I'm trying to get all this straight in my head. What are the various options available in SuSE 9.0 as regards NIS, NIS+, Automount, NFS, etc. I.e., what versions and variants are available, and how do they work together? What are the advantages and limitations of each? What kinds of security is available with each? Can the entire data transfer be encrypted? How. Can the authentication be encrypted or PKI based? I know I could probably formulate more coherent questions. I'm just trying to get some discussion going. I know LDAP, DNS, and DHCP can also play into this topic, as can IPv6. STH

Getting "Network Neighborhood" to work

Hey, I just installed 9.0 for the first time on one of my two home PCs. I clicked on the "Network" icon that the installer automatically placed on the Desktop and I got the message "smb:/ is not a valid file or folder". Yet, if I open up Konqueror and type: smb://my_other_home_pc_address I can access the Windows XP shared network folders on my other PC. What am I missing? Samba seems to have been installed properly. Do I need to do something with LiSA? Aren't they different things? Thanks in advance for your time. -GS
